The devs just need to study backgammon in depth because it's a turn-based game that has everything a timeless game needs (the fact that it's been played for centuries is proof of that).
It's simple and easy to learn, but has enough depth to require years of training.
It's dice-based, but the outcome of the dice doesn't define your fate if you know how to play.
It's dynamic because you have to adjust your strategy all the time according to the dices and your opponent's moves.
Etc.

People don't even hate turn based combat in reality, they just hate the IDEA of a turn based combat. Pokemon games kept selling tens of millions in the west while most 4 niggas in a row games barely sold a couple millions at best here after the ps2 era

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with how most westerners percieve "immersion breaking" things compared to Japan. The west was always lot more sensitive to unrealistic/less believable things than Japan.
Regular 4 niggas in a row gameplay is just too immersion breaking for most westerners, while in pokemon you are basically just giving orders to your pet, which is a lot more "believable" scenario

For me it's the opposite. I like turn based rpgs but Pokemon is just too braindead for me. I stopped playing like 10 years ago.
