Peak Fire Emblem gameplay. Balanced around maddening/fixed and really incentivizes you to know the game in and out to succeed in some of the later chapters.

Engage’s story isn’t that bad, it’s on par with most games in the series only seems cheesier because of full voice acting and the other game for comparison for most people is 3 Houses(which is more of a shitshow for different reasons).

The idea is that each map should have its own episode story, which is why when you get to end-game, in order to make it seem more "epic" you get a bunch of big reveals/events each chapter, all completely unrelated to each other.

Combat good, animations good, Bad story even for fire emblem standards. Considering this is an up-jumped anniversary game, I actually have hope for the next game.

Engage relay battles are actually genius and fun, and some of the most fun I've had interacting with other players. Seeing people's decisions, trained units, blunders or miracle comebacks is really fun. I really enjoy getting a low level unit player take over my desert map for instance, and seeing how they handle that superior stat blobs. Sometimes I'll be overly ambitious with my starting 2 turns (I'm sorry pandreo, I thought you could dodge a 40%) and leave the map in shambles, and the next person pulls it back from my near wipe.

I hope these relay battles come back and we get more.

Nta but I'm actually impressed by how the manga actually tries to fix some of Engage's terrible plot points. Does it still make the whole world and premise great? No, it's flaws are sadly ingrained into the narrative. Do few people know about the manga and read it? Yes, it's really a small percentage. But I still want to show my apreciation to the mangaka who had to work with the few scraps he was handed to make something that's actually digestible for the audience.

The gameplay is hugely unbalanced thanks to the ring system, there's a bunch of busywork in between missions at the home base again (but not as much as Three Houses, thank god), and the story sucks dick again, though at least many of the problems with the writing are the fault of the abysmal localisation and can be fixed with the retranslation patch.

A part of me likes to believe that the game's plot being regular (I wouldn't call it utterly bad, just regular) was somehow also because of the pandemic. And that manga's plot was the "original plan".

They are not since they are not part of the characters psyche and they can be damaged unlike Personas.
Plus thats nothing compared to the whole school calendar system that drives and gatekeeps the plot.
Not to mention the art is very reminiscent of Persona to the point the trailer reaction was that somehow IS got Soejima.

I always loved that scene at the end of chapter 19 in FE5 where Leif receives the news of Seliph's rebellion in Isaach and where August explains to him why people see him as a hero. The music adds a lot to it too.
