I really enjoyed the Arena boss mod ( nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/5645 ), but even though it's great, it's still not enough. (Like roguelite mod isn't roguelite-y enough, it should be randomized boss and not every boss but like 30 40 / run or something like that).
And modding on ER is soooooooo fucking bad. You can get one mod, but two? That's not possible. So you can't really randomize the enemies with another mod to try to have a true roguelite run.

And other ultra fun gameplay mods like Sword Heart Shura ( nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/7764 , I really recommend it to try) are limited by the fact that you can only play the "base" game unmodded....

PvP is a tertiary system that clearly feels like an afterthought with Covenants being reduced to some badges for slight variations outside of the DLC which adds in two Dragon Covenant Equivalent ,and The League for actual PvE benifits.

DS3

The system is once again reduced to swappable badges which all play relative the same in killing the host or beating the boss, mound makers are the only unique one but is essence they are just another invader type most of the time. Covenant system is the same as DS2 with little innovation and the arenas being removed till the DLC.

ER

Covenants are cut in development and the only remnant of PvP is getting to the Moghwyn stuff early. Otherwise is the most striped back its ever been only allowing for 2v1s until the dlc came out in which only the summon fights offer anything truly new.

They had a good thing going in Das and DS2 in different ways and yet gradually abandoned the system over time for no good reason.

I legit think Artorias is one of the reasons. They didn't comprehend it then yet fully but that was the turning point where "slow and deliberate" started fully turning to action. Bloodborne cemented that gameplay style fully and it was also the game where people could completely choose to avoid PvP by killing chime maidens, which they did. The multiplayer also doesn't really fit in anymore, pvp only really worked as a rebalancer for being able to turn human and summon people. Once that mechanic disappeared pvp was just there for its own sake.

The genre moving forward is what turned me away. I couldn't even finish Elden Ring. Got to the snowfield area and just realized I wasn't having fun. It was the exact same loop as the previous handful of games, with the same shit archaic multiplayer hassle and same shit shinies behind random ruins "exploration". Meanwhile Nioh and Remnant propelled the genre forward so hard From feels even more archaic in comparison. Even the Demon's Souls remake fixed the bullshit multiplayer in areas where the boss is alive situation, From didn't even copy that simple thing.

I don't get the love for souls. They're just kill simulators with nothing else to do and don't have either rpg mechanics or a sense of adventure in their games. They're just half assed action slop that were dime a dozen during the 00s musou fad rage.

Other than that it's the atmosphere that sells them, from modest and desolate areas with thiefs and prisoners to epic buildings with knights and old kings well past their glory days, moving through a dying world is at the same time comfy and oppressive, I think it's neat

nah anytime i tried watching a speedrun of ER like 75% of the time the streamer is riding torrent through a huge field to the next area. a total slog after your first playthrough

It isn't. You play a preset character with a defined weapon, playstyle and personality. The story is straight forward and doesn't rely on post-it notes stuck to every lootable item. There is no RPG or level up feature, you can only improve your attack via items gained from defeating specific bosses.

Multiplayer games die constantly, and the game’s meta currently is going mach 10 to every objective. Hell even Elden Ring with the seamless co-op mod is more of a meme fest.

There is no sense of adventure in an open world where every castle/fortress/encampment is just a collection of zombies for you to murder.

Elden Ring desperately needs actual towns, NPC hubs, anything to give a sense that there is even anything worth ruling over. It's not an adventure that works when the objective is to be crowned king of the zombie shitheap world.

The point of the souls/ER games is they’re more or less a post apocalyptic setting. Having lively fantasy towns really goes against that idea. Though I do wish we had more hubs like Majula from ds2, that slowly build up to being a pseudo fantasy village.

It's literally hardlocked souls characters with very primitive moveset changes. They basically get one unique moveset per weapon class and 3 ashes of war on a cooldown. Dutchess also gets DWGR from DS1. That's it.

Elden Ring takes place in the aftermath of a war, where all of the lords involved in the war are still alive and sentient, their territories are more or less stable, but somehow every single soldier is a mindless husk. They don't even bother to justify this shit in Elden Ring, it's just mindlessly aping what earlier Souls games did with no regard for making it make sense.

Finding Gwynevere's illusion in DS1 is still a moment that felt more climactic than anything in Elden Ring, where they clearly want the scale to be grander, and they put animals every 10 feet to let you know the world is still alive, and there are still lords around, but the exploration still amounts to nothing but the same mindless murder spree bullshit.

An adventure is more than just being able to talk to NPCs in towns, is also the sense of mystery and wonder the world evoques and FromSoft does that pretty well. Look at Starfield for a failed example of "many towns" to visit. Anyway, I agree they could add more hubs with friendly NPCs to their games and less try hard misery porn.

I had an easier time with two players, so I assumed there was scaling.
