I will forever hate what this little nigger did to 2D indie games. Every Metroidvania plays follow-the-leader with Hollow Knight who already took from games 20+ years older than it. Do game devs not know how to innovate 2D platformers?

pitch your innovative 2D platformer concept.
Go on, I'll wait...

swimming levels only

triple jump and double dash

Hollow-likes are a thing now.

muh innovation

Why would you blame a game for the trendchasers that come after it?

Double Dash has already been made, idiot, it's my favorite kart racer.

animal well was pretty unique and nothing like hollow knight

game is good

everyone copies it

WOOOOOOOOOOOOW

I get what you mean OP. In particular I hate how Ori 2 was blatantly changed to follow Hollow Knight.

But ori 2 was an improvement in every way

I only played the first. What changed?
Was it longer? The first seemed hella short (honestly, I didn't see the end coming. Figured I would have a final confrontation at the big tree)..

they just added a badge system and a real time healing mechanic

I don't know why hollow knight provoke this kind of autism when for ex ori 2 also lifts a lot of gamedesign elements from retro studios dkc games but no one seems to mind

Did you play Cave Story?

platformer based around resource management. running out of lives (or power ups) is actually a thing, and the levels have a bunch of weird secrets that you kind of need to be on the look out for just to not game over, rather than as mere checkboxes.
i feel like this is basically how every platformer worked back in the day but now they're all either celeste/super meat boy clones where you're given a clean slate every level and it's all about finding and executing the developer's vision exactly as planned, or they're like kirby and the entire game revolves around collecting crappy little "secrets" designed for babies to figure out with no purpose other than making your completion counter go up

It really wasn't. I found the combat in Ori 2 to be completely unneeded.

suddenly every single Metroidvania has to g o apeshit with "everything is spikes" level design

imagine thinking about any of that shit, let alone seething at it like a bitch lol lmao

What i absolutely despise about HK becoming mainstream is popularization of charms. Now instead of getting all permanent upgrades, you can only use like a fourth of them. Fucking puke inducing.

Just wanted to say Ori 2's soundtrack is amazing, really relaxing to just let play during the day,

I just want Dash jumps back. Fucking 0 metroidvania's have megaman style dash jumps and its a crime.

Innovation is a contrarian buzzword because of posters like you. You act like a woman who expects her man to know what she wants even though she herself doesn't, and what she wants isn't even realistically feasible.

I like the simplification of the rpg system through charms but yeah I don't like the charm limit itself.

I mean castlevania games were already like that

Silksongbros... how we feeling?

Gave up on it and not even going to pirate it anymore. The trailers don't even look as good as Nine Sols at this point, and all the kewl skills seem like gimmicky bloat with little to no practical application.
Not bait, actually disillusioned. Might end up good, but Hollow Knight was at most competent. And I'm not impressed with competent metroidvanias anymore.

pretty sneedful to be honest

HopeCHADS won bigly

Wasn't it confirmed coming out later this year?

Ecco the dolphin did it tears ago

Huh? Post a game that is like hollow knight, because as far as I can tell, 90% of all metroidvanias draw inspiration from castlevania.

castlevania

Metroid.

metroid

Aside of axiom verge 1 and environmental station alpha, there are no metroidvanias inspired by metroid.

i tried playing nine sols and i gave up after 30 minutes of unskippable dialog that can't be FFd like in VNs

They're all Metroid-likes.

How so?
Do they all have leveling these days? Wasn't that Castlevania's main contribution?

Shallow knight

Innovative

Pick one

you are an enormous retard

Only in the genre title, for all intents and purposes, they are SotN-likes.
Castlevania's main contribution weren't just RPG stats but rather the overall style and gameplay which in most cases is melee focused like in castlevania, dark souls then got its filthy staple mechanics mixed into the genre, overriding the little "metroid" side a metroidvania could have.

I hereby propose that metroidvanias should be called Darkvanias or Castlesouls now.

Personal insults are a cope mechanism for lack of arguments.

Nah. Super Metroid codified non-linear gated exploration.

If anytging fucking Faxanadu and Simon' Quest 2 deserves more credit than the Igavanias whose sole influence was castles are cool and pixel art is nice.

Wasn't the first Metroid like that?
I was told it was basically NES LoZ but 2d.

which in most cases is melee focused

that's just one part of the entire package which is combat, everything else from structure to upgrades to atmosphere comes from metroid

like where do you think ori's escape sequences come from? man I know it's probably bait but this forum's stupidity never ceases to amaze

ori

A game no one likes nor plays because it sucks cocks, thus anything regarding that game is invalid.

What games use charms? I kinda find that funny because endgame Hollow Knight tasks the player to not use charms and I would think it would be funny if the games that copy it don’t have that kind of challenge.

I think it's less the game and more the time. 2015-2018 was a crazy innovative period with many of the decades best games aging out instead of being beaten.
GTAV, Witcher 3, Skyrim

Game devs don't know how to innovate in general anymore. Or at least innovate in a way that sticks. That ship has sailed. Its all about the play it safe slop now - leave the innovation to AA and the indies.

Doesn't mario have a glitch where you can do 100 swimming levels?

Shut the fuck up you autistic retard.

it doesn't... le count!!! XD

concession and dilation accepted

9/10 on metacritic, Reddit raves about it. I buy it, got bored by the second level. I still don't know if that was just the greatest astroturfing of all time or if it's me?

This

no one likes

Really?
It was a charming little game. Short, but still fun.
And the soundtrack was stellar.

2D platformer but Snake.
You free people and they join you in a conga line. Bumping into walls without doing a wall jump or hitting the conga line loses people and you have to pick them up again.
Making the levels is gonna be a bitch

To be fair though, Hollow Knight didn't really innovate it just followed previous examples well enough that it managed to capture everyone's attention. That and the fact that the wait for the sequel became a massive meme on par with Half Life 3, GTA VI, and TES VI.

Silksonh

game copies what other games did 20+ years ago

so influential new games are modeled on it's 20+ year old setup

someone despite all this here you are

Tranny pilled

Hollow Knight understood the assignment.

1. Make an enthralling world.
2. Encourage getting lost.

That's literally it.

You can't say that here this is a safe space
We support our trans moderators

Story's comfy so I don't personally mind.

The world looks the exact same but with a different color shade (still blueish gray) getting lost is fine IF there is something worth getting lost for, which in HW there simply isn't.

maybe i'll play it if i can mod it out

Hallownest is kino thoughbeit. Extremely well realized.

Come to think of it, is it even possible to sequence-break in Ori? It's a pretty linear game, no?
Though I suppose most metroidvanias tend to be.

You'll also have to mod out boss cutscenes because you don't get to skip those either.

holy fuck how gay
you can't even fucking change the dialog speed like in VNs or double click to show the full text it's so annoying and the writing is so dogshit too

Nah, I got tired of the cave environment 30 minutes in.

A good metroidvania will always allow you to sequence break, either intentionally or accidentally.

and the writing is so dogshit too

I don't like you and neither should anyone else. I must request that you stop being disliked by me this instant.

yeah i dont really go along with people

Based retard-kun

Oh so just the opening area.

No arguments

mfw those endings

What's with every one of em being an absolute bad end for the knight & hornet, haven't played through god master yet but it's slightly better?

yeah you can sequence break in both games

And every other area after that, they are all caves.

There are two endings to Godhome, but I would say they both imply the same thing unless I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about

better combat, cozy hub area, more interesting npcs, better art design, it was a bit longer too. i liked both, but i enjoyed the sequel more.

Ender lilies and ender magnolia mogs the fuck out of reddit knight

I don't have to go along with people. But not going along with me makes me not like you. Fix it.

I don't have to go along with people.

You don't have to go along with people*

But MMX has dash jumps?

I tried how Hollow Knight thinking with how people where shilling it is was going to be some fast paced high skill metroidvania with lots of dodging and parrying but that shit was the most bland combat ever just sitting on my ass waiting for my turn to hit, I gave up after Flukemarm because of how fucking bored I was
Glad I listened to the anons shilling Nine Sols tho, one of the most enjoyable 2d action games I've ever played

I was fine-ish with Hollow Knight when I first tried it, but ever since then I got a lot more disposable income and got a lot pickier over my games. I wouldn't play a game like Hollow Knight probably even for free at this point after making several missteps (Grime, Laika, Enviro Station Alpha), but Nine Sols is a real game changer in the genre. Good thing it went on 40% off, since chinks aren't fond of sharing and I would never buy a game that costs more than 20. I'm looking forward to my weekend.

I love both HK and 9S. Simple as.
