I think it should be in a way that satisfies no one. If he dies from overdose or in a shootout or accidentally killing himself doing something stupid or rots in a jail cell, it's all just "Yeah, sounds about right." Whether he dies in a blaze of glory or in the most pathetic manner possible, it all makes sense. If he just gets run over by a drunk driver while he's crossing the street, completely irrelevant to anything he's done, you'd just go "Yeah, it's about what he deserves."
