Can someone who loves the game, or at least understands the scene intention, explain to me why Ellie singing Take On Me is an Iconic Moment™? I saw the scene in 2020 and thought it was whatever, and seeing it adapted has me genuinely confused.

there's no way the context doesn't change, because yeah Ellie was being an insane murderhobo but there is no reason why that women isn't saying "hey I'm pregnant" other than for the scene to end the way it does.

The episode is called "Day One", isn't it? Or was that just my pirate release?

It's not strictly an essential scene (it's completely optional and easily missable in the game), but it's touching. It's a rare moment of calm and warmth, a delightful thing to just stumble upon while exploring for supplies. It's a fairly sad and downbeat cover of the song, but compared to the very grim overall atmosphere of the game it feels positive and hopeful. Ashley Johnson nails that balance with her singing.
It's also a nice surprise that she actually plays the entire song uninterrupted. You keep expecting it to be cut short or ruined in some way, but for once she gets to enjoy something in full.
(Although the game version does have an extra layer to that: She starts to play Future Days, then stops when Dina comes to watch and plays Take On Me instead. She repeatedly tries to play Future Days throughout the game, but never manages to get past a few lines.)

The TV version isn't as good and I'm not sure it needed to be there, although there would've probably been fan uproar if it hadn't been.

Somehow even worse than the actual game.

The game is the best of its generation and a serious contender for best game ever made. It was virtually guaranteed that the show would fail to live up to it and I was prepared for that.
I'm still disappointed that they barely seem to be even trying to match the overall tone/vibe though.

The game is literally Christian though. The first was miserycore and ends on a bleak, hopeless note. Part 2 introduces forgiveness to the setting. It's sad but a path to happiness is there, though Ellie nearly misses it until she spares Abby in the end.
If there was a Satanic aspect or character it would be Seth, the "bigot sandwich" man in the game. He goes out of his way to assist decry forgiveness in the show, advocating for vengeance before the town and giving her an opportunity for Ellie to voice her own opinion. That night he helps them smuggle their horse out and even gives Ellie his rifle to facilitate her revenge. It's like a dark hero's journey; a man motivated entirely by hate acting as a mentor, giving her the tools she'll damn herself with.

So could they not find someone with a gigantic nose to play Dina like they couldn't find a shit brickhouse to play Abby?

It seems like people are pretending to like modern shows that aren't all that great. Severance, tlou, stranger things. I've given them all a chance and they don't hold my interest or seem well written, but I watch some old show like Frasier or Beverly hills 90210 and it's like Shakespeare by comparison to modern stuff
