The lines get too blurry with active combat systems like E33's in my opinion. Imagine a "turn based" Final Fantasy game that uses ATB but also has the E33 combat system. That might as well be a real time arpg. The only thing that changes is that you don't have to move your character in combat.

Just make it non mandatory or just for higher difficulties with an autoparry or a chance autoparry. Like the combo modes in dmc 4. Give every kind of people a different experience and everybody is happy. The problem of 33 is the fact that if i miss i die is not a problem of damage or hinderance, is basically a oneshot and it's boring and stupid. There is a middle ground. But sure as fuck full arpg is not coming back (which was dumb in principle because suddenly everyone was against turn based when turn based both east and west were always appreciated anyway).

E33 doesn't kill action rpgs, it makes sure that turn based games now play more like action rpgs. This will be a Hollow Knight moment where an entire genre is transformed. After Hollow Knight, metroidvanias became 2D Soulslikes and I'm fairly confident that's how this situation plays out where turn based RPGs will all be parry games in 4 or 5 years. Action RPGs won't die because that's what Soulslikes are and they're still massively popular.
