As I’ve been writing the story for my first hack, I’ve continuously found myself thinking the story would make more sense if it had incestuous themes. It follows a royal family(ala generic fire emblem), and the siblings all turn on eachother in a war of succession. However some of the characters are less enthusiastic about this war and killing their siblings than others, particularly ones who were close beforehand. Mayhaps extremely close. As in neglectful parents and my brother/sister is my only friend type of close.

Thing is, in real life, this type of situation can often lead to sexual rather than typical sibling relationships as a result of the environment. It would also really drive home how some of the characters are forced to fight against people they really care about while adding a bit of controversial flare to the story. I also fear if I don’t do it, people will think it’s implied anyway with the relationships the characters have.

It’s still incest though, and that’s obviously a big deal. Do you guys think it’s worth the risk adding it in this specific situation? My big fear is that this my first hack and also my first story ever, and as somebody who wants to write more for stuff, I don’t really want to be hated right of the bat. Any responses are appreciated.

One of the earliest romhacks I tried was mostly base FE7 but the author self inserted himself (replaces hector) just so he can waifu his favorite FE girl, Linoan (replaces Lyn).
So naturally you can pair Linoan with another character and cuck the dev, which everyone made fun of him for.

I've played a lot of romhacks and this one was extremely "mid" as the kids would say. I don't see how it could be anywhere remotely close to the "best" one but feel free to share what stood out to you.

I wouldn't let it influence my appraisal, gameplay is gameplay, but felt it was worth mentioning; why do so many "women" in this hack just straight up look like men? Not masculine women, just men. It's really bizarre, do they think they're making some kind of point?

NB hack, more accurately. I noticed the pronouns thing and at certain points I checked my party and consistently over half the party used they pronouns, it was very odd.

There's a portrait maker that just lets you swap around features from all the GBA casts and romhackers who aren't artists sometimes use those without cleaning them up or editing them to look decent and you get abominations like that. I'm honestly getting sick of the GBA art style after seeing so many romhacks.

Yeah, one of the biggest problems with the hack I'm experiencing so far is it really encourages you to turn it into bait and kill gameplay with a tanky unit you can just heal in between luring hoards since the single healer design really discourages multitasking.

Anon here noted one of best ones . Cerulean Crescent has very cool map and unit design, solid writing that manages to both be funny in places and still be taken seriously (a very challenging feat), and a few fantastic mindfuck moments that I want to gush about but don't want to ruin for others. Andaron Saga is also excellent, but its plot is obviously Game of Thrones. Morrow's Golden Country mentioned earlier in the thread played pretty well but I remember not giving a damn about the plot.

I just remembered the thing about this romhack that drove me insane; how much they dicksuck that mercenary party that you play a mini campaign with.

The mercenary party dies and everybody keeps talking about them, over and over. Even characters who never met them (and literally acknowledge this) can't stop going on and on and on about them. It's super ridiculous and does not feel like real people talking at all. Must be an OC that's super important the creator.

It's a thing I see in writing sometimes where it's like the writer is autistic and can't comprehend that just because he likes the two characters he made, the two characters don't necessarily share the feelings the writer has and like each other, especially if they've had little to LITERALLY ZERO screen time together. I can't understate how much they do this involving the mercenary character. Makes me want to rip my hair out and scream "YOU WERE NOT FRIENDS."

It's been a bit of time since I played the hack, but from what I recall, the main characters didn't meet the mercenaries once (well maybe quickly in one of the town segments, I can't say with 100% certainly that the blue haired girl didn't, but the pink haired guy I'm pretty sure never did. It was just funny to have this super dramatic party getting scripted events in a chapter that killed them then later you fight them reanimated and it's treated like a tearjerker and afterwards the pink haired guy gives this heartfelt speech about the mercenaries he never met. I almost recommend playing it specifically to read how ridiculous it is.

One of the guys returned with a solo project: Drums of War, and after it was decently well-received, recruited the artist and got token support from the rest of the original team to finish it as a Definitive Edition. A solid, vanilla hack if you ask me.

If I remember right, you actually meet the individual members of the mercs through the early game, even if they don't do much (the crit-for-money guy is a green unit in the "talk to Zeke's dad" chapter, for example), survivors join you later on and some later recruits are connected with them and Zeke is mostly moping because he feels like a screwup who indirectly killed them all when he just became a rightful heir of a nation that he feel unworthy of being. Blair would cry about everything. Still melodramatic, but it makes a bit of sense.

I don't think there were any gender based skills in the morrow's golden country and the only reason I can say that with any confidence is that I would have found it funny and tested to see if anyone has any unexpected interactions with them, like if a character who was strictly they/them triggered a male or female based skill

^this game and FE8 self randomizer are the only romhacks worth playing. A lot of other romhacks make you go, "Oh thats interesting" for a few maps before their flaws just piss you off beyond your tolerance.
Sohae and sun gods are perfect examples. The unique level design/objectives of sohae and the fuckload of mechanics in sun gods wrath make the games appear really interesting, but they are fucking torture to play through once the novelty wears off.

Though of course it's not like I expect a character to express their feelings perfectly all the time, it could be interpreted that he's projecting something out there towards them. It was largely all the other stuff on top of it that made the party's reactions to it feel insanely over the top. It just came across as crazily reverent towards the mercs, if you told me that Viridian was the creator's childhood OC, I'd believe it.
