I think Anakin was the greatest Jedi in the entire history of the order. I buy into the idea that even though the order had grown complacent, Anakin's potential, both realized and unrealized, surpassed anyone before him. That's how Lucas views it, and the way Anakin is described in the EU and specifically in the novelization of episode 3 makes me believe it too.
