Is Pokemon Scarlet and Violet any good? I haven't played a Pokemon games since Sun and Moon and I'm a little tempted to try the new ones since they're getting a performance boost on Switch 2.

I know everybody says Nintendo servers are gonna shit themselves on launch night but has that honestly ever happened since Fire Emblem Awakening? All the way back on the 3DS?
The Switch's eshop has been pretty robust when it comes to high demand and I've done digital for all its big releases since Smash Bros Ultimate.

It's not exactly the most sophisticated implementation of an attempt at an open world/heavily non-linear pokemon experience, there's a lot of compromising they had to do like almost non-existent interiors(stores and pokemon centers are now just glorified stands and menus) in towns.

But as far as the basic fundamental pokemon experience goes? It's a really good time and at least they've been consistent about the criticism towards Sun/Moon taking forever to get going. You're let loose to catch pokemon and get into fights really quickly and even the main bulk of the journey has a pretty short runup before you're allowed to just go do whatever you want.

Basically, its the best gen ever from a mechanics standpoint. Still grindy, but shiny pokemon are much easier to catch, its easier to get items/tms, and you can max out IVs of any pokemon at level 50. The one big issue is that the performance and graphics are dogshit and it was clearly rushed to market before it could be polished like PLA. The switch 2 update will likely make things much better, but there will probably still be a feeling that the game is unfinished even with all the mechanical improvements.

But as far as the basic fundamental pokemon experience goes? It's a really good time

my issue with the remaster is that I fear that while you can make the game run at higher framerates and bump the texture resolution, it doesn't change the fact that
1) the assets in this game are megafucked. they're full of repeating squares that indicate a rush job
2) SV has 3 main subplots, and one of them is excellent while the other two are meh. the endgame is pretty good, but it's all in all kind of a sour taste in the mouth
you can polish up the mess, but ultimately without a remake, the game is borked from a fundamental design perspective

The only upgrade packs out at launch (aside from the 11/12 free ones) are BotW and TotK. Mario Party isn't until late July, and Kirby isn't until August.

Legit my personal favorite pair of Pokémon games, and easy Top 3 Pokémon mainline game pair even with the poor graphics and performance on the Switch 1.

They're not the best Pokemon games ever, but for a first shot at open world they're not awful. They're the best games with the traditional battle system on the Switch, if nothing else, but they don't hold a candle to the GBA/DS games.

If you want to make a living regional dex or shiny hunt, it's kind of fun, though.

Free on gamepass. I played about 2 hours. It is alright, definitely better than average. I dig all the cultural bullshit in it. If you're a hardcore weeb you'll love it I'm sure. I've got catherine, fire emblem engage, 13 sentinels, fucking tears of the kingdom, and so on in my backlog. from my perspective, the switch 2 might not have a huge exclusive offering during the first month, but my switch library is big enough that I can be occupied for at least half a year, minimum.

Mario rpg fucking sucks. I always wanted to play that game as a kid, got the remake, it blows. I like the style of the super famicom game and I kept the music in the remake as the original soundtrack, it's great, but the actual story and turn based mechanics stink. I'll probably get it on snes someday but that remake really soured my opinion on the game.

Will the transfer transfer everything? I really don't want it to transfer all the demos I never played or the .8mb that demos leave when you delete them and have to manually delete which is tedious so I never do.

It technically might. Performance for it was quite solid except for one rest station that had excessive particle effects that caused frame drops. I could believe playing it on Switch 2 would fix that one hiccup. Still depends on how they're doing BC. If it's translated CPU/emulated GPU then CPU bottlenecks could be gone but GPU bottlenecks could still be around.

reminder do not buy a sd express card until you actually need one. Only lexar makes 1tb right now and other manufacturers will probably have more available in the coming months which will make things cheaper

If I had to guess it wasn't the game specifically, it wouldn't matter which superhero it was about, but rather the long-term economics of it. We know Disney's licensing demands are crazy high from the Sony leaks and at the same time EA is focusing on its successful live service titles. It could've been a probably fine 8/10 game but there probably wasn't any way to meaningful profitability.

On the subject I never quite understand the sentiment around new consoles having weak launches. Nowadays there's usually a lot to choose from. I get that the thing is that they're not exclusive, but isn't that better for everyone? The fact that Switch 2 is launching with cool shit like Kunitsu-Gami is awesome to me, I hope people use it as a reason to get that game.

Yeah, I had considered Wind Waker emulated but specifically saved it for when they would do an official release so I can play it portable (Don't own a Steam Deck but still might get one some day) so I get how it's specific to me. Still, I'm excited as hell.

I think it's because the last few console generations have lasted so long and the PS4 and PS5 had such anemic launch libraries that people just kinda assumed it was the default state of things, as well the 3DS and Wii U's weak launches still being in living memory, though the 3DS at least turned things around.
For what it's worth the Xbone actually had a pretty crazy launch lineup despite the memes.

Video game development/publishing has also slowed down at the highest levels so it's also been kinda rare to see an A-lister take the job of getting a new console off the ground, though Zelda did the job last time and now Mario's stepping up to the plate. Normally people see the big tentpoles and prestige projects further in in a console's lifespan, e.g. Gears or Halo for the 360, Xbone, XSX, or GTA6 literally coming in in the sixth fucking year of 9th gen consoles.

The launch lineup is nothing to write home about imo, but it still has a couple of games I'm interested in (Yakuza Zero, Shine Post, Kinutsugami) with several others that were announced in the months to come (Donkey Kong, Metroid Prime 4, Elden Ring, Zelda musou)
The console itself is more a follow-up on the OG Switch, and I expect it to have a gargantuan library of games once again.

Yeah I really hope Unity being on board for one of the Switch 2's launch titles means other licensed engines will do well.
