what is an FPGA gaming console

Something realted to trans idk

An expensive emulator

It's an emulator box but it's 0.0001% more accurate with less features

Zoomers will do anything but learn to use a computer

Can it do N64 and Saturn too?

if I didnt already make pic related 2 years ago I'd be all over this

s o y boy gadget designed to drain your money

yes for awhile now. jaguar and 3do are in development too.

Its a hardware emulator instead of a software emulator. So it should emulate games more accurately.

I dot even care about that, what I love is zero stutter, audio artifacts, or screen tearing and it being able to somehow make my plasma run at the consoles native refresh rate

FPGA - Field Programmable Gate Array. a type of computer chip that can rearrange its own transistor logic, and in this context used to make complete logical copies of old console hardware. think of it like emulating on a hardware level.

typically they're used in an academic setting to learn how to program computer chips, but there's been a bunch of nerds bashing together retro game computers out of them with DIY parts and boards.

one such example is the MisTer FPGA project, pictured here. OP is all of this hardware in a tidier, more idiot proof package.

I'm content with software emulation, but I think these devices have a lot of potential with arcade emulation, especially for machines that run like shit in MAME such as Konami M2 (which unfortunately doesn't have a core yet in Mister).
I hope when there's another advancement with this technology that we see Sega Hikaru emulation, there aren't software emulation devs currently working on it and Demul is a piece of shit. Being able to fully play Planet Harriers alone would make me buy one of these devices.

It tries (and fails) to emulate console hardware.

Is it true this only supports SNAC for PSX? That's a shame if so, I love using original controllers on my MiSTer.

The only console worth buying this generation

this side faces enemy

wtf, total gamer death now

Look at what I made guys.

It's cool, but what the hell are you running that requires such a huge fan?

Jk a strong African American women made it.

A waste of money

Idk I took it from the poster above.

Hey my fellas. Check out what I created.

Compared to buying all the consoles and arcade/computer hardware it supports, it's a huge money saver.
Australian ingenuity at its finest.

Nintendo hire this man!

doesn't play discs

Isn't that supposed to be the point of these?

Emulation for autists who have money to burn

They were made for that in mind. That and ancient computers in which emulation was buggy/broken like the Atari ST

Oh my computer science where do I sign up???

There is an addon for the thing in OPs post that has a disc drive, but MiSTer doesn't natively support discs or cartridges. It just loads ROMs from a simple menu.

discount code: JOBST

Unitonically what is the purpose of this? You can play PS1 games on PS1 and PS2 and you trip over these fuckers in retro shops and thrift stores til this day. PS3 can play them, as well, as well, emulated granted, but few games have problems. I mean isn't this emulation too?

MiSTer doesn't natively support discs or cartridges

I love my Analogue Pocket for this very reason. If you can't use discs or cartridges then I don't particular see the point of the MiSTer. I get it emulates more accurately, but it's just not noticeable to me, and likely to 99% of people.

FPGA is a bit different than just a normal computer/device running an emulator. The original chips from the ps1 are documented by autists (sometimes with an electron microscope) and then the FPGA is programmed to behave exactly like those original chips.

You're Jobstn't

Anon, emulating the hardware makes it being literally 1:1 with an original console, if you didn't get that.

Why don't you just buy a minipc and then run it as an emulator exclusively if you want the novelty of having a console?

If you can't use discs or cartridges then I don't particular see the point of the MiSTer.

The point is playing the games, dumped ROMs are identical to the original MaskROMs or discs. You can play on a CRT with original controllers hooked up through a serial connection, just like the real thing. Even the Guncon works just fine.

An Amazon Fire Stick can literally play PS1 games and it can do a lot more than that for less than $50.

Using fpga give you the original hardware playback, 1:1 as if you were playing on the original console but it lets you use any controller and have native hdmi output with almost any resolution plus "overclock" of the old hardware if you wanted fix low fps

Setting up software emulation for 240p output is a complete nightmare. And it doesn't have SNAC or zero input lag or good N64/Saturn emulation.
