tutorial mines weren't in the game in 1999. it just dropped you in your starting city after character creation. a lot of EQ's appeal came from being 12 years old when you got the game and it being this huge, persistent, mysterious online world. Any wiki-like sites (Allakhazam) were really incomplete so you couldn't just look everything up and sharing cutting edge information wasn't standard since this was pre-reddit internet and knowledge was power in the game.
Final Fantasy XI took the EQ formula and improved on a lot of aspects of the gameplay (combat in particular, also graphics and music) while making other things worse (movement, zone design).
Then WoW came along and here we are. Classic WoW was legitimately a very good successor to EQ but it got worse with every expansion.
He actually plays the games for a bit and tells funi joke so even if you don't agree with his analysis always it's still really entertaining. Also his single player game reviews are great and thorough.

You could make a case for class balancing but most of that was rectified fairly quickly with most classes getting talent tree revamps around the time of the BWL patch. I'm not saying the team did a perfect job because their insistence on arbitrarily changing shit and then at other times worshipping the code and vowing to never change it led to memorable things like:

Ill use DFO as an example, for a long time after initial release, lvls 1-40 were out, and the journey of playing the game through the forest, into sky tower, then behemoth took awhile and you learned how the game played and getting good gear was a massive boon, having a full party could still wipe on the king difficulty but ultimately the journey was just as important as the destination, now the game is so focused on end game shit that everything is an absolute cakewalk to that point its just not interesting to play

1. It fucked up launch.

2. Because it fucked up launch WoW could megarape it at their launch with their much simpler dumb-downed gameplay and more mainstream recognizable setting, riding off the great success of warcraft 3.
3. Shadowlands expansion was its last attempt at staying relevant by copying WoW's fantasy genre. It was a great expansion. One of the best in vidya history, but it was faaaaar too late. The damage was already done (at launch).

So even if they end up acting in the exact same manner the viewer already has the extra context needed to identify issues with the criticism.

why are there basic armor missions in the tutorial area (basic armor is a crafting component for alien armor, which requires the alien invasion expansion pack)? new players will have no idea what to do with these, and if they are f2p the items will be useless for them anyways (yes they could finish the missions and sell the basic armor but why not give new players something they can actually use??)
and regarding money - why do the missions in the tutorial area give like 2k credits, then when you leave they give like 300 at the most? how are players supposed to get new gear and nanos once they leave the tutorial area and don't have any money? wait till they are lvl 60 for the 10k credits from turning the the totw wine bottle??? why do subway mobs drop so little money??

I do think in a way it's depressing that a lot of super niche MMOs are forced to do these things just so any new players who accidentally stumble on it can actually play with people, simply because it's more expedient/cheaper than creating systems to incentivize vets to actually help noobs get through the game normally. At least something like Guild Wars 1 (not an MMO but for the sake of an example) lets you run through the whole game with NPC party members so you can just play it as one big solo-RPG.
