modder here. its far less interesting than you think. I would often get people asking me for help with my mod, just to find out they are using an outdated, unupdated, pirated version of the game, and I cant be bothered to troubleshoot a game on a non updated version.

In many cases however a mod won't work with pirated versions simply because the pirated version is an old version of the game and mods need to be for the current version. Saying "NOT SUPPORTED" means he's not going to make a special version for the pirates.

Proper cracks don't work exactly as the original copy. If they worked exactly as the original copy that would include the copy protection. Proper is just the nomenclature used when a crack is being released to replace a previous crack that ostensibly doesn't work for some reason or another. Often it's just released for flexing purposes, i.e. "The previous crack did work but we think our crack is better so we've dubbed it a proper."

cracked copies wont magically break things. in fact, they will be more compatible because the exe wont change on its own one day when the game decides that it needs to be updated. also, with cracked shit, you have less shit being injected and less dependencies to rely on when theyre all emulated in a manner. no steam overlays, no other bloat, just a game in its purest form.

Most games on Steam rely on the bundled DRM. The .exe will be the same in those cases.
