2. MMOs, join a casual raiding guild and you will passively make friends just being around the guildies over time

It's that easy. Granted, this is almost impossible in games with huge playerbases and constant player rotation between matches, so if that's the case you're shit outta luck. Your best bet then is to convince your friends to get the game, or just make rl friends and convince them to play with you (though this might be asking for too much).

the thing that really hurt me as a kid was in Diablo 2 where your friends list was capped at 25, so logging in and typing /f list and seeing that you were no longer friends with someone you did Baal runs with often was enough to make me just not play for a while
