If you think the ending is just about grief and escapism, you didn’t understand the game. You have to choose whether to save Maelle and everyone on the canvas, condemning Alicia to eternal grief, or save Alicia and kill Maelle along with everyone in the canvas. It’s a moral choice. Alicia and Maelle are not the same person, the game makes that clear the entire time.

I was so confident siding with Verso on the fate of the canvas, but the actual consequences had me legitimately second guessing myself. This bit in particular was so tangible and human that I couldn't help but tear up.

He definitely is. I took it to mean that he's the only one Alicia isn't able to let go of. If the ending wasn't sad enough, that bit alone plants a seed in my mind that, if there was an epilogue to the epilogue, it could be that Alicia instantly goes to paint another canvas to lose herself in.

The fact that Maelle/Alicia tells Verso in Act 3 that she still prefers to be called Maelle shows that the Maelle side is still stronger than Alicia. Like it or not, Maelle would’ve chosen to save the people of Lumiere even without the memories of being a Paintress. Alicia wanted her brother back, Maelle wanted the people of Lumiere to live, which would also end up forcing Verso to stay alive, continuing to paint. The ending is a clash between Maelle and Alicia, not Verso.
That’s why Verso cried at the end. Alicia only appears when the screen turns black and white, that was the last time he saw his sister. From that point on, he would be a slave to Maelle, no longer Alicia’s brother.

That’s why the stronger personality, Maelle, took over and fought to save the canvas, while Verso fought for the weaker personality, because Alicia is the one he truly wants, the sister who actually cares about him, not Maelle.

I'm sorry anon I love E33 as much as you do but Bald Capybara 3 has mocap per each line said by the VA (the VA's had to do both the voicing and the mocap at the same time). E33 looks good in the 30fps story scenes, but the camp scenes are rather wooden and use stock animations.

If that were true, then she would just leave the canvas, paint another one, and let her beloved brother have the peace he wants. The Maelle side being alive, the side that doesn’t care much about Verso, is exactly why her ending exists.

BG3 uses a custom engine with no upscaling/TAA shenanigans, while E33 is UE5 which renders a lot of effects by dithering and then smearing the resulting checkerboard pattern
