If you read Kaneko's original proposal you can see how ridiculous the scope of the narrative he made was and the final games makes tbe dumb decision to try to keep as much of it as possible. It's made worse by them trying to shoehorn references to SMT1/2 on top of all of this.

Well, no dungeons still applies to VV, but the dungeons suck anyway, it's good there aren't many of them. The overworld progression with the multiple layers and pathways in the later areas is much better than traditional Atlus corridors.

This is every fucking Megaten game across the board but especially any that has press turn. The difficulty is basically that you don't have the catalog of moves to deal with every potential threat so getting a demon up to spec to deal with specific problems is the main challenge for the first few hours.

Once you have a whole catalog of demons to summon and a bunch of generalists and specialists in your pocket, the games' difficulty mostly comes from being able to sustain endurance slugfests of buffing/debuffing/healing with superbosses.

With SMT4 it's just more noticeable because of the way damage is handled that it makes every fight like the turn-based equivalent of Quake deathmatch.

I don't really hate it, but playing it immediately after SMT IV makes the tone shift REALLY apparent.

You'll notice if you look at the fusion menu all the demons actually use like 8 place holder stat pools instead of unique stats for every demon like most game. Mikado vs real Tokyo along with the demon meat thing, Lucifer vs YHVH, and Masakado wank is all SMTII. There is much more of II than I. In fact the game has a lot of references to previous games that are purely fan service.

Navarre is a goofball in both games.

Navarre is a miniscule part of IV. He is present at start of the game during the early Naraku stages and then fucks off for the other 99% of the game. He's then present at the tail-end of the game IF you choose to do an optional sidequest that involves him.
Navarre in IVa on the other hand joins you very early on and stays with you all the way up to end-game, even late end-game if you chose to go the 'Bonds' route.

You are right about those points, SMT4 feels a bit half-baked and sloppy. Story feels like it loses severe focus around the time of Ichigaya Namek. Most people started with SMT4 as their first mainline game and hold it in high regards for that alone.

If you've ever read through the development it was basically hell since half of the game's team was new to Atlus, most having to kind of prior interest or understanding of the series. I think they really believed that persona was big enough of a cashcow that mainline could coexist alongside it but barely anyone imvolved with it was even left at Atlus by the early 2010s.

That's the typical Persona and SMT curve desu. SMT 3 and Persona 3-5 are all the same way.
