I used to enjoy exhibiting with my company. During the breaks I'd go for a walk around but never cared to interact with anything. Now all the cons keep going up in price for exhibitors while the floor managers get worse at their job and the crowds become smaller or less valuable

Never been to a vidya convention. Been to some "comic" conventions and horror conventions. I go to a local horror convention that's pretty big every year. Used to be better when it was smaller, but not too small. Now it's very crowded and the guests are typically overwhelmed with people. I miss the days when I could just waltz up to somebody like Jeffery Combs and have a ten minute conversation because nobody else was wanting to meet him.

Wait, I forgot, I have gone to a vidya convention, but it was specifically arcade/pinball. That was pretty cool. There was also a room with some uncommon home systems like the Vectrex (which I have since gotten for myself) and some Japanese home computers. I need to go to that convention again, it was great for playing lots of pinball tables.

I was part of the Artist Alley as an artist vendor in a couple of them.
It was fun to sell art and stuff, but holy shit the smell. The smell most of the customers had was utterly horrific.

i worked the floor at multiple E3s. it ranged from chill to badass and would recommend. however, some of the drones that companies bring to work the show are complete douchebags. don't interact with them, only the hired models. most of the girls are chill and friendly, will talk to you and smile for pics, even though it's only because they're paid to. i miss it.

i also worked at one AX, same place as E3. it was my only anime convention. i thought it was a shitshow - very few real attractions, mostly just vendors selling crap at inflated prices, bunch of scams, the artists in the alley aren't friendly, cosplayers are stuck up, and old hags lusting after young men. but i talked to other people about it, and apparently this is the norm for anime shows.

i attended a scavenger hunt side event for PAX but that was only because i was in seattle visiting family and they happened to be doing that at the time. the scavenger hunt was fun enough, just walk around downtown visiting malls and cat cafes and shit. can't say what it was like inside the show since the badges were sold out but there were niggers outside with dozens of scalped or fake ones they were trying to sell, and i wasn't going to give them any money.

AX was fun enough, but I never really had a desire to go again. I don't care that much about panels and cosplay.
Gen Con is great though. Tabletop gaming is inherently social, so it's fun having a weekend with 70,000 people that all just want to play board games and RPGs together.

I started going to anime cons literally the second year they started appearing on the east coast.

I honest couldn't find a strict vidya con. The closest was Megacon in Orlando that has anime/sci-fi/comics/gaming.

Back in 2008, I went to Megacon after I had just lost my job, my career I went to college for was dead, my girlfriend stole my emergency savings and ditched me, and went with a long-time friend who pretty much left to do his own thing.

So for the first time, I just wondered around alone watching people be happy while I was absolutely miserable. I haven't been to a con since and I don't plan to ever go to another one.

I just don't see the point to going to one alone.

Pax East, I went in 2011 and it was amazing, again in 2015 and it sucked ass, massive crowd, people moving 2 mph, exhibits were worst, but more crowded, and they had people harassing everyone about badges like they didn't have 20x the people

It was crowded, wandered to a place out of the way of the main floor and then I saw a bunch of furries getting into fursuits in an open side room and immediately felt disgusted. Later saw those same furries taking pictures with kids and felt very concerned. I hate fursuits. Also got a nice haunter plush so that was nice.

Also, funny how I started going to cons and attempted to try photography in order to fix my social anxiety problems and find friends.

Still can't find friends (probably I'm unable to hold relationships) and I'm still rather scared when talking to people but damn, I absolutely LOVE photographing events, concerts and cosplayers. The best part is when you ask some amateur cosplayer for few snaps and she is visibly happy that somebody noticed her cosplay. I like making people happy.

what pisses me off is that you pay a good amount for the ticket alone and then all the shops there sell their shit for like 20-50% over market price.
You get some shitty stage acts and basically pay for advertisement and the best you can hope for is a good music act.
The only other good thing at cons oogling cosplayers and every year they increase safety measures and guidelines so they can't wear too little nor too much and have you pay for changing rooms and cloaking and registering your fake weapons that are only allowed if they are like 99% foam. I feel bad for anyone that bothers.
Those cons are only good for meetups and I've see many groups that don't even enter the venue, they just meetup at a public space next to it.

For vidya cons everything that is new or interesting will have hours of waiting lines. Last years Gamescom had MHWilds demo and the waiting lines were 8 hours.

I recently had very depressing realisation about cons. For years I would run into all those jokes about sex at cons, escorts, joke signs like "the organizers are not responsible for children conceived during the convention" and the like. But at other thread recently somebody on Anon Babble linked some twitter artist profile, where author was uploading (and deleting after 15 minutes) nudes and related comments and I began to wonder - what if these are not all jokes? There's a bunch of Anon Babble anons that bring a truck every year and it's gotten bigger and better each time, while the convention itself gets worse and worse. Last year the anons got WT Snacks, korsk, hara and Mint Fantome. This year they had DJ Sharpnel and Marimari. There was an arcade cabinet with a bunch of fighting games, a mahjong autotable, milk crates of cunny doujins (I don't know how they got these), and a lot more. If a convention isn't fun in and of itself, you just have to find the people that are.

I've been to a lot of cons, major ones like NYCCC and TwitchCon and PAX, and smaller ones. Some as just a fan, most as a content creator/invited guest.

When I'm there with friends, it's fine. You walk around, you meet people, you see stuff together, etc. But any time I end up alone or whatever, it feels horrible to me. It's a really weird feeling, I don't really know why it happens, but it's like some crushing existential dread and loneliness that comes from being packed in a big room with thousands of people and having no one to talk to.

I have never done a booth or anything, but I might sometime in the future if my work is something people want to buy (right now I just do published illustration stuff).

One of the weird things about mentalities like these are you still assume someone had to do something before you for it to be ok. You people do realize the world is changing right? In the past 10 years anime went from being abnormal to mainstream, past 20 same for gaming. Like going to cons while old may have been a niche thing for a few elderly nerds but it will soon become the norm as you now have at least 4 generations who've had nerd conventions.

The vidya conventions I went to were mostly just for selling games and general PC stuff, not the kind for hyping up upcoming releases and they were okay, even as a little kid, pretty bland but got some good deals. The most chill con I've been to was one for boardgames, SPIEL, even if I didn't speak the local language very well. It branched out into general nerdy stuff so there were stands with comics, anime and LARP gear and lots of places to try weird little experimental boardgames you'd never hear of otherwise. From what I've heard it's been suffering from getting too much attendance and broadening their horizons a bit too much though. But the few times I went I had fun doing competitive fedora spotting with a friend.

It does seem to be kind of luck of the draw. One year they only had CVS2 and 3S by way of retro games and there was maybe one other person who knew anything about CVS2 and I had to switch to 3S to get decent games, then next year there was a pretty consistent stream of damn solid CVS2 players, then last year they had ST and VSav in addition to the other two and a decent enough rotation of people who knew what they were doing to pretty comfortably carry the weekend. Can only hope for such good fortune tomorrow.

I tried some gook rhythm game. I saw some cosplays. I walked around. I considered buying some merch, but then decided there wasn't anything I'd be really interested in. I soaked in the atmosphere.
Overall, a rather mid experience, and I doubt I'll go to another game con, but at least now I know.
