It really has been the most artificially astroturfed game I've seen in many years. Everyone decided it was going to be legendary well before it released and just kept up the push afterwards. Weird that nobody can seem to explain why it's good exactly they just speak in broad generalities.

Square's FF/KH team have always been excellent at creating real time combat, and are far better at that than any attempt to create a decent turn based game (where they've actually been consistently mogged by Pokemon and Dragon Quest lol). Their development of action/ATB hybrid systems has resulted in games with actual depth and actual have both proper action gameplay and tactical management elements, but they just aren't appreciated by the braindead idiots who thought that FF ever have good turn based gameplay.

Conversely, E33 is *exactly* the worst and most shallow possible approach to 'hybrid' combat, where pressing a button at the right (but arbitrary) time is what everything hinges on, and this makes everything else barely of importance in comparison. I have no idea why they're acting like they're delivering something 'back to the roots' of anything.

Then you should realize, E33 is extremely shallow gameplay wise compared to HSR. In before '2 skills per char!' - HSR mechanics and game modes are made challenging by different mechanics and approaches, where you actually have to strategize, plan parttty and use of abilities - as opposed the "press dodge" or lose in Expedition 33. The combat in HSR is just plain more fun, especially in like of virtual world or challenges.

Lets also not forgett the overal qualitty of polish, art, music (important, since Expedition 33 music is very annoying Nier wannabe wailing as opposed to HSR tunes that are plain stellar).

Dark Souls 1 is 3D Metroidvania.
Elden Ring is open world.
SMTV is semi-open world with a small number of very big, but separate areas.
E33 has an overworld similar to old school RPGs which leads to multiple distinct, but somewhat linear areas.

The only similarity in combat between E33 and Persona is the UI and elemental weaknesses, but the latter isn't unique to Persona.
E33's combat is more similar to Shadow Hearts or Paper Mario.

Took me three tries with the first (it IS weird jank, after all), one with the second, and four with the third. I was awake for like 30 hours at that point. I spent way more with some bosses because jukes.
