They didn't actually write a non-human. They wrote a creature that is emotionally and mentally human but with a different coat of paint, because humans are fundamentally incapable of modeling non-human thought in a way that would make for a decent story. Nobody knows how a snakeman would actually think. They just take a human and make it vaguely snakey.

If you want to read a story that somewhat attempts to actually model a non-human's thoughts and culture, you need to read something like Children of Time by Tchaikovsky.
