I've seen so many blogs and articles and people go on about how japanese games need to be localized in order to "capture" the same feeling in english and that japanese can't simply be translated into english. Is this true or not? I've seen so many examples of japanese games getting "localized" and being translated via MTL and the MTL always looks more accurate. Localization just seems like a term grifters made up to make their job seem more important and special than it is. It always seems like an excuse to censor and add stupid memes into english language versions of games.
Is "localization" actually needed in video games?
gcjfags will see this and say "UHHHH YOU CANT TRANSLATE LITERALLY CHUD"
If "localizing" was actually just localizing, it wouldn't be too bad.
The problem is when (usually left-wing) translators just add entirely new dialogue.
it depends on the game mostly. take yugioh for example. the cards themselves are literal translation while the anime is "localized". people generally agree that kaiba is pretty good dub or sub because they both get the character across.
I've seen so many examples of japanese games getting "localized" and being translated via MTL and the MTL always looks more accurate
lol lmao
My man, an entire generation grew up shitting on the Yuugiou "adaptation" (or ANY 4kids "adaptation" for the matter)
they're anti-establishment street punks, those types talk like that as opposed to being boring conservatives or anime characters
street punks
So boring vapid people
LOCALIZATION IS JUST RACIST IMPERIALISM BUT WOKE
Like the French did when they colonized all the savages in africa to teach them liberal values
please remove leftoids from all of culture
And colonizing is le bad because..,
That generation also thought YGO Abridged was funny so clearly they're wrong.
The problem is when (usually left-wing) translators just add entirely new dialogue.
rent free
Wannabe establishment street punks if anything. Most are nepohires and trustfund kids with actual money that can afford to eat the shit wages.
Because now they're coming here because we were retarded enough to civilize them (or tried to)
Considering how much you scream and dilate over landlords, I doubt it.
Is "localization" actually needed in video games?
No the entire field of profession has spiraled out of control
Initially localization departments were tasked with translation + voice over work in the new language + QA testing for the translated product + work with marketing teams in the relevant countries. This combination of tasks is why it was a localization department instead of just translators but as we all know they went out of control and focused more on "cultural adaptation" than everything else
The difference here is that it's like if YGO Abridged was literally your only option if you don't know Japanese.
bland boring forgettable drivel that barely qualifies as writing
soulful memorable lines full of personality
Stop being contrarian just for the sake of it.
imagine being such a fucking NPC moron you think you're living in a capitalist system, when everything is literally centrally planned by the federal government lmao
actually advertising your preggo fetish twitter account on Anon Babble
crazy
if it weren't for 4kids, yugioh/pokemon wouldnt be nearly as popular. the shows are "localized" but they still proved massively popular. this is the chicken jockey of 2004 btw
mate, even Adam Smith, father of capitalism, considered landlords parasites
Whining won't change anything anyway. EOPs will still only buy translated (or even worse, dubbed) products, wwhether it's localization, translation, or transliteration.
Just buy Japshit, learn babby N3 Jap, and throw LunaTranslator at it. Good enough for studying
You could've had a proper uncut dub if you fuckers bought the DVDs, the only reason it was shelved was due to low sales.
they're anti-establishment street punks
So they live in a half way house, suck dick for meth and do/say whatever the commie that shows up writing checks tells them to? Kinda makes sense honestly.
You can, you know, just step out of my house bro.
ygo and Pokemon were popular in Japan and Europe without the need of "jelly doughnuts"
I think there's a major, but deceptively subtle difference between removing foreign cultural norms (e.g. jelly donuts) and adding niche local cultural norms (e.g. capitalism is... le bad).
Localizers want to conflate localizing with their own creative writing and theres some people who want "quirky" or "punched-up" scripts, where as Japanese is more or less straightforward if not subtle.
Personally I like more straightforward translations. The fluff and "humor" localizers add to scripts is tiresome to read. I was reading a manga scanlation and enjoying it, then suddenly the next chapter became a tiresome slog to get through. I realized the translator changed for this chapter and it was one of those exasperating "punched-up" scripts and I had to just drop it. Thats when they aren't actively changing entire meanings.
they were more popular in USA. i mean the god damn yugioh movie was 100% commissioned by fucking 4kids. it wasn't even a JP original.
Localization can be useful to help conversations flow better, but it should never be at the cost of clarity and overall message of the conversation being localised.
Ultimately however, localizing has become some weird playground for coming up with the "most appropriate western equivalent" where trannylators all praise and circlejerk eachother for changing a line that they don't think fit western sensibilities.
The one example that always come to mind is the twittertranny praising xerself for thinking to use "fragile male ego" instead of "tsundere" and how good of a choice it was. Just completely detached from reality and their initial objective. Destroying the sentence's original meaning without even thinking about if they should.
Or obviously the maid dragon shit where the femc goes from dissing the fat titty dragon to calling out the patriarchy because the localizers couldn't help themselves.
I think the worst part though is the complete lack of trust that you're getting accurate reads of characters, and how the devs wanted to present their characters to you. I didn't buy the game to witness the creations of some fart sniffing translator.
they made joey into a brooklyn dude while they all still live in japan. everyone was alright with it because joey is based.
Is he right?
Usually they force their trash ideology on the translation, but on this particular one, it's actually congruent with the character and the context.
104 is a department store. She said " I don't like it" it implies she doesn't like what it represents.
The translation just made it more explicit.
I find the Paper Mario TTYD translation much more egregious, since it changed the tone of the game, made it less funny and turned a gag of "man dressed like woman" into a fucking trans-character.
Graffiti is inherently an anti capitalist art movement, Japanese don't get it
I wholeheartedly disagree. Pokemon/Yugioh/Etc are good IN SPITE of their localizations, not because of them. Localized anime cartoons were hard to sit through as a kid after I was saw actual subs.
For one, the music was actuslly music and not random clashing sounds and guitar stings. YGO GX had a good ost, the dub is just random instrument clashes.
Not more than in Japan, besides America had far more aggressive marketing.
Stop rewriting history and eat your hamburgers Apollo.
their dubs are what put them on the map and made their respective companies put far more investment and continuation in them. see
So did Jean Jaqcues Rousseau, it seems the greatest minds of the Enlightenment are ignored now
Yugioh TCG in america constantly outsold CCG in Japan. Same with Pokemon.
I skimmed it and saw reeing about gamergate so no, he's definitely wrong.
mfw graffiti in pompeii were against capitalism before it was even invented
How long ans how did you learn N3 baby jap? I just want to be able to watch children's anime and move up from there. Im like N5 or whatevers lowest and want to know what to do.
If translators are such great creative talents why don't they make something themselves?
You dont realize how pathetic you sound... turn on subs if you want uncut, dummy.
Thankfully GPT4.1 exists and is better than any danger hair
Because they are failed writers and the only way they can showcase their writing to the world is my vandalizing the work of people who are actually talented. The only reason their in the game localization industry is because they can barely understand japanese if at all, a lot of them use MTL to translate. The pay in the video game localization industry is shit so all of the professionals who are fluent in japanese are making real money translating business documents.
TTYD
Talking about the remaster or the game as a whole? I know they did remove some of the humor on the original localization, but Vivian has never been a trap nor a troon, just a normal girl.
To be fair I studied on/off so I'm not sure how long it took for me. If you're serious and have proper textbook and a teacher, you probably can pass it in less than 6 months. N3 is really not hard and still quite basic
You dont realize how pathetic you sound.
In comparison to people still complaining about 4Kids dubs in 2025?
you can't attribute that to the localization itself when kids have no choice in which they consume
america simply has a larger consumer base which causes it to lead these statistics almost by default
Reminder that these threads are made by one singular guy who is also an ESL and thus has no grounds to rate a localization.
Would N3 and a textractor or translation software be enough to play japanese vidya?
REMINDER
Immediately discard any talk about "1:1" or "literal". It is bad faith.
Also discard any arguments that base themselves on sales. Nobody here should be a marketer, and therefore sales should not matter to anyone making a point here.
No dummy. The characters, the art direction, the story and all that put them on the map. The clanging racket music and neutered tone is not what made kids like those shows. Are you fucking mad? The only peopel it MAYBE made happy was your pastor and soccer moms.
The dub voices for Pokemon and Yugioh are great castings, I'll admit that, but thats the only thing they got right.
Is this true or not?
It is, but translating in a non-literal way to capture the feeling of the original is much harder than literal translations. Your picrel is neither of those, it deliberately inserts information that wasn't there in the original. Honestly, I'd like to see more translations done by Japanese native speakers who learned English as a second language. They usually produce translations that are less idiomatic and "flow worse," but are more faithful to the original.
Depends but for most mainstream ones I'm sure you can. Just remember that you're probably going to pause often to reread stuff
Starting off with VNs or RPGs that are more static would be better for studying I think
Is "localization" actually needed in video games?
Maybe? It's used to sell games to non-english speakers too.
youtu.be
The english localization of the Tokyo Ghoul manga was done by a japanese guy in japan who speaks english and it had no issues.
This is so far from the truth its unreal. Anyway newer ygo anime stil got high ratings in Japan while America was stuck in an early 2000's nostalgia coma only caring about yugi and kaiba
Immediately discard any talk about "1:1" or "literal". It is bad faith.
Name one thing bad about machine translation over tumblr translations.
Wanting dubs in 2025 is pants shitting child retard tier nigger shit
The cards often have wordplay in the name that needs to get translated in some degree because it needs to fit on a card text to capture the original flavor.
Like changing "Entermate" to "Performapal" because the "Enter" section is based on a Japanese usage of "エンタメ" as a shorthand for the word "Entertainment" that isn't used in English, and "Mate" was just intended to mean "they're friends, buddies, pals" but "mate" can carry different connotations in English, especially.
Performapal gets the intent of the archetype name convention across but removes any ambiguity or things that might sound odd in English.
Or sometimes a TCG archetype is given a name change because not changing it would introduce unintended archetype members. The Weather in Japanese is just called "Weather" but the TCG added the "The" so that it didn't bring in cards like Weather Report or Weathering Soldier or Prank-Kids Weather Washer into the archetype (also known as "the Arsenal Summoner problem").
Also of note is whenever an archetype named with kanji gets announced and YGOrg tries to get all cute with it and make up their own ridiculous localization.
anti-establishment street punks
against communist then
The translation just made it more explicit.
There's a leap between "I don't like this the name of this one store being scribbled on here." vs. "I don't like capitalism."
I don't trust any retard who gets worked up over the stupidest shit imaginable like GamerGate. Having irrational whiney reactions like is a sign that your brain is full of preconceptions and biases, so the information given by such a person is useless and likely filtered through a hugbox.
Honestly I dont even think they flow worse. When they try to work in quirky ways of saying things to sound more "natural" it always gets tiresome to read and gets in the way
Reminder that a massively hyped deck that everyone was looking forward to couldn't be called M(upside down A)lice because of a joke 3 card "archetype" from the anime 12 years ago. Instead the localizers called it maliss.
Machine translation tools constantly get things wrong. People who don't know Japanese and whose only way of checking translations is with MTL shouldn't participate in this conversation.
Most kids that were watching these dubs back then didn't give a fuck about how it was presented, they still enjoyed it. Of course when you get introduced to the world of subs, it obviously becomes clear that you missed out on shit in shows like Yugioh.
The whole 4kids stuff is pretty interesting when you look back on it now, especially when you take a look at older Youtube and forum posts about them. The amount of people being extremely overdramatic about them and genuinely thinking they went out of their way to do shit dubs is funny too. It's not like they purposely wanted to create the shittiest dub of One Piece in existence. They got it as apart of a package deal, which means they were quite literally forced to shit out a TV-Y version somehow.
MTL translations are still going to be more faithful and accurate than the shit localizers do.
So true my fellow illiterate trans woman
the company bought the distribution rights and were the ONLY means for anyone to watch it in the west
that means the quality is good!
oh shut the fuck up you massive retard
How does 104 correlate to capitalism?
retarded revisionist tranny
I can tell you believed localizer trannies' lies in that they """""saved""""" Ghost Stories too, despite it mogging Pokemon when it aired.
patriarchal society demands
ESL here, what does that even mean?
The problem is that they just cant help themselves.
They love nothing more than to pretend they are the ones who wrote or created it, and so the spergs rewrite or add shit to "leave their mark".
Man learning Japanese is daunting ever since some guy on here pointed out that all the Japanese dictionaries are poisoned by fags who don't know Japanese or who are actively malicious.
Not always, I remember how MTL completely missed the おっぱじめる innuendo in the Hundred Line thread.
Ghost Stories dub is funny though
dude if they achushally called them onigiri instead of jelly donuts the west would be saved
Social demands expected in a patriarchal society
For example (exaggerated), a woman having to do all the work around the house and making dinner for everybody without an alternative of doing something else
That's just one instance. The MTL in this first image is more accurate/faithful than the localization and the MTL in the second image said "Alright! This is where the real thing begins! I'm gonna eat like crazy with everything I've got!" which is more accurate and faithful that the spongebob meme they used in the official localization
dude if they achushally called them plain clothes instead of patriarchal chud gamergate toxic male gaze standards the west would be saved
Just use Japanese -> English or Japanese -> Japanese dictionaries edited by Japanese people. Also, a huge chunk of what that anon talked about were words that only come up in high prose, ones that you won't really see in pop culture content.
Not really, it reminds me when MST3K was big and every other annoying nerd thought he was a wise-cracking adlib clown talking over everything
I think he means that by westernising character names and stuff helped the franchise a lot.
After defeating The Rocket Gang Muzashi and Koujiro our heroes Satoshi, Kazumi and Takeshi head to Mazara village to visit Professor Yukinari
Yeah, I don't see Pokemon being as popular in the west if it were like that.
If the difference between wood and lumber doesn't show up in anything but high prose then I'll wonder what the fuck those nips are smoking.
How do you guys claim the MTL is more accurate when you are relying on the MTL and don't speak the language in the first place?
What's wrong here? I think that adds some flavor while keeping the same context intact. I do hate when they go out of the way to include memes like the Zelda from the 3DS having a doge meme.
they became popular *despite* their subpar localizations, certainly not because of them.
It really isn't, thanks for telling us that you're forever a stunted child mentally.
retarded tranny strawman
Shocker
104 (or the IRL equivalent, 109, anyways) is literally the center of the Japanese anti-capitalism/consumerism movement. An anti-109/104 stance is implicitly understood to be anticapitalist/consumerist in nature.
Not only that, but the character saying that is setting up for a joke later— she's introduced as a rebellious anti-104 graffiti artist, then later you find out she's a silver spoon rich girl with a grandma who made her fortune in fashion off of some drawings she made as a kid. Making sure the audience understands the cultural implications of being against 104/109 is integral to the joke, so for a western audience they added a little extra to make the cultural implication clear.
Anon Babbletroon can't help but continue to project
I think I will use my trusty frying pan as a drying pan.
Anyone complaining about translations is really just complaining that they're too stupid to learn Japanese
the faggot acting high and mighty over anime dub discussion giving anyone lip about being a child
Still, Naruto and DBZ fared well even in the US.
It's hard to think of a single instance where the difference could influence anything outside of technical materials. All lumber is wood, just not all wood is lumber. In fact, my language only has a single word for both.
104 is supposed to sound like Wonderful
HOLY MOLY I'M HAVING A BRAIN BLAST WITH MY MASSIVE GALAXY BRAIN (TUMOR MODE)
Wasn't Vivian an effeminate boy?
104th reply in the thread btw.
Yet dragonball characters are mostly known by their names and beloved for them. Id bet anything localizing agencies fought to change them but lost. Maybe it helped but pokemon wasnt aided 99% of the other shit localized 4kids anime do
I can't believe we're at the point Anon Babbletards are aguing that 4kids is good. Contrarianism has gone too far, lol
The japanese version outright says that Vivian is just a cross dresser, it's doesn't just hint at it, it makes it abundantly clear.
dodges and shits pants
Also ESLtard it's not dubs it's localization in general, get that third world reading comprehension checked and also go back to shitter.
Zelda from the 3DS having a doge meme.
No, that meme is not that old... right?
accuses others of having thirdie reading comprehension when he mass replies with niggerbabble
KWAB
I am an activist and super important online
the far right are behind all this
The devil is the church's greatest shill; not hell's. These people that think themselves virtuous are ironically so self servicing they have a visceral reaction to matters or fact on gamergate and God forbid you post a timeline styled breakdown of who fucked who as well as how the web of artificial influence/shilling games nobody outside of their inner circle wanted. Morally bankrupt backpatters.
Dude people weren't tuning in to see if Brock would pull another jelly donut bit, these jokes only became popular a decade after they aired when they realized how fucking goofy these changes were.
Do you mean A Link Between Worlds? That was only in the American version, the european release was faithful because the game got two english localizations oddly enough (One by NoA and one by NoE)
Prove it.
is AI going to fix this?
I bet the trannyslator that added that shit about capitalism freaked out when Trump announced tariffs! NO YOU CAN'T JUST KNOCK OUT WALL STREET! ORANGE MAN BAD!!!1
Every day, I pray that MTL massively improves and can actually put these fuckers out of a job. Sadly, they’ll probably use MTL and then still hire these fuckers to make sure that it’s ‘properly’ done.
Google translate does a better job than localizers at this point
AI sped up protein folding by a factor of 168 times over, taking the preliminary process of finding viability for producing a medicine from taking months to taking no more than a day or two.
It's over for translators the moment serious hardware gets pointed their way with the goal of making people more readily able to communicate with eachother across culture and without needing to learn another language. Anime, vidya and games may not be the focus but they are the byproducts that will benefit.
Localization isn't inherently bad
Pokemon is a good example, imagine if the Legendary Birds kept their Japanese names
Hell, localization works both ways
It can be necessary. Not many people like 1:1 dry translations that have a bunch of in jokes that only Japanese or hardcore weebs can get.
The changes just need to make sense and still capture the original point of the scene being localised
Every day, I pray that every EOP gets shot in the head for supporting these parasites. I can't hate the trannies, they are simply doing what is in their nature, like the scorpion and the frog. The problem is the frog who is willing to carry them across the lake, and that frog is YOU.
Now you'll tell me all about how you pirate all your CR trannylations and video games, so you're not to blame! You're still the target market, freak.
Panty & Stocking is a good example of this/a good dub. If you watch subs, a lot of the world play will be lost on you and if the localization/translation was shittily done you'd not catch them in the dub either.
Wood is what something is made of or basically just some hunks of tree. Lumber is specifically the processed and ready to use building material.
It's fine and dandy if your language only has one word for it, but this is the difference between saying there's tree stumps and branches sitting in a room or a bunch of planks.
We have an AI translated and dubbed anime.
It's not good.
x.com
this is why you learn the language and dont give a single cent to the people hiring those retards
Claude translates while considering all nuance, jokes, etc. It will recognize that something was a reference to an internet meme of 2009, but the equivalent term might not fit in this sentence so it will insert a slightly dated Western meme a few sentences later. Claude will also explain what it did.
in short, full spectrum translation is solved.
If you said "there was a lot of wood in the room", most people would assume furniture or lumber. Almost nobody would think the room is filled with tree stumps and branches.
dubtranny so insecure he thought others were mocking him directly and felt the need to chime in
so bootyblasted not giving (You)s but still reading posts, showing we live in his head rent free
KEK
Here's a 5ch post:
理解できてないだろ
その「車輌を最大限に引き出してる写真」が所詮「カタログ写真」でしかないが
言われた通りにやれば子供でもできるし
そしてそんな誰でも一緒のものをなんであんな躍起になって撮りたがるの
というのが撮り鉄がバカにされてるところ
好みが違うということじゃない
わかるかな
is it more accurate to translate it as:
You don't understand
The "photos that bring out the best in the vehicle" are nothing more than "catalog photos"
Even a child can do it if they follow the instructions
And why are people so eager to take photos of something that everyone can take
That's why train photographers are being made fun of
It's not that our tastes are different
Do you understand?
(Google Translate)
or
You don’t get it, do you?
Those "perfect train shots" you guys cream yourselves over? They’re just catalog photos.
Literally anyone could take them if they follow the instructions—hell, a kid could do it.
And yet you autists go full feral trying to snap the exact same shot as everyone else.
That’s why railfans get mocked.
It’s not about "different tastes" or whatever cope you’re cooking up.
Understand that, at least.
(ChatGPT instructed to translate in the style of a Anon Babble post)
It’s not 2020 anymore, DeepL is terrible nowadays. Claude and Grok will not fail to reinsert fitting wordplay.
By comparison to this (representative of all dubs by the way) it might as well be a 10/10 performance.
he's so mad that he's literally red-faced with steam coming out of his ears
JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEJ
There is fundamentally no difference between watching something with Japanese audio or no dialog if you're just reading subs anyway
Now we're just getting into bad faith arguments here. The point is that there is a difference. And this difference serves a mechanical purpose. There is absolutely no reason to use a generic form of "wood" when they specifically use "lumber". Because the word "lumber" exists. Do you get it?
Don’t use ChatGPT. It’s terrible, but more than that they try to make it sound like a soulless search engine that sounds like a book/robotic assistant deliberately
Localize THIS
lie out of indignation and hatred
get called retarded by a few people
"L-LOL I TROLLED U ALL!"
Holy meltdown
I do not want californian "flavor".
Weebs have comprehension of the audio at like 10-30%.
Don’t use ChatGPT
well i'm trying to quickly make a point here, i know chatgpt isn't as reliable for translations as something like google translate
mind you in my experience it doesn't sound like a robotic assistant if you tell it to write like Anon Babble, in fact it starts going on about autists and schizos and sometimes starts calling people fags
There are plenty of people who would use wood when lumber would be more accurate.
Anyway, there's not much point arguing this with you because you're a mentally ill retard who actually falls for schizoposting and thinks that every resource is "out to get him" by translating "pebbles" as "rocks", rendering you completely impotent and incapable of expressing yourself or reading anything.
So Vivian has always been canonically trans? She straight up calls herself a sister, even when everyone says she's a he.
what? this has to be one of the most retarded things i've read on Anon Babble and that's worthy of a medal
it's all about the sound of the voices, their intonations, the way they speak and how they sound
It sounds unnatural and faggy as fuck. Especially in Jap media.
I need flavor!
Media shouldn't cater to those with ADHD who clap like retarded seals, let alone the leftist tranny freaks that dialogue in that pic is obviously aimed at.
I don't like marvelslop dialogue.
...and by a "few people" i mean me and my phone
the bo-bobo dub does pretty well at carrying the humor, but it's probably easier there given that it's mostly absurdist humor, so bo-bobo signing his name in japanese and then saying "wait, i can't read this, it's all squiggles!" fits the tone but wouldn't really pass in other series
No, Vivian was Otokonoko (crossdresser) in the japanese version.
Wrong. It would have been popular either way because it was a kickass fucking anime.
If anything it got popular IN SPITE of the terrible translating.
How do I know? Because it got popular all over the world with varying degrees of accurate translation. It was just that good.
so let's make them talk like 40 year old terminally online twitterites, that'll show em
should they also make a RATM reference too?
Based localization clarifying the message to dumb americans who would miss more subtle messages.
names are changed obviously (dark magician girl sounds cooler than black magician girl) but the card text is literal for rules sake.
All of which you'll be ignoring while you read. Hearing a Japanese person blurt out some moon runes is no different than you assigning a voice to the dialog in your head while you read.
returning to the planet is a common phrase in FF7 and the remake
im several instances the localisation team saw fit to replace this term with "homecoming" for no fucking reason
Explain the context very briefly, say precisely ”this is from an anime style game but I don’t want you to overvalue this fact” and pass that text to Claude. post results.
Every time there's a hundred line thread all I hear about are these fucking localizations, how deep does this rabbit hole go?
You're the retard trying to argue about how to translate things to English while making arguments like, "Well my language doesn't have different words for shit or food, it's all the same thing to me." The people who wouldn't care to make this distinction are working on a deadline, don't care, or are simply so stupid as to think it doesn't matter.
I'll drop it then if you're such a fucking crybaby that this argument is making you ragequit. I don't see what's fucking mentally ill about calling something "juice" even if it's a "drink" or a "boulder" when it's a "rock". Different words exist for a reason you fucking pissant.
I bet your name comes up in whatever shit language you speak as "cuckold".
I really think you're retarded and I don't mean it as the usual insult, I mean it like you probably have a sub-80 IQ and you believe everyone is like you, because what you're saying is too stupid even to be trolling
A character saying something strange and stilted at least keeps you grounded in the rest of the strange and stilted dialogue instead of them outright saying *dated internet meme*.
Picture trying to play this game ten years from now and being bombarded with memes from a cartoon show that's going to be as old as Scooby Doo was when you watched that cartoon.
Hot take, but as a big fan of the manga specifically 4kids' censorship of yugioh was probably necessary for it to be successful in the anglosphere. At a time when innocuous shit like Pokemon was fouling the second satanic panic, they somehow managed to slip through a series legitimately based on occultism. Pre-Death T, Dark Yugi was legitimately characterised as a devilish figure in the same vein as The Laughing Salesman.
Same thing.
We are just adding context because Japanese as a language loves to drop subjects/objects from sentences because it is heavily context based, or making the sentence flow better in English
That would be fine if that's all they did, but they make up entire character arcs and traits out of nowhere for no good reason.
Total Localizer Death.
They are opportunistic propagandists masquerading as innocuous translators.
Most crossdressers don't pretend to be actually female though, if anything they lean into the "I'm actually a guy" thing. I guess it's more nuanced than I thought.
To be fair adapting the Shadow Realm thing to canon because that sounds way more fucked up than death was an incredibly based thing to do and something we should appreciate the dub for doing.
I'm not that guy, I jumped in to point out that your understanding of "lumber" is flawed. If you asked someone to go to the store and buy you some wood, how many do you think would come back with tree branches and stumps? There are plenty of words you could use this argument for, but wood and lumber is tenuous at best.
I apologise if you're not the retard crying about how genki is trying to trick him, I just followed the chain up and figured you were the first guy.
I don't know anon, I don't think localizers from other countries are as bad as american localizers.
Fuckers ARE the establishment. How many layers of mental gymnastics do we have to go through for people to come to this conclusion?
Hmm, I'm not an underground scene. I'm not being punished for my speech. I'm being praised in every single facet of my life, while my political opponents are drawn through the mud and in many cases have the police brought to their door. Yup, anti-establishment, feels good to be going after the big guy
Like seriously fuckers, be careful, because once the government actually topples and people with serious differing views from you stroll up, the ones that made the coup possible are always the first to go.
I just don't think you realise how much of the dialog you're actively ignoring. At best you'll get a feel for who is speaking, and whether their general emotional state (happy, sad, angry, etc.). All of this is also evident based on the subs, so there is no functional difference between the two
HOW DARE YOU NOT USE FFMPEG TO COMPRESS YOUR DOT GIFS THIS IS A FUCKING GENOCIDARINO!
stop replying to me you retard
Activists are trying to cloud the meaning of "localization" to rid it of its stigma, since localization is nothing more than a marketing strategy and therefore something that people consider to have no artistic value.
Localization is the alteration of the original work so that the end result is more familiar to the new consumer market. It has NOTHING to do with translation. Localization happens when in a product made in Spain, for example, a phrase like “yesterday I watched La Coruña play” is replaced by “yesterday I watched the Lakers play” or some shit like that.
Activists want to pretend that localization is actually part of the translation process because they want to have a reason to proselytize ideologically. It's as simple as that.
How bad is this problem with other languages? I noticed a sub of a french film as I was channel surfing that got all of it wrong to the point where the film no longer made sense if you were just reading the subs.
You know I'm right
No that's not proper localization, that's mangling the original.
Proper localization is like in The Brothers Karamazov, a Russian saying like "beating the air" is localized as "chasing windmills." And it's actually very hard to pull off, to the point you can recognize the good translators because they keep as much as possible intact, while also localizing what needs to be localized. It's also why particularly good translations reach almost mythical status, with a lot of people insisting on one particular translation of some foreign work to be the only one worth reading
WOWWEEE IM FIGHTING LE EVIL MONEY PEOPLE BY WORKING ON A NEEDLESS CONSUMER PRODUCT
Based localizers ruining everything for EOPs.
they're anti-establishment street punks
sure lol
Not reading all that. But no, he ain't right
Street punks from the mind of a Japanese person are not equivalent to danger hair redditors in the west, nor do they talk like them. Dishonest.
As a former street punk myself, I agree with they/them
If the game is mainstream than yeah or normies will flip
Proper otaku games are made for people who want to know more about Japanese culture and should be as 1:1 with the OG text as possible
So remove culture altogether?
Art is and has always been mostly created by the left.
replies with a Gayboy Queerbop gif
HOLY. FUARK.
I was never able to tell why she said this. It's just graffiti, there's no other way to read this other than "the localizer doesn't like capitalism and snuck this shit in here for no reason"
i goku burgered your sister last night?
play weeb shit because I want to immerse myself in weeb culture
trannyslator decides to hamfist american pop cultural quips and references into the dialogue
what's the easiest way to learn Japanese? I'm better with hands on so something like watching YouTube videos isn't going to work for me.
Crying about how genki is trying to trick him
You're really as bad as the guy who doesn't even speak English in this case. Why does this specific point make you so fucking angry as to discard everything as schizo babble? Why genki specifically, when I didn't bring up anything in particular and actually mentioned I'm just some guy who saw another guy say some thing? Take a fucking breath or something.
Anyways, my answer is really simple. You're right. You're absolutely right. Using context, you can say just about anything you want. And I don't have to construct some stupid scenario where this isn't true because lumber is wood.
But this is a completely bad faith argument and a misunderstanding of what's being talked about. I don't really see what your point is. What you get out of this. I dunno why you're pissing all over your booties as if I won't accept this.
Lumber is its own word. And it's a word that apparently Japanese and English easily share. And it just seems ridiculous to me that people would generalize and glaze over things for seemingly no reason when it's not a word that is untranslatable or related to some obscure idiom.
I'm entirely uninterested in trying to convince you somehow that wood is not lumber or that the words are not interchangeable in context because this is not what's being talked about here.
I don't know why you want to make this specific autism your personal matyrdom, dying on the cross for someone who would be too lazy to know the difference between corpse and cadaver.
What's wrong here
Let me explain it
Play Japanese game in Japanese
Only need to know about Japanese culture and MAYBE some parts of larger western pop culture that may as well be on an international level(Sherlock Holmes for instance)
Play the same game but now "localized into English;
Japanese culture predominantly removed
Need to know about San Francisco culture
obscure western sitcoms no one watched or remembers aside from the localizer and it's Tumblr clique
Discord child grooming server terminology
dated memes that were never funny since they were from Tumblr and had no edge or staying power
random faggotry from the circlejerking sites the localizer obsessively uses
western sociopolitical bullshit that has nothing to do with the game
This isn't flavor. It's shit and gay.
What you've mentioned doesn't need a special name, it's still a translation. Idiomatic expressions have meanings that go beyond the meaning of the individual words, so the translator exchanges them for equivalent expressions. Translation is exactly that, it's not swapping words for their equivalents, it's rewriting a text in a new language so that the meaning remains as close to the original as possible (which isn't always possible, by the way).
Localization is 100% a marketing strategy, so nobody respects it.
A society led by men. In context of the localization, Lucoa felt she needed to wear a sweater to hide her breasts & buttocks (conservative attire expected by men).
In the original she got mad at her for how slutty she looked and how little she was wearing.
In the dub she instead makes fun of society for treating women that way, she says a bunch of buzzwords along related to this.
You don't get it Anon. All western releases MUST mention prom. PROM IS GOD to the localizer and western writer. IT'S PROM.
Localization helps avoid the inconvenience of adding translators' notes in the middle of gameplay and cutscenes. It's the real grifters who don't appreciate it.
inconvenience
Inconvenience whom?
It adds the context for why she is mad since in japanese they understand why a picture of a mall telling you to go there would get tagged over. The npcs entire character is being a fake culturewar hipster doing graffiti as a way to be an attentionwhore while pretending to fight for something.
street punks
Why didnt they call each other nigga?
The only "localization" ever needed is wordplay.
Nah bro.
You can definitely translate japanese to english 1:1 despite japanese
-not having any spaces or punctuation
-mentioning the topic as well as the subject (topic doesn't exist in english sentences)
-having a completely different word order to english
-having completely different phrasing to english
-not having the "double negative" rule
-not having definite or indefinite articles
-leaving out the majority of information because the reader is supposed to understand via context
-using words that literally don't exist in english
-words having completely different meanings and usages compared to the same words in english
trust me bro
Aren't both wrong? Graffiti is literally written there in katakana and neither version actually contains that word.
But it's right there.
*and i forgot the best one
Japanese words have multiple meanings, often contradictory, and the meaning changes depending on what verb or particle is in the sentence, and you don't know what the verb is because the verb goes last
No idea about Japanese, but it surely is needed in Russian.
Unfortunately, most Russian translators don't do a proper adaptation, which makes a lot of dialogue sound like Google Translate and just like shit no one who's actually Russian would ever, ever say (translating idioms literally is an easy example, but there are many much subtler things about the proper usage of a spoken language).
Sometimes even an unnatural word order is kept, which just makes everything read like a word-for-word transcript from an alien language. I remember catching Sonic Boom in Russian early in the morning on a kids' channel, and I basically felt like I was watching some alien show. The words and the grammar were there, but I couldn't understand a single thing they were actually saying. Catching this on TV as kid must be some sort of mind poison.
This issue is prevalent not only in video games, but other fields as well.
There is even a whole "translated Russian lingo", which is basically words and phrases retarded movie translators came up with back in the 70-80s because they weren't too good at their job, but that somehow wormed their way into the language (ironically, almost nobody talks like that in real life still, but you can still hear these cliches in movies sometimes).
I assume Japanese and English are even more different to the point where such changed would be warranted.
We're talking about human languages.
Learning Japanese is impossible, so I have no clue.
The majority of Jap speech is not figurative or colorful, the only time you see kanji read as: "ASS RAPE DARKNESS" with a completely different kana reading "Flying Crimson Lotus" attached is pretty rare for most series. It's pretty fucking straightforward nigga, since really only battle shounen or parodies of it do that on the regular. School kids making small talk or characters purchasing something at a store will never see that kind of dialogue.
There is NOT 390,154 different ways to interpret "今日はとても暑い". Again, going from those examples of small talk and the like.
You faggot defenders of localization don't get to simultaneously claim that "Japanese is a dry, emotionless, robotic language and thus needs to Have Color and Spice Added™ hyukhyukhyuk" while then saying "IT'S A MYSTERIOUS ALIEN LANGUAGE BASED PURELY OFF OF VAGUE FEELINGS AND INTENT". You are contradicting yourselves constantly.
I thought asians were insects? My bad then.
Japanese sounds more human than some dog-raping incoherent babble spoken by turko-finnish hybrids called Russians, yeah.
"今日はとても暑い"
Japs don't talk like this
it's another meltie thread about localizers
Neither do they talk like "UGHHH it's so stinkin' hot out today, damn you global warming caused by incels!".
he thinks the praise for dub kaiba (or any 4kids dub) is out of sincerity and not irony born from childhood nostalgia
Anti establishment
Using communist rhetoric
I'm fine with localizations most of the time as even at the worst they *tend* to be they're usually just a little cringe. I also understand the desire to spice up some Japanese text as subtle differences in things like, for example how a character refers to themselves or others (Boku, Ore...Watashi, Atashi, Watakushi...), Kansai dialiect...etc. don't really have direct analogs in every language so some fuckery is needed to get the point across sometimes.
I tend to prefer fan-driven localizations but large language models have made people lazy in that regard.
Holy shit though, some of this shit is impossible to defend though. I'm getting tired of localizers trying to assert their own perspectives in another person's work.
it's another ESL tourist defending trannylators
if that were true localizers wouldn't have to forcefully wokify the dialogue because the original writer wasn't as deranged as them
Art is owned by a particular political persuasion it is impossible for you to learn
Indian take
I wouldn't consider people left-of-center to be "leftoids" in this regard anyways.
He says as media more than 10 years old get trigger warnings
tick tock lolcowlizers.
asks for examples of localizers butchering manga
is given 20 examples
T-THOSE DON'T COUNT! BLOCKED!
AI is a grift, and AI slop translation will not be tolerated.
The sooner you realize ideologically captured woketrannies are not looking for good faith discussion, the better. They will only ever task you with running around and doing stunts for them so they can dismiss all your efforts at the end.
Instead of making every intellectual concession possible while they give you none you should just call them slurs instead.
The number of replies that think this is describing the localizer and not the character being localized is hilarious to me
What game is this
Grok has been surprisingly helpful every time I'm stumped while learning nip. Just describe the context of the situation and give it the sentence and the word you're interested in and it explains it pretty well.
Honestly companies should just use ChatGPT or other AIs to translate video game scripts. Sure AI can't capture all the nuance but it'll still be ten times better than the garbage localizers have been giving people for the past several decades.
Companies will also save money not having to hire activists so there is an incentive to do it too
Cope. The Japanese are going to cut out the middle man (western localization companies) and use AI to translate manga and games in-house and save money.
calm down please
Colonizing is not bad, but the same people saying "colonizing bad fuck drumpf" are the ones culturally colonizing japanese media to force their American views on unsuspecting customers all around the world
We should start a website cataloguing shitty localizers and their works, so consumers can avoid any future piece of media that involves them
Funny how I never see complains when games has localization of Japan language to Spanish, Portuguese, British English, or Chinese (traditional and simplified )
The problem only exist in American English.
You're the one that's mad though
Art is and has always been mostly created by the left.
has done nothing but stagnated over the years after the so called left took over
lol
lmao even
is this a bot thread?
That dub were shelved because 4Kids were being shady cunts and colluded with Funimation without TV Tokyo's approval
Ghost Stories was in the top 10 for some weeks, but it never mogged Pokemon, like ever.
I feel like DBZ Abridged really is this because regular DBZ isn't as readily accessible in much of the Anglosphere and has a really shitty dub.
There is still art being made chud. Just because you discovered it's mostly made by people who hold opinions different from yours doesn't change that fact.
Outrage over localization in the latest new thing is known to be part of an anti-woke grift.
woke localizer ruins anime!
woke translators are finished!
Ah yes, the western mind could totally not handle the concept of rice and seaweed.
a leftist 100 years ago =/= the commies of today who are championing grooming and open borders and doing that in vidya translations too
they would be considered nazis today you dumb nigger
obviously an author from 200 years ago disagreeing with slavery (disregard his regular use of slurs that's inconvenient for my agenda here) means he would totally agree with me and my xisters turning little Jimmy into Jannette!
what the fuck are you insinuating about chud?!
They were trading blows in ratings and for something that came out of nowhere that's definitely a mogging especially at the height of pokemon's popularity.
Japanese has a lot of speech patterns that can't be directly translated to English, so translators need to add additional flavor to a script that would otherwise come off as dry or artificial.
I'm so glad this game bombed.
You get what you fucking deserve.
"okay guys lets do this" - japanese
"six year old trans kids are hecking valid" - english localization
That's some flavor alright.
Dishonest tranny dogma already deconstructed here The majority of natural sounding speech in general is "dry". Small talk or interacting with people in a business is not equivalent to how capeshit characters talk to each other, you would rightfully be called an obnoxious faggot if you talked like this in real life and that obnoxious faggotry translates to fiction as well, triply so if the original canon dialogue is pretty chill.
Then why didn't they write that in the original? Also street punks don't say that. Maybe redditors do.
Total Localizer Death
My favorite JRPG series will never get translated but I guess escaping a poor localization isn't too bad...
Anon Babble thinks every third line in localized games is about trans people
It’s hilarious how needlessly outraged you are.
Ai translations are a genuine improvement and these fucks dont deserve to have jobs
Damn that tranny is upset, Anon Babble is spot on yet again.
If all trannylators suddenly disappeared, which segment of society would suffer?
The worst media companies you know would suffer, which would be a massive net positive for society.
Almost as if the localizer projected their own beliefs onto the character.
Most people complaining about translations don't play games.
resist capitalism by buying my game!
anti-establishment street punks
with the opinion on everything as blackrock
no you dont get it we need to change the rice ball into a jelly donut and mention trump and gamergate for some reason
j-just one word
j-just one line
j-just one scene
j-just one game
j-just one series
There I got all the trannylator handwaving out of the way before some subhuman did it to you. No need to thank me.
Have you started learning moonrunes anon?
yugioh/pokemon wouldnt be nearly as popular
and I should care why? I'm not a greedy capitalist jew
i dont know who that is and i dont care, but you and him and go fuck yourselves for all i care, just do it somewhere else, stupid faggot
Hold your horses, Arthur Fonzarelli, you got a stick up your ass or are you one of those gamergate creepshows?
No because Japanese games are being pozzed at the source.

Localizer arrested for sending sex toys to a 13 year old boy
I think that adds some flavor
yeah, the flavor of shit maybe. i dont want your shitty and unfunny jokes, how hard is that to get? i want to read the original script of the author, not yours, you and your peers will never br writers of anything relevant, and thats is for a good reason, cant wait for ai to replace you
these tranny creatures are so snide and bad faith
that's the idea, why they're so passionately shillng SV techfag AI slop generators spammed by the pajeet hordes to demoralize and replace actual human artists.
leftist ruin everything
Do you ever wish that YOU could control the narrative of localization?
literally
Oh you hate localizers? Name every video game
Realistically, with how quickly AI is advancing, how long do you think it'll be before human localizers get replaced en masse?
Yeah, it should be, "What is this graffiti?"
The rest looks okay. idk
Is this true or not?
If you can't intuit the answer yourself in 2025 then im sorry to say you have room temperature iq.
Trannylators must die
Localization is like ordering a meal and then having the waiter pick things off of it because they don't like it.
all these seething chuddies
Lmao
If accurate translation is very easy, why haven't you gotten into the industry, hmm?
Holy based, going to have to follow these.
I'm sure this shocked everyone
Media is full of tranny cliques and if you don't drink the koolaid you aren't allowed in.
And the reason localization needs to be illegal and make 100% accurate translations mandatory.
The Japanese need to tell those assholes to fuck off.
I use dubs even if I know they're bad
It's like the old PE joke
if you can't write you become a translator
if you can't translate you become a localizer
