Why don't gamers use Linux for gaming?
Why don't gamers use Linux for gaming?
youre delusional if you think gamers, the horde of faggots crying about muh jank and muh clunkyness, will give linux more than 10 minutes before dropping it
also linux is just shit regardless
because for decades microsoft has paid retailers to load windows on to the computers they sell, along with other aggressive business tactics.
microsoft's technology is largely dogshit.
Implying I don't
most people are too retarded or lazy to use it
People generally don't want to reinstall their OS every week.
People find Linux Server to a pain in the ass and you expect gamers to use Linux?
why would they
once support ends for 10, I think there will be a decent number of converters (myself included)
command line scawwy
No easy plug-and-play OS like Windows for them to use.
Currently changing with SteamOS, especially since Windows has gotten extremely fucking bloated and now ends up running a lot worse in some cases.
Personally, once I can no longer play new games on W10 I'm moving to SteamOS.
command line

1. Laziness
Why change anything when the default is working? Also Windows came installed on their laptop at purchase.
2. Stupidity
Even the easiest to install/use Linux distros require a basic level of computer skill which many people lack.
3. Software lock
Some people use a specific software (adobe, some Liveservice games with anticheat, etc…) and are unwilling to sacrifice it
4. Fear
Combination of the above plus general propaganda creating a fear of technology in general.
Goyslop goytube thumbnail thread here we go moronic goyfriends!
Because I value my time.
oh I can get most games kinda running sometimes
yeah no thanks how about you go fuck yourself, if I wanted to spend all my time fixing a broken piece of shit I'd buy a classic car. At least then I'd have something of value for my effort.
Because I value my time.

Gaming on linux is quite nice now. Bottles + ge proton has basically worked for everything for me. Only have to use an older version of wine proton for some gacha game.
shitposting is way more fun than troubleshooting
Yes, I enjoy my time here. I choose to spend my time on Anon Babble, just as I choose not to spend my time dealing with Linux bullshit.
you do x thing so you must also have time for y thing
is invalid.
retards here will say it's because Windows or Mac are more accessible like it's a bad thing
my time is le heckin le precious

I am not wasting my time, I am spending it wisely. I find enjoyment in speaking to retarded people on the internet.
I find zero enjoyment in dealing with broken software.

gamers use Linux for gaming
That's right. I am not wasting my time. I am spending time on my hobby.
Thank you for being here and enriching my experience anon.
OSX is even less relevant than Linux for gaming, get the fuck outta here.
It requires a functioning brain.

But anon, this is not wasting my time. Every time I hit reply, I feel a spark of joy.

I don't use Mac so I wouldn't know. Granted, the only footage I've seen of someone playing a game on Mac was Dobson with that Skyrim video.
I would rather respond to you until bump limit than ever consider gaming on linux :)

Because it's like a fucking cult.
My collage friend was your ordinary collage freshmen, but when he decided to use linux on his laptop because his shitty laptop can't run the new windows. He became a linux shill.
No kidding, he able to shills linux in any conversation. This fucking guy managed to talk about how great linux is when i have a problem looking fro bowling alley from my phone, saying stupid shit like "with linux, you wouldn't have that problem, you can find places easier!".
I'd switch if they weren't so faggy.
i don't want to touch a terminal
make it as accessible as windows and i'll hop over, otherwise fuck off
barrier to entry is steeper than Windows
hard to let go of all the prior knowledge you've accrued for a different OS
you basically have to learn the whole thing from scratch
does not support all video games in existence
If I had more money and could afford a proper workspace with two computers, I would have separate systems from creative endeavors and gaming.
You do know you don't have to use it right?
Why are wincels so scared of typing anyway? Like do they piss themselves everytime they post?
I saw it, what now?
Linux is not good for personal use. ill never understand why this is so hard for the severely autistic to admit.
Like yes, this open source FREE os has an inferior user interface, and requires troubleshooting and scripting for basic functions. That's okay. There's no shame in admitting that a handful of fat nerds can't compete with billion dollar companies.
Please see
Because Linux needs to be installed of their own volition and normalfags will habitually choose the worst options just because they're the defaults, the most talked about or the first in a list.
Even if they got a laptop with pre-loaded corpoware, it used to be something Like Ubuntu with GNOME, one of the easiest ways to discourage someone from sticking with Linux, something that wasn't helped by the fact that the laptop in question was frequently a netbook of questionable ability.
If you didn't switch after 7, there is no hope unless you switch now regardless of the state of 10 support.
Windows wastes more of your time. Sure you've learned Windows by putting up with it for years, but Windows will continue to waste more of your time with its inefficient workflow that turns everything into manual labor of the least effective variety.
Terminal is the easiest and fastest way to do something that's not graphical in nature and can easily be automated. Learn to read.

Linux Server to be a pain in the ass
If you were implying that openbsd is the superior server os you would be right but somehow you are claiming that windows server is better which makes you pants on head retarded.
In fairness, there are some very friendly distros out there even before SteamOS and the community that has. There's Ubuntu and its many flavors and Linux Mint too, and you can straight up experiment with using the OS via the Live USB before installing it to your system. I think choice paralysis and sunk cost with Windows are the bigger hurdles Linux has to over come.
wayland
Just spend 4-6 hours a week troubleshooting every time you wanna do something new
Get cancer linux trannies. I'm still pissed that you wasted my time shilling mint
11 feels the exact same as 10 after you do a few tweaks when you first install it
Maybe you can get your collage friend to teach you proper English during your scrapbooking sessions.
Because Linux is and always was a downgrade when it comes to gaming. It's a programmer tranny OS, nothing more. And said trannies never knew how to actually figure out game compability, gaming on linux only made a bit of progress through outside influence.
I don't want to export and re-setup all of my web-browsers and extensions again, also don't want to deal with Windows murdering my bootloader whenever it updates.
I'm gonna set up a secondary drive with just Linux and daily drive it when I next upgrade my PC however, been very happy with SteamOS on my deck.
he fell for the mint meme
LMAO
scrapbooking
See, fucking hive mind cult.
Anon, go google what the word "collage" means.
Then ask your much smarter friend to teach your ESL ass proper English.
Linux is good for actual useful stuff. The kind of things that can net you money and the respect of your pers and the community.
Vidya and the kind of garbage only pathetic manchildren do are better in Windows yeah.

5. Linux is shit
nnooooooooo I am not heckin le retarded!!!!!!
Why are wincels like this?
Because Linux needs to be installed of their own volition and normalfags will habitually choose the worst options just because they're the defaults, the most talked about or the first in a list.
Gee, I wonder why that is. Maybe it's because Windows always was the everyday OS that just works while Linux is a meme for contrarians and programmer troons.
file managers suck, hdr and vr sucks, most desktop environments suck, libreoffice sucks, audio sucks, and no anticheat support sucks
thanks
Because native Linux software sucks beyond belief
Notice how gaming on Linux was completely fucking dead for decades before Wine got good enough to actually play Windows games
Does every nvidia feature work and HDR work now? Because if not linux is still a joke
Most people don't have AGP therefore they stick to Windows obviously. Linux is tranny coded

Anticheat's a mixed bag, some work, but the invasive shit doesn't, that's honestly a plus in my book.
All these suck on windows too wdym
99.99% of people don't change their OS. Only like 1.4% of Steam gamers have changed their OS. Most people just don't care, which is sad since Windows is really just unbearable.
There's no shame in admitting that a handful of fat nerds can't compete with billion dollar companies.
Omits the fact that most people who contribute to Linux code are full-time employees of big corporations like Red Hat or Oracle, etc.
Laziness
Why change anything when the default is working?
That isn't laziness. That's just common sense.
Try linux
it's okay, but I'd like to do a few customizations to get it looking the way I want
try to change the wallpaper
kernel panic
try to get help
it's on several different discord or matrix chats
they're all trooned out and talking about everything but open source software
get banned because troons are freaking out that random e-celeb is talking about linux and therefore anyone who is new MUST be one of e-celeb's followers
Yeah, I wonder.
why would i fuck around with linux troubleshooting random bs when windows works 100% out of the box. im trying to play vidya not impress faggots on the internet
Still funny how gaming on Linux had its biggest software advance just because a guy wanted to play Nier Automata on his Linux PC, so he put in the gruntwork to get 2B's ass on to Linux and proliferated it to the kernels. The old greybeard Linux guys never gave a fuck about being able to use PC to play proprietary video game software.
Also omits the fact that at least one billion dollar company was incredibly frightened of Linux back in the day.
I wish I had whatever Windows you have that "just works". I'd take your statement seriously if you were a MacOS cultist, but since I've used Windows starting with 95 I know you're full of shit.

You a woman or something?
This post and photo is retarded, gay and untrue
A bunch of lies
Any time a post mentions kernel panics I just stop reading, while they may be akin to BSoDs, they are an order of magnitude rarer. If using a user friendly distro with working hardware you're unlikely to have a kernel panic, so it's obvious that it's written by someone who hasn't ever experienced one.
Troonix thread again. Windows lives rent free in their heads. Hahaha.
Jank enjoying Linux user here
Can confirm
Linux is fucking awful
Shame windows isn't an endless abyss of telemetry and obligate system updates.
I have a compatible TPM, but like fuck I want Microsoft to effectively take the keys to my entire system.
There's so much you have to undo, and could break at any moment, either as a consequence of some software down the line relying on a 'feature' you long since disabled using any number of sketchy tools or install methods, or part and parcel of a future update, it's just not worth the hassle any more.
Where window's features typically 'just work', I'll spend so much time now just undoing others 'features' I absolutely do not want on my system, typically using utterly sketchy tools I am in no place to audit assuming its even open source in the first place, that it is a trivial distinction to submit bug reports so some striped socks wearing faggot can patch the relevant kernel/distro shortcoming.
I have to say I'm curious what people find so awful about Linux. As a long time Windows user I have been having a pretty damn good time, this is way less jank than my Windows install was.
Windows and Mac have had their share of exposure in the media, both in commercials and as the operating system used by characters in TV and movies.
By contrast Linux hasn't had a similar push, being at most used as a joke or surface level detail for a long time.
The normalfag simply does not use things without a media presence.
No I'm not wondering why people don't use it, I'm wondering what the massive issues that people are having are. Since I got nothing.
I use both :D
It's not massive issues so much as a lot of shit just won't work on Linux without a lot more effort. HDR, for instance, on Windows is a toggle in display settings. On Linux it only works on certain distros.
Plus, all the usual arguments you see about you don't need X that Linux doesnt support or supports poorly does it no favors in terms of making people switch.
Linux is not good for personal use
Then explain why me, as a personal user, for personal use, often find myself having to use linux to achieve some simple task that big corpo Windows blocks me from doing?
use bootable OS off flashdrive
linux has me covered, Windows does not.
disk images
linux has me covered, Windows does not.
file server that doesn't reboot itself
linux has me covered, Windows does not.
lightweight OS that can run a browser on old hardware
linux has me covered, Windows does not.
I would say Windows is more for professional corporate use with locked down machines and remote access shit and Linux is better tailored for normie basic personal use unless you're a slop consumer like a AAA gaymur or need muhDOBE software and REFUSE to use something else
like really
do non-techie boomers even know what keyboard shortcuts do? no, they don't, they just open their browser and do everything there
there's basically nothing stopping such users from just running Ubuntu instead other than the fact that their computers probably already have Windows
it's even more likely for tech illiterates to get by with linux these days than it ever has been with things like cloud shit being accessible via a browser
they don't even need to learn new software because mircosoft/google's apps can work in a browser and work cross-platform now
I don't think people should switch if they can't do what they want on it. For me, though, Windows is just too awful to use at this point. Windows 10 was still barely tolerable but 11 is too much. I'll give up everything that doesn't work just so I don't have to use that...
But Linux isn't actually awful and I didn't really need to give up anything except the benchmarking and stability testing tools I was used to.
Too dumb and lazy, even though you just have to enable proton in steam. It takes only a couple clicks and you're good to go. Works fine for me. Linux Mint Debian Edition. Getting just as good, if not better, performance, compared to Wangblows.
Dude, why don't you use this solution that sometimes works, sometimes doesn't and nobody knows why
...instead of this stupid OS that everyone already have, just works and auto-fix itself if something goes wrong?
Mystery.
want to play Doom: the dark ages
game crashes on startup
have to add a repo for newer mesa drivers
update system and restart
game gets to main screen but crashes when the level starts
add another repo with even newer drivers
update system and restart
the graphics are corrupted and full of artefacts
decide to compile mesa drivers myself
finally the game loads but the performance is dogshit (half of windows)
see that AMDVLK is the recommended driver for dark ages
unpack that, update some configs, add som launch options
game doesn't launch at all now
restart steam using terminal so i can get some output on whats failing
gamescope isn't happy with AMDVLK with RADV as main drivers
have to run the game without gamescope because gamescope doesn't support RADV while referencing AMDVLK
game finally launches and plays with good performance and graphics
when I close the game KDE is stuttering because VRR is engaged on my desktop
fix the stuttering by logging out and back in
now VRR is completely broken and stops working so other games are stuttering
have to reboot PC after playing the dark ages
The time tax on linux is real.
its the year of the linux dekstop
Also, if you're using an Nvidia GPU, all you have to do is copy and paste a couple commands into the CLI and restart your PC and you're good to go. Unless you have a driver manager, it's just a couple clicks. And IIRC, if you're using an AMD GPU, you don't have to do any of that, it all just werks ootb. Couldn't be easier.
You forgot to add Linux Witness fanatics complaining about you "lack of skill and laziness".
windows shitters actually believe this
On Linux it only works on certain distros.
At most this would be because it's as newish feature, so it might not be available on distros that are more interested in offering a stable experience (Debian and derivatives), but you wouldn't use those for gaming compatibility anyway.
HDR is available as a feature with Gamescope and certain DEs and WMs, it isn't locked to certain distros.
Plus, all the usual arguments you see about you don't need X that Linux doesnt support or supports poorly does it no favors in terms of making people switch.
Linux mostly lacks full support in cases of outright malice from other companies(Nvidia, Adobe, Autodesk, Epic), so the argument is somewhat valid. Why support a product from a company that hates you and wants to make your life harder?
Windows support for features that are available on Linux is also stunted or absent, mainly due to Microsoft, so that's inarguably worse.
Yes, it is quite weird that people still use Windows in the post-XP landscape.
Microsoft has a history of sabotage like this, just like Nvidia does.
imagine wanting to do your own jeet tech support in your free time
And how often you need these features you listed? These are rare and specific cases, not everyday requirements. Tailored Linux distros have their use but for everyday nor almuser, Windows is simply better solution.
me on the right (except im a linux user)
muh XP
I fucking knew it, Linux retards are still stuck at XP era.
kek im genuinely interested what kind of retard distro you chose
only pedophiles need an OS that boots off USB
/vee/, /gee/, explain to me this - why Linux fans claim to be smart and capable of dedicating time to fix their beloved OS issues and yet they are unable to read MS own manuals and incapable of disabling updates/telemetry/etc in Windows?
A computer that doesn't restart itself is a good everyday feature for everyone. I had updates turned off on my Windows 10 so it never restarted itself, but that's not normal for Windows.
I switched to Linux in march and have been enjoying it.
Windows restart itself!
but I made mine doesn't
but it's still Windows fault!
Listen to yourself.
I had Enterprise Windows, most people don't.
Most people have at least Pro, which also allows updates to be disabled via Group Policy editor.
Come back home, brown manjavascript:;
Linux gives everyday people enough rope to hang themselves with and then expects them to read about the rope to understand it.
if a moron cant intuit how to do stuff it's worthless and will never ever ever become mainstream.
They're not all trannies, yet.
Because windows just werk
Don't you have to be a tech genius and like, code all your shit for it to work? Nah, I'll just use a premade program that works out the box and tweak it to my interests kekekeke
cuz it sucks
Because everything on linux is a UX nightmare while windows just works
Windows is a total UX nightmare chumbo, Windows 11 anyway. Windows 10 is so so. Not as bad because it has a lot less nested bullshit, but there's still a decent amount of it and it's nasty to use if you don't know lusrmgr.msc, gpedit.msc, devmgmt.msc, services.msc and all the other crap a power user needs by head.
I'm starting to forget since I haven't used them for a while now.
Windows 11 Pro at this point is objectively better than Windows 10 provided you aren't tech illiterate.
Lack of sensible defaults.
fedora gnome
no cigar, lets try a bit harder. Until vaxry manages to wrangle his hyprmeme into a proper DE we're stuck with configuration hell. This autist is linux desktop last hope.
t. awesomewm struggler
No thanks. The UI is absolute dogshit, makes Windows 7 look ergonomic. The only Windows install I have is 11 by the way so you can't gaslight me into thinking it's acceptable, because I can just use it both at work and on my youtube laptop to find out you're full of shit.
Want to move taskbar on Windows 11
Ok, so first you're going to need open regedit, because the taskbar on the bottom is a deliberate Microsoft engineering decision sar, definitely not because this was the only way to get it to behave correctly.
Oh and you can only have the taskbar on top or on the bottom after changing the value in the registry
Did they fix this yet? It feels less and less like they can actually get a fully fledged launch going, instead being stuck in an eternal loop of alpha testing.
ani-cheats are gay and you are a faggot for hating libreoffice
too lazy for those just wanting plug & play. i still occasionally use windows because modding a game i'm playing sucks
Windows for gaming.
Linux for all coding, Sillytavern and work projects.
tbfam unless they've made some very drastic and fundamental improvements, libreoffice is really fucking bad
what distro you were on ? sounds like you chose something hard
The best distro requires at least 95 IQ to install and use, it's a lost battle.
Isn't this the guy that had the falling out/drama with wendell who is now level 1 techs? how did that work out for him? everyone forgot about him and Wendell got the bigger audience. Sounds kind of idiotic to me since Tek Syndicate became irrelevant afterwards.
I recently discovered about compatbility layers and managed to run windows only game on my m1 air in 5 minutes using kegworks.
1. how long have these been around?
2. was I lucky with that specific game?
3. is there any reason left to still stay in windows?
also why did it take so long for these to be a thing? isn't the core idea relatively simple?
or were they just waiting there to be pushed by apple's gptk or steamos/proton?
muh time
Battle cry of the retard.
Linux
- consistent style
- easy to navigate
- customizable
- not sub-menus within sub-menus
- can use quite comfortably even if you don't have a mouse
Windows
- some programs still show in Win 3.1, there is no consistency, the style and UX is all over the place, there are multiple versions of the same control panel
navigation is extremely bad, everything remotely useful is hidden in some advanced options
can't even move your taskbar
sub-menus within sub-menus even for basic features
mouse needed, even if you use it on freaking gaming handheld
Thanks but no thanks. Modern Windows is a definition of enshitified product. Wouldn't be surprised to learn that MS fired all their UX department are replaced it with AI
let windows spy on you and see pictures of your asshole
OR
deal with the most autistic faggots on the internet whenever you have to figure even the most minor of issues with your system which is almost everyday
Frankly speaking its not a Linux issue per se but rather with the fact all systems are fucked and what or how kind of fucked depends on preference at this point.
Writer and Calc work for me flawlessly, never really felt like I needed more
What the fuck did you install, nigger, Hannah Montana Linux?
fresh windows install
download steam
0 error messages
download video game
0 error messages
boot video game
0 error messages
fresh linux install
download steam
work through several error messages
download video game
work through several error messages
boot video game
work through several error messages
Its been decades and a fresh Linux install cant to the most basic shit without the user having to manually work through countless errors. The only minor credit I can give is that the error messages are not just gibberish mostly nowadays.
Im not good enough with computers to know why Linux sucks so bad out of the box, but normies will refuse to use it until this ultra obvious gaping hole is fixed.
replaced with AI
Worse, jeets.
Why do you lie on the internet?
kernel panic
I genuinely don't even know what kernel panic looks like in Linux and I've been on Ubuntu for over the decade at this point
On the other hand BSoD is quite familiar to me
I haven't seen a single error message doing what you just described on Linux. Well, I did get an error message in a video game but it was because I had lowered my SOC voltage too low and computer was unstable lol.
Not like you don't get BSOD in Windows from that.
literally the same thing
Whenever they call something AI what they really mean is that they outsourced the project to some low paid Indians
Because the vast majority of users are normies that grew up with windows and don't want to experiment?
The only way you're getting widespread Linux adoption is if valve keeps sinking money into it and releases more normalfag usable hardware like the 'eck and the steam box and properly advertises it
Does everything you touch also spontaneously combust?
Want to move to linux
Friends all telling me just use Arch
Some people say Ubuntu
Internally i'm a huge contrarian
If i pick an unusual distro i'll have to deal with more problems
If i make it work i can satisfy my contrarianism
Probably don't even have the mental capability to figure it out in the first place
Just go on without me Anons. Bill Gates has me by the balls.
Arch is easy as fuck to use if you use it with KDE and read the wiki. I was almost surprised when my shitty Xbox controller just connected with bluetooth and worked instantly.
But there are more retard friendly KDE distros out there like Fedora which don't have you install everything manually like a weirdo.
Ubuntu is trash. You'll instantly want to go back to Windows.
Small story to illustrate why I won't even bother to use Linux on desktop. When I was doing PhD studies, I decided to install, as a test, Mint distro at my PC. Everything was looking fine until I had to do actual work and I discovered that none of programs I needed work properly or work at all on Mint and bothering with Wine was just neverending problem solving train. All equivalents of software like Origin or AutoCAD would be literal garbage. Even had problems with how Open and Libre Office would deal with MS Office files. In the end, I switched back to Win7, later 10 and never looked back. Oh and Linux, of course, couldn't handle our printer.
We also had Debian at PC used solely for controlling measurement station that would randomly reset USB ports and rearrange their numbers, effectively fucking up whatever was running at that time. Turned out that was known issue and nobody, I mean NOBODY on various discussions boards knew how to deal with that. That's what kind of mess Linux is and that's why I won't waste my time with it.
