As much as I love the story teams, I do hope there's plenty of opportunity in one of the single player gamemodes to actually use all of the random characters you scout off the streets or poach off the opponent teams.
Also above all else I hope they changed the way stats work. Retraining players to play on different positions being the most efficient way to minmax was fucking stupid.

There were six games across DS and 3DS, each with 300+ new characters, plus anime adaptations for all of them including two anime-original seasons with their own characters (this game was initially supposed to be about those seasons but it kept getting delayed by almost a decade and was eventually rebooted), plus original characters for this game specifically.

I never understood why they force you to use specific characters in the story, just let me scout my team from scratch and make story beats tied to positions. If the 9 needs to have an identity crisis about being the son of a genocidal alien or whatever, just let me lock in a dude for that and thatll be his story

You couldn't have girls on your team in the first game since the story was all about winning the middle school boys soccer cup. The only role for girls was to be club manager or scout.
The moment the plot escalates to alien soccer soldiers attacking earth who are actually earthling orphan child soldiers to advertize an arm's dealer's new product they waste no time inviting girls to the team.
