Almost all of the models can be told directly to shut the fuck up and keep it short and sweet. Annoying, because eventually you have to OOC command it every input, but keep in mind that these LLMs are still (relatively) new and aren't great yet, even the ones that are abhorrently expensive.

Unless you're intently babying every aspect of it, you're not getting more than 5 generations without a mistake happening. If you have a simple enough concept, you can go for dozens of generations without any issues, but one deviation from that simple scenario will cause it to break.

On Silly Tavern, look for an option called Quick Replies. It makes little buttons on the bottom that you can press and it sends a predetermined message. You can use this to tell the AI to just continue the story on its own, to rewrite in a specific way, etc.

Tardwrangling AI is something we've always had to do, from the days of CharacterAI down to modern Deepseek V3. Assistant AIs are passive and cooperative, so if you want to make a character that takes control of things or that rejects what you're telling it, it can be quite hard.
Fortunately, there are models that are excellent at doing things on their own. Specially Claude, god bless the mad poet and his insane creativy. Opus should still be by far the best Rp AI model. Problem is, it's fucking expensive, and Claude isn't as easy to "steal".
The baseline these days is Deepseek V3 and Gemini.
It's a non-issue if you're using stolen keys. And if you're using openrouter or paypigging, just make another account. Such things happening are exceptionally rare.

I think you're using a pretty terrible setup. AI flubs stuff eventually no matter what, but whatever model you're using doesn't mesh with the character you're using. Sometimes you have to use a different model for different cards because they're written with certain models in mind.
They can have amazing memory, but the longer you make it, the more expensive it becomes. Context size is limited by the economic factors, more than the technological ones.
I hate it when you write out thoughts and a bot thinks it was something that was said out loud.
We've already come a long way, though. CharacterAI's context size when it came out was minuscule. The jailbreak/formatting prompts we use today are many times larger than the entire context size of CAI.

I've noticed despite benching pretty high, finetunes are always slightly less smart than the official releases. But the official models are very dry and don't like to talk about 'u safe' things. For those of you lurking who just want to try this out in a secure way without having to learn a bunch of shit or spend any money, you want Backyard AI. It's about as noob-friendly as it's ever going to get.
You can run it locally, it has a desktop and mobile application, and they have a wide variety of models at different levels to accommodate a wide range of hardware.
It has a model browser built-in that will tell you how a model will perform on your setup, and you can download the models right from the browser. Set one of the downloaded models as your default model, and you're good to go.
From there, you can either write your own character card, or get one from the hub. Make sure you look at the character cards if you get them from the hub though; they don't moderate for quality, they only take down things that could potentially land them in legal hot water. So if you look at the character card, and it's full of spelling errors or it's jumbled and confusing, or it's just a wiki dump, that's going to be a shit card. Look for ones that are well-written, with good prose and are written with the intent to be used as an AI character.
If your hardware truly sucks though or you REALLY want to try a high quality model, they do have some paid shit where you can use high-end models on the cloud, but those are not free and they're not local so if you're going to get up to some weird weird shit I don't recommend it. All these sites claim their chats are safe and secure but at the end of the day, if you use a cloud model you're still transferring info over the internet, it's inherently insecure.
I'll be around for a little while if anybody has questions about this or wants to see anything from the desktop app. I'm not a dev or anything, just an experienced user and BY was my gateway to all this, so I don't mind plugging them a bit.

Lorebooks are simple, you write a set of trigger words, then some info about them.
So whenever that trigger word, the model immediately pulls up the info phrase from the lorebook and adds it to the context. It's a way to add information to a setting that is only put in memory when needed instead of inflating token counts.
