ITT: games with literally no reason to ever play them

I'll start with a simple example so people understand what I mean. Platformers as a whole, but especially the mario series, have evolved so much that the original super mario bros pales in comparison. Not a bad game but there is really no logical reason to ever play it over something like mario wonder for example.

It's better for speed running

you play it for the simplicity
he jump on goomba

Historical interest is a valid reason to play it as well as a bunch of other first games in a series

oh so true that's why you drive around in 1900s fords, right? hypocritical cuck.

It's fun so I'll play it, simple as

If I were into fords then yeah I probably wouldn't mind taking a spin in an old car if I could get my hands on one

The difference is I don't use super mario bros. 1 to get to my job

some people do

I have way more desire to replay Super Mario Bros than any rollslop game

I literally played SMB1 on my famicom two nights ago, Kill yourself OP

there is a collector car market because people want to drive old cars yes, you ignorant retard

It's still a masterpiece.
The fact that they could put little bits of this game into Odyssey speaks volumes of how well it holds up.

pppptpptptptptptptppt BANG BANG ptptptptptptptp aoooga

I disagree. What I enjoy about a lot of old games is that you often have only a few tools at your disposal, so they have to really get as much as they can out of those few tools. They're also fun to casually speedrun while I listen to stuff.

SMB 1 and Lost Levels control like ass and were immediately mogged by anything of note that came after.

Nah they're just moving that shit to the next classic car show

SMB is a great game and wonder is above average without being great.

Skill plays a huge role in SMB because of how precise the platforming is and how well the momentum and control actually works with that precision.

Wonder by comparison lacks any sort of need for precision, it's very basic and forgiving in all aspects so your core mechanics have basically been thrown out for the sake of accessibility when compared to the original SMB.

On its own tho it's still a fun enough game to mess around with.

Historical interest nothing, Super Mario Bros. holds up perfectly.

mechanically its solid, but i dont think theres enough variety in the level design.

Isn't it past your bed time?

genuinely embarrassing how much nintodlers will cope to defend their games. mario 1 is literally btfo every way from sunday by mario 3 and that's 2 fucking games later into the series. to pretend that it's still some awe inspiring gaming masterpiece to this day is ridiculous.

Any game is worth playing from an academic point of view. And SMB has different art assets and music, gamefeel, etc. than Mario Wonder. You could make this argument for modern games being interchangeable but games built on older, more specialized technology are all interesting to study

It's an arcade game, you play against time and try to rescue the princess.
Simple and keeps you entertained for a few minutes like most of the games.
There's really no reason to play any of the games, you could get a GF, make babies and family and grow old together like life is meant to be lived for human species to continue existing in the future.

I tried but women don't want to do any of that with me.

The way you approach different levels is where the variety came in, finding secrets and getting coins consistently while losing as few lives as possible was the true goal.

You also had warp pipes that gave you the freedom to change up your run however you wanted, essentially choosing the levels you wanted to play started here.

Keep in mind this was coming off the back of the arcade experience where you're forced to do things a certain way and they had an incentive to keep 1 ups from the player. This wasn't just the beginning of mario but the beginning of what truly set console games apart.

Is there a name for the phenomenon of attaching "logical reason" to things it has no place being attached to?

While I'm sure few do, I don't think most people would defend it as the best game, but one that is still a worthwhile game to play (or study if you're some dev nerd). I think it did help put console gaming back on the map after the game crash in the early 80s. I just thought it was fine for what it is. I played it, beat it, then moved on. A fun little novelty for the time. At the end of the day I prefer 2 (I only played All Stars version), 3 (nes) and World, just because of the controls and graphics are so much better, it was an obvious huge leap which helped propel Nintendo.

It's called autism.

wtf do you mean no place? our lives are not infinite. when thinking about what you want to do you need to be aware of whether or not your limited time is being spent effectively. why would you ever spend that time playing a game that is inferior to something else you could have played instead?

Oh, I see it now.

I have never seen this much seethe over the original super mario brothers.

Man i would have SO many old cars if i had the money.

carfu.jpg - 2048x1536, 754.01K

i have beaten mario 1 dozens of times and i will keep coming back to it every so often for as long as i play games
mario wonder i 100%ed once and immediately sold it
i enjoyed it but i cant see myself ever wanting to replay it when there are so many other great games to play

i enjoyed it but i cant see myself ever wanting to replay it when there are so many other great games to play

yeah that's exactly what i'm saying about super mario bros but no one gets it

its unironically too hard for zoomers

Child, people are interested in different things, they know what they want.
And those who don't, they (NPCs) let their autopilot to choose what to do next.
Some dedicate their life to Andy's logs, posting about it for years 24/7 on Anon Babble.

are there any games you replay?

I remember stomping turts as a boy

I hate time optimization niggers

I just think games are more fun than reality.

what are you supposed to do while your wife/gf is looking at bullshit on her phone though

yeah i've played mario wonder 3 times

Try talking to her, chud.

uhm yeah ok

Get better female or play and educate your child so they don't become like her.

"The Mystery of Atlantis" was made immediately in response to Super Mario Bros. to achieve that very mogging.

If any game is going to confirm your statement, it would be that one.

cars were the boomer's complete nes cart collection game room

damn i really cant see how you felt like doing that especially if 100%
its so easy and only really works because its fresh
a good chunk of the game is just spent getting free shit for doing nothing but visiting houses and theres pointless filler dialogue

honestly bros, when I first played nes it was at my friends house and I fucking loved going to house and playing SMB. but when I got my own that christmas I got Ninja Gaiden, Marble Madness, Ninja Turtles, and Bayou Billy. I played my copy of SMB for maybe 1 hour tops and never touched it again. and it was like that with every nintendo console I owned. I always saw Mario as cheap packin shit.

logical reason

Define that and tell me if there is a logical reason to play videogames

Guess OP realized he wasn't one of us after all.

You sound like how I used to talk when I was 16

when I was 16

How long ago was that and what do you wear when playing videogames?

smb 1 has 2 things going for it. the strong focus on momentum and it's classic arcade gameover based structure. there are vanishingly few modern platformers that do both of those things.

They're the best of the series for those reasons. SMB3 was a huge downgrade.

I used to ignore NES games because they seemed ugly and unpolished, but I've come to appreciate them. SNES games have much higher production value but sometimes became so casualized that they lose all the meaning in their gameplay. DQ3 for example has a threatening and oppressive feeling in its dungeons that SNES JRPGs never do, due to the limited inventory and options you have. Sometimes it feels like the NES entries thought their game design decisions out a lot more, while sequels were imitating.

Most recent one I can think of is tropical freeze, from 2014.
The autoscroller levels suck but no, lmao. 3 is a big mechanical improvement over 1. The controls are hugely improved, there's great level design, hammer bros aren't cancer, and the new powerups are great.

I own a Switch with Odyssey, and if I have to choose between playing SMB1 or Odyssey right now, I'll choose SMB1

The controls are hugely improved

I wouldn't call them improved but different
Basically the biggest difference is that in SMB3 you can be running to the right at full speed and jump, then completely change direction mid-air, which is practically impossible in SMB1

Mario Bros 1

Hold the run button and then jump your way to the flag pole

Sonic 1

the fastest thing alive

Hundreds of traps that exist solely to catch you offguard which makes going fast unviable

Marble Zone

super mario brothers gets a lot of things right that tons of subsequent and even contemporary games fail or even actively ignore. its not just history, its game design 101.

That game never got a sequel so the number 1 there makes no sense, smartass

There's no reason to play any of the other games with all their tacked-on junk when you already have the pure ludokino SMB1.

Applying logic to leisure.

Are you 80IQ or less? Wasting time on fun is illogical by it's very nature.

Yeah Sonic's shtick about going fast is usually bullshit, Mario 1 does speed and forward movement better than nearly any game ever made. The speedruns for SMB1 are hilarious, I don't think left is an input used even longer than a cumulative second in the game.

no reason to not check out the game that single handedly saved the whole gaming industry

Ok Zoomie

they could just use save states and not tell anyone.

based. Gamers are definitely not playing platformers in 2025.

Now say it without using save state rewinds.
