Game gets blasted into the nostalgic stratosphere by everyone as “THE childhood game”

game gets blasted into the nostalgic stratosphere by everyone as “THE childhood game”

finally play it

it’s an absolute slog HARD carried by aesthetics and music

combat has somehow less depth than fucking Gauntlet

move on map, loading screen, 10 second nonsense cutscene, loading screen, enter dungeon, skip cutscene overview that never changes, beat everything first try every single time because the game is brain dead easy and even gives you nigh-infinite phoenix downs that auto revive if they’re equipped, loading screen, repeat

have to create dummy characters or have constant multiplayer for the starting town to have literally any life

magic is utterly useless unless it’s Gravity for flying enemies or Fire for obstacles, strength is literally all that matters

”I’m tired kupo, it’s your turn to carry the chalice”

final dungeon is such an egregious stat increase that going in with any less than 60 in STR/DEF just makes it an even bigger slog

dying to the final boss is punished by having one of the only unskippable, longest cutscenes in the game for some reason

every third party nintendo exclusive game gets hyped into the stratosphere by weird nintendo only kids who were literally unable to play anything else, see also xenoblade which is literally a single player mmo with goofy anime characters

didn't play multiplayer

Retard.

playing single player

Found your problem, dipshit

played single-player

lmao fucking retard

i do agree, this game fucking sucked ass.

Aside from the ludicrously annoying way required to play MP in the original and the stupid friend code region locked nonsense MP of the remaster, I don’t think the game actually changes much in SP because you’re ultimately still dealing with an incredibly simple and tedious experience. There’s no point to the other races beyond aesthetics because everyone can cast spells and do spell fusion.

sad but true. and i'm speaking as someone that grew up with nintendo consoles and experienced that first hand. getting out of that ecosystem for the first time was eye opening.

Got to play this with 3 other friends

Once

I'm so fucking mad

It was critically panned on release (although the scores themselves were only slightly critical).
People wanted real jrpgs on the Gamecube, especially from Squaresoft, because the N64 had all of two and it was only a bit better on the cube. And what do they give us? This kiddie co-op consolation prize.
Just like Wind Waker, no one wanted this at the time.

I'm so glad my parents got me an Xbox for Christmas instead of a Gamecube. Nintendo is a mental illness.

something releasing on gamecube as its debut platform

someone speaking positively about it

that's when you are given the go ahead to thoroughly ignore that person's opinions for the rest of your life
just be polite about it, or they might channel some of that weird energy they have into physical hostility

Same.

Square Enix shat the bed with the HD remaster, online only, removed local play. Can't even share the village with people online.

I want a new Crystal Chronicles game.

iT's bEtTeR iN MuLTIPlAYER!

need 4 fucking GBAs and GBA to GameCube cables

one person has to lug the chalice

timing combined spells is a chore

intermissions now take way longer

unless everyone is constantly playing together someone will get left behind

remake is dogshit

THIS NIGGA DOESN'T HAVE FRIENDS!

How is Echoes of Time? I saw it at an estate sale for $10 but I don't own a Wii so I haven't played it yet.

What was so bad about the Remaster? And why didn't it get a PC version?

See

carried by aesthetics and music

You missed the point.

sold at gamestop long ago never played multiplayer

Everything you said is true OP. One of the few games I owned as a child that I couldn't be assed to finish because of that gay cutscene. I did like the "mystery" of the colorless mana thing though and how you could just skip to it early. Why did they fuck up the remake so bad? Are downies in charge of that IP?

im still assmad about the remake

Are downies in charge of that IP?

Nah that's just the heads at SE same clowns who though remaking Chocobo racing and making it a pay to win battlepass game locking characters that were unlockable in the original behind purchases the company really are getting by on just XIV subs and a kingdom hearts game every ten years.

The DS ones are actually better than this one but nobody talk about them

I wish I could remember which one I played. They both look exactly the same whenever I look up screenshots. I remember playing and beating one but not the other.

Can you play these online on emulator? Can't find anything about them but I want to convince my friends to try them with me

I believe the DS games were just single player games, I think or at least I don't remember any online features back when I played one of them.

They did have a local multiplayer. I think echoes of time had online? I don't remember

Wanna get truly disappointed?
Play Chrono Trigger next
God, what a mediocre dogshit game

Inb4 the defense force shows up

It had heavy atmosphere

echoes of time is literally about a boy breaking the timeline to travel back and change his gender to female, causing rifts to appear

HARD pass

The only game of this series I played was the one with the cat girl...it was traumatizing, I am still mad over how sad it was. I will never forget how even the MC was mad at the end over how sad everything was, they crab the crystal necklace the cat girl gave them and throw i to a lake in a fit of rage because CRYSTALS were the reason why all the sad stuff happened.

Both games have online play. That's not what happens.

Just play with the Lavos Awakening mod

Best spin off spin off coming through.

carried by aesthetics and music

Crystal Chronicles is like the white elephant of the FF series.
It's carried *very* fucking hard by its' visuals and soundtrack, but everyone is right when they say it's not good to play and it's a bunch of bullshit no matter if you play with friends or by yourself. The art team really hit it out of the park though: the character designs, the towns, the story, the music, everything comes together besides gameplay.

youtube.com/watch?v=7Q6ygqCwTIo Honestly, they should have just made an OVA instead of a game.

Absolutely agree. It’s one of those games where everything *except* the gameplay is top-tier. The soundtrack still lives rent-free in my head (Kumi Tanioka didn’t miss), and the whole atmosphere had this mystical, storybook quality that made it feel magical—until you had to carry that damn chalice for the 500th time. An OVA would've probably done justice to that world without letting the gameplay drag it down.

If you manage to get everything needed for 4P multiplayer it's a genuinely magical game.
I played it with my siblings when we lived together and we still talk about it 20+ years later.

When will AI get good enough to play co-op games with?

I've heard like no one speak highly of this game ever.
It was kind of neat at the time, if you had friends to play it with, but then Four Swords Adventures came out, and I never touched it again.
Who is calling this a classic?

Ring of Fates multiplayer mode is a direct sequel to its own single player mode.

I haven't actually played that much vidya after Super Nintendo era. But my little brother had Crystal Chronicles at our parents' place so I played it every time I visited, and eventually finished too. I remember almost nothing of it though. It felt magical though. Atmosphere was great. Thanks for reading.

Ring of Fates was the depressing one with the scene of the main character burying his father. The ending felt depressing to me too but maybe I just didn't understand it.

game was designed with co-op campaign in mind

remaster completely disables co-op campaign progress

How many years until we get a functional re-remaster?

In the current age I don't see it happening.
Although I could be wrong, I think DQB had co-op progress if you were playing online

They used their power to create a new world, which is the one the rest of the series takes place in. Crystal Chronicles, My life as a king, my life as a darklord, echoes of time, crystal bearers, and the multiplayer mode of ring of fates all take place in the world Yuri and Chelinka create with their powers at the end of Ring of Fates single player.
But yeah, the scene where she's catatonic and he has to bury his father after watching him being murdered (and has no tools, so he's digging by hand) is something else
Also, what Yuri does to the villain at the end is wild. Well deserved, but wild.

A few years ago, my CC disk broke, or I thought it broke, so I bought a second disk and it behaved exactly the same as the first one did- the game would launch, I could get to the menu, hit new game and reach the opening cut scene and then the game would crash. I never found a solution to it. Any ideas? It'd be weird if I found TWO bad disks. All of my other gamecube games still work, but the fact that the game broke twice leaves me clueless. Any attempts at fixing this will be done later, my gamecube is still at my parents' house and I'm at uni

Until someone decompiles the original gamecube game.

The villain got time looped right? Also I think when I played I thought the ending was an escapism coping kind of one but I guess I was wrong.

yeah, Yuri traps him in a short timeloop but leaves him completely aware of what's happening, but unable to do anything about it.
The last we see of him is hearing his internal thoughts as he's screaming inside his head for someone to save him as Yuri seals him in the tower.
