The combat system is fun, it controls well and is responsive with some really good animation work and it has really good enemy and boss design plus the levels are pretty well paced with lots of exploration. I'm not sure what you really want to hear but while it's nothing that'll blow your mind SB is just an incredibly solid action game. Even if you completely ignored the sex appeal it's up there for the genre. It's fun. Simple as.

The story has some interesting aspects but it is somewhat clunky in its telling, this might be a side effect of the translation, I don't know. There's still a number of great scenes and sequences, but the script is a little awkward sounding. Voice acting ranges from fine to not fine.

Gameplay is really fun, it's not DMC, it's heavier than that so you're not doing endless combos but there's plenty to get good at and the bosses are big highlights of the game. Music is phenomenal, one of the best soundtracks of last year.

If you want Nier Automata, you don't want Stellar Blade. The similarities are only skin deep. Despite the developers citing NA as an inspiration, SB takes inspiration from a lot of games. Tomb Raider/Uncharted, Resident Evil/Dead Space, Sekiro/DMC. it even has platforming sections.

If you want a remarkable game, you won't find it in Stellar Blade. That's assuming your definition of "remarkable" would result in less than 10 games you played in all time. If you want a good game, Stellar Blade may be it. Of course, you still have to like what Stellar Blade has to offer.

But to you and many folks like who are hesitant about purchasing a game at full price from an unknown developer and new IP, I'd just say wait. If you're not eager to try something new that may end up not being what you want, just check out the things you know you already like.

I would suggest playing the demo, but looks like the PC version won't get one. Personally, the PS5 demo is what sold me on the game. Because getting a feel for the game is important to me. Even a small taste with a demo, which sometimes isn't representative of a full game, helps me take the dive. But even then, I've played demos and disliked the rest of a game.

I would definitely say Stellar Blade is not a Nier Automata knock off.

Often, when I see comparisons of the two, I feel like the person has not played both games. While there are similarities, again, they feel skin deep. If you wanted to bring up similarities between Stellar Blade and another game, I would use NIKKE, the mobile game Shift Up makes. I only noticed those similarities when I picked up the mobile game after enjoying Stellar Blade. But there are a lot of core concepts shared between the two games. However, they play very differently.

And I think that's something fairly different about Stellar Blade compared to Nier Automata. The combat, especially, is a point of distinction. There's no juggling, enemies are more threatening and surprising, and the focus on parrying makes the combat system quite dissimilar to Nier Automata. Story wise, the two also diverge quite a bit. There's far less philosophical stuff going on in Stellar Blade and it's basic story is pretty straight forward. Also, no shota.

But it isn't fair to say there are no similarities between the two. I just don't think they're that meaningful. When Nier Automata fans gush over that game, they talk a lot about the story, the characters, the philosophy, etc. Not the combat or gameplay that much. I personally think the story in Stellar Blade is ok to good, but not the core of the experience. I think the gameplay is more of the core.

Let me put it another way, if you took the story out of Nier Automata and still had similar gameplay mechanics tied to another story, unrelated to the themes and plot of the Taroverse, would it still be Nier Automata? Because, I contend that Nier Automata could have been essentially a visual novel and still been 90% of what makes the game's experience distinct from other games.

On the other hand, I think Stellar Blade's experience lies more in the gameplay than its story. While changes its story would be significant, cause it is a narrative-focused experience, its the gameplay experience that I enjoyed the most and which, outside of the fanservice stuff, has made up a lot of the discourse of the game.

The enemies are fun to fight. So are the boss fights. Getting the parries, the dodges. Doing no hit runs. The boss rush feature. People would discuss Stellar Blade somewhat like how people talk about Fromsoft boss fights. Although SB is not nearly as hard as Fromsoft's game. That's not the same as Nier Automata discourse, even if sometimes those topics do come up for NA.
