How is gaming on Linux? I'm thinking about making the switch come October. I'm already test driving Arch on my Thinkpad and I love using the command line. It's so simple.

Linux is so much more POWERFUL right sis??

How is gaming on Linux? I'm thinking about making the switch come October. I'm already test driving Arch on my Thinkpad and I love using the command line. It's so simple.

It's pretty good. Usually it's rather slightly better or slightly worse than Windows for games. The real appeal is to have a snappy OS again. Windows is so fucking slow these days.

If I keep posting this poopOS packaging mishap that was fixed like 5 minutes after Linus PEBKAC'd his install, more people will install Windows 11!

I heard that if you ever have to type "Yes. Do as I say!", you're about to make a grave mistake.

What's the best Linux OS for gaming?

You can literally do the same trick on Windows too
It's basically the same as on Windows sometimes better sometimes worse. Overall definitely better. I'm on Arch too but I barely use the terminal

WOOOOOOOOW

So who was that tard anyway?

tfw get roughly 10-20 more fps on average on fedora

redhat.jpg - 900x700, 44.84K

I really love options like --force that require yet another that's then just --really-force

It's funny seeing techlets try to get into Linux, probably scammed by some jewtuber. Stay in your lane reatrds

Is it distro-specific?
I've never had anything like that, usually you just type y or n in the terminal

ecelebs are retarded

Lel
Anything arch-based should do the trick or nix if you are a schizo

Works on my machine, and on my other machine, and on my other other machine.

It's mostly fine as long as you don't play any MP games with aggressive anti-cheat like CoD.

begin steam installation

system prompts you to uninstall the desktop

the installation literally can not continue unless the desktop is uninstalled, so it's obviously an intentional feature and not a bug

get called a retard on Anon Babble if you rightly call that bad design

Due to a packaging error, steam wanted to remove the desktop environment to install. The package manager knew this was a terrible idea and set up roadblocks. Linux told it to do it anyway, and got kicked to a terminal.
Note: this could easily be recovered from.

Packages have dependencies
Some dependencies break others
You can force to install the package cause the break, but that usually results in a chain reaction of dozens or hundreds of packages being uninstalled

doom the dark ages doesn't work on linux

the linux tax strikes again

It works the same way as on Windows (both parties bitch about technical difficulties and both parties have users who have no issues at all).

Retard ignored the warning about dependencies conflicting with others and blame the system for letting it happen

To continue type in the phrase 'Yes, do as I say!'

Is this a distro thing? I use Mint and it's just a basic type in 'Y/N'

ive always wondered, how does someone manage to uninstall the desktop while installing steam anyways?
moreover what kind of a retard reads "this will DESTROY YOUR PC ARE YOU REALLY SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS?" and then types "yes! do as i say!"

except dark ages flat-out doesn't launch on linux

Does Space Marine 2(co-op, not offline) work on loonix?
What's a good loonix distro for a 4070?

Most options are y/n, except when it's for something absolutely retarded that will break the system.

Steam is a 32bit application and depends on a lot of system libraries. Force installing it, and thus installing quite a lot of 32bit exclusive packages with it, breaks things pretty badly in most cases.

I dont even know if I'm supposed to take this video seriously, but it's funny either way

im on popos linux right now and have steam installed though, this has literally never happened to me

Normalcuck sees a lot of lines on the screen and starts pissing in its diaper, the other anon explained it but if linus (a notorious grifter and dishonest and evil cunt) didn't fiddle around with stuff just for the heck of it it probably shouldn't have happened.
If you can build a gaming pc you're more than equipped to run easy distros like mint or pop os, they're not more complicated than windows and the terminal is entirely skippable especially for the normalfag stuff.
The cunt is just acting histrionic for clout.
Imagine start screaming and calling the news because you got a blue screen of death or kicked the power chord.

packaging error

False; all open source software is peer reviewed and regularly audited. This would have been caught before making it to the end user.

not using flatpak for Steam

NEVER GONNA MAKE IT

Yesterday I updated Nvidia drivers on my Windows machine and afterwards it wouldn't boot anymore.
All software is perpetually broken and there is no escape from this hell.
I hate computers.

Still gaming on Linux
Still have my linux server that has all my pirated movies, porn, and anime
Still not using wintroon

linus is such a moron, i knew that video was gonna be a trainwreck the moment he picked popOS

The steam flatpak is pretty much abandoned.

Exactly, wincrap is a $16 McDonalds hamburger while linux is a $10 steak cooked on charcoal.
You pay more to get less, and let's quit with this bullshit that linux is hard I legit choose linux over any subhuman crap microsoft produces simply because it's less annoyance.

Gotta admit, I did not expect that bloated mess to run that good on that machine. Still won't buy one until they release the deck 2 tho.

If you knew how much of a piece of shit he is you'd wish he got cancer.
He really sucks as a person.

Yep, and it's linux on top of all that.

Finally moved my gayman PC to Linux while trying to work out why my PC randomly started shitting itself running games it ran fine before.
Windows wasn't the problem but at least I finally checked that to-do off my list after putting it off for 5 years. If only I could play vidya on it.

It depends on the gravity of what you're doing, y or n is for normal stuff. What the terminal makes you type to confirm gets more verbose and specific depending on how much damage you're about to cause.

Anon, the whole series is Linux Sebastian, the creator of linus, having user error shit and blaming everyone else but himself.

qrd?

What sort of shitting itself we're talking about?
If your machine is indeed 5 years old, its probably time to do shit like replacing the thermal paste.

EVER using ubuntu based distros

apt

You only have yourselves to blame.

More up to date distro with latest drivers and kernel

Somehow has greater performance

Wew, who would've known bro.
6.14 came with the ntsync shit and now you get literally free fps with proton ge and proton cachyos.

The linux equivalent of the steam installation EXE told half of his computer to delete itself, something that should never ever ever ever happen. He got Linux'd.

Go to install a common program

Common program somehow completely fucks your system

"yeah but he confirmed it"

Steam shouldn't have nuked desktop in the first place.

Makes sense
So Linus basically deliberately did a really stupid thing just for content and views
Isn't Steam already pre-installed on that disto anyway?
Even on Ubuntu it is super easy to install it without breaking anything

it doesn't

I can't stand linux tinkertrannies

Honestly, I'd rather deal with amd drivers being shit and kernel panicking my computer if I watch videos in firefox than ever having to use windows again.
Plus, I'm a programmer, using linux just werks, while on windows you have to jump through hoops to setup the environment just to end up basically having to run linux on top of the very own windows.

apt should never break a system just because you had the _audacity_ of installing a package - no matter what package.

If snappy you mean KDE snapping in half and crashing, then yeah I guess it's snappy.
Windows is faster.

apt based distro

IMG_0600.jpg - 391x431, 127.48K

He's just a cunt that wouldn't think twice about firing you over 2 drops less of milk in his coffee if that meant you and your 2 children will starve to death, always plays the victim, he uses arguments like WHY DO YOU CARE YOUR WIFE GOT IMPREGNATED IN AFRICA, IT'S THE CURRENT YEAR!!!!!!, exploits those who work under him, he has this fake as fuck nice guy facade but in reality he's as cruel as he can possibly be, so on and so forth.
Oh and his videos are factually wrong and he's dishonest in everything.

Take some fucking responsibility for your retarded actions, faggot.

It's been a few years since KDE 4

oh I'm well aware of him being a complete scumbag

He LITERALLY just "apt install steam"
How the fuck could apt ever break a system like this? It's ridiculous.

KDE constantly has 15 minute bugs needing fixed because their devs add "features" first and ask if it's worth it later
it's absolutely not

Yeah, he was using Linux after all. Should have just assumed doing the most basic thing you can with an OS would explode the entire system.

So Linus basically deliberately did a really stupid thing just for content and views

He may have just not read any of what the console was yelling at him. He genuinely could have just kept pressing yes and choosing the yes option assuming there could never be a problem and consoles just look like that or something. Very stupid but I prefer to attribute to stupidity over malice. Read warning messages kids!

just to end up basically having to run linux on top of the very own windows.

Yeah, usually it all results in you installing WSL 2 or something
I'd rather run normal OS and run Windows programs through Wine than have a really shitty OS with paywalled features that keeps fighting you and running Linux VM on top of it
Plus with flatpaks you can now have decent level of sandboxing for your programs and I can't imagine Windows ever getting something cool like that

pressing yes

he had to type the full sentence
It wasn't just "y" press

Yeah he chose the yes option. Yes that is stupid to not take a moment to wonder if maybe the console is wanting him to hesitate and perhaps read the warning.

Yeah he chose the yes option

once again, no he didn't
He literally had to type in the full sentence
"Yes, I agree to nuke my entire desktop"
It is not just choosing the option which indeed can be just a user error

It's different for every game I've tried but every game is shitting itself in one way or another. I rebuilt it last year while upgrading so thermal paste shouldn't need replaced and it was an issue that appeared overnight.
I think it's either a dying PSU or a faulty RAM stick, but I'm not turning it on again until I've replaced the PSU in case it explodes.

some games ran worse for me im not sure how its called but like freezing upon doing an action the first time but then after that it is fine

be big techtuber

be computer illiterate

might just be illiterate in general

this shouldn't be possible...

Dude I don't even use linux but it outright told him what was going to happen.
They had to retard proof windows to the detriment of people like me specifically because of tards bricking their computers.

Then LITERALLY typed through and obvious "this will fuck up your system" prompt. And apt can install or remove just about anything, of course it can break shit

and I can't imagine Windows ever getting something cool like that

Theoretically, windows 11 comes preconfigured to run every single application in a vm, which made so at first games ran at like 30% the fps than on windows 10.
So I guess they already got that implemented but in a really dumbfuck way.

So he had 2 options, both meaning yes or no. He chose the yes one. Yes it is possible for a person to be stupid to the point where they will type out that full sentence without reading the warning or considering what may be off. If you disagree then we'll just have to agree to disagree, but I do not think it was a common normal person user error, this mistake was especially idiotic. The message being verbose does not make it super-idiot proof.

Enter a McDonalds

Do you want this hamburger?

"Yes"

Do you really want this hamburger?

"Yes, I do."

Turns out the hamburger was made out of AIDs and now you have AIDs.
The main issue here isn't that the hamburger was made out of AIDs, it's you saying yes that you wanted a hamburger assuming it wasn't made out of AIDs.
Clearly getting AIDs in this situation is entirely your fault.

And apt can install or remove just about anything, of course it can break shit

A distro or package manager that breaks an entire system just because you installed STEAM is undefendable.

Saar, this isn't the designated shitting street, saar

>Enter a McDonalds

>Do you want this hamburger?

>"Yes"

>This hamburger is poisoned by the way and you will die if you eat it, are you sure you still want it?

>"Yes, I do."

How could this happen indeed.

go to mcdonalds

sign says WARNING:This burger will infect you with aids

employee says you must manually type out yes I want the aids burger

get aids

woooow

Not even arch is that bad.

Why did McDonalds have an AIDsburger in the first place?

Because there was a temporary error in the shipping process.

Because linus fucked up in the first place on purpose for views, if he did it like any normal person he would have his steam ready and running.

There was a special pozz day, and Linux Racemixing Tips jumped for that chance.

skill issue, I'm running steam through Ubuntu on a refurbished corporate workstation with an 8 year-old GPU all of which I bought off of ebay

if you're too dumb to install steam, on any os, maybe you're too dumb to have an opinion
how about that?

in those videos this guy used every trick in the handbook to build a parasocial relationship with the viewer.
is everyone in Youtube a fucking psychopath?

his business is selling ads so making free things look bad is part of his pitch to advertisers
like the infomercials where its too hard to crack an egg, or some other mundane task
part of the pitch is making simple things look hard to dumbasses
youtube.com/watch?v=5IAC8E4Af1U

it doesnt
they went out of their way to set it up to fail like that for the video
because 'corporate shill'

...so why did it prompt him to break his system in the first place? is everything on lunix like this?

I guess they already got that implemented but in a really dumbfuck way.

Microsoft in a nutshell
Your kernel can't even run processes in isolation? No big deal, just run them in a VM
It was funny how they killed the whole WSL 1 that was supposed to be their version of Wine and just replaced it with a VM
One would think that a company with infinite money could invest at least a tiny amount of it in its products

Yes. Because you're actually in charge of what happens.

wears a ring on his right hand

LEFT hand.
Nobody wear rings in a right hand.

probably whoever maintains the package made a mistake but yea linux will let you break your system if thats what you really want to do

I use CachyOS and have been happy so far. I heard Nobara was good too.
Just so some research and decide

If you really want to do something there, nobody is stopping you.
This is what freedom feels like
Plus technically it didn't really break his system, even without GUI Linux is still perfectly usable. That is how it runs on servers. Different people can have different preferences and use cases.

All that aside he probably just tampered with it and broke it on purpose, gaming distros already should have steam pre-installed

If the standard Steam setup.exe hosed a Windows system, Valve would have patched the problem within the hour and they'd still be having articles written about their massive screw-up for the next week.

Reminder anyone who says it "broke" or "bricked" his system are wrong because it removed the desktop environment, which could've been recovered with a few commands.
Regardless, if he did what every fucking apt tutorial tells you to do and update the repo list or use an up to date iso this wouldn't have happened. It also affected ONLY Pop!OS

is linux gaming still shit on nvidia?

removing desktop doesn't break your system, you can install it (or another desktop) back with 1 terminal command

Define shit. It is still usable and does get stable performance, just don't expect every nvidia feature to work out of the box.

The only games that don't work are only the most normie of games.

Roblox

R6 Siege

Fortnite

So, if you stick to good games, you're fine. Everything I want to play work.

I hate windows as much as anyone else but I'm also not gonna deny that linux is also complete dogshit, for different reasons
at least window's perk is that it "just works" and you don't have to be an autist to make your OS usable

I mean performance being noticeably worse. I'm on a 3060 so can't afford losing fps

Linux works fine as long as you don't try to install steam, which has a high risk of bricking your system.

are you sure you want to fuck yourself in the ass with a rusty pipe?

yes

get ass tetanus

WOOOOOOOW NOTHING I COULD DO

why are windowsfags like this?

don't fall for it like I did, proton is glitchy as fuck and a meme

Why is there even a regular installation step that has a "proceed" option that nukes your desktop?!

What kind of ass backwards neurotic OS is this?

You are about to do something potentially harmful.

To continue type in the phrase 'Yes, do as I say!'

Types in 'Yes, do as I say!'

Program does something harmful

How could this possibly have happened?!

don't fall for it

Nobody stops you from dual-booting
The cool thing about Linux is that trying it out costs you literally nothing

This is just a general trend I've noticed, windows users seem to throw up their hands and blame every piece of software for not working instead of figuring out why it isn't working and reporting back (Or worse case living with the bugs and saying "This is fine, I just won't do that."). At least Macfags bitch and moan in their own hipster way and occasionally bring you logs to look at. Linuxfags will 100% absolutely try to diagnose an issue and the triggers for it then try to bring it up to you with logs.
t. IT support for companies that do use Windows, Mac and sometimes Linux for servers who also makes software on the side.

I wonder what that is the case, I've noticed it as well when just helping family with their computer troubles, most don't even look up error codes or even a simple web search of the issue to see if anyone else is experiencing it, just throw their hands up.

You dont have to defend installing steam leading to nuking your desktop by blaming it on the user lmao

You are about to make a retarded post

To continue, type in the captcha

Anon types in the captcha

Makes a retarded post

How could this possibly have happened?!

You're right the correct linux way of doing stuff is select "no" and give up trying to do anything. Then go back to Windows.

It is an agnostic function that ensures that competing packages can't cause even further system faults. Sometimes, since Linux users are weird let's be frank here, they do want to nuke the desktop environment. However, since not many of them would like to do that, it gives a big warning beforehand.

kek

Linux allows the user to brick their system when they try to install steam

It's the fault of the user

#nomnomnom.png - 371x353, 115.06K

This is just a general trend I've noticed, windows users seem to throw up their hands and blame every piece of software for not working instead of figuring out why it isn't working

No, the general trend in using Windows is for stuff to run normally and not have to dig through obscure forums for a solution where half the system broke down because you tried to install a calculator.

You people are the reason windows buries every important feature behind 3 different windows and still tells me it won't let me do what i want it to.

pick up gun

voice in your head says are you sure you want to blow your brains out?

YES

WOW WHY IS THIS AN OPTION?

windowsfags everyone

What amazes me is that I've never seen that problem ever happening on my Debian drives before, and I did try PopOs at one point. How can installing steam compromise and wipe out the display driver and the entirety of the OS too?

User consents to Linux removing the Desktop Environment after showing that this action would remove their desktop environment, leading them to either diagnose the issue or wait for an update/statement regarding this issue and how to fix it

Somehow isn't the user's fault.

It's not like you were coerced to say "Yes, do as I say!"

press "no", spend the rest of the day trying to figure out how to install something and it doesn't work, so give up eventually and wait for someone to solve it for you on some tech help forum

press "yes" and spend the rest of the day/week trying to revert your system to a semblance of working condition, with no ground gained otherwise

I've never seen a problem on my Win either.

Not as if it's what I usually do but when I do go for new AAAshit does it usually just werk these days? Conversely, is there anything particular when it comes to older stuff that just won't work no matter what workarounds you use?
My gaymen PC was already built with being pozzed with Windows taken into account since I have a Linux laptop for srsbsns, but even then I'm not sure I'd want to subject it to W11+.
It's also to a great part (possibly and hopefully uninformed, though I'm pessimistic) fear of future Windows versions interfering with piracy and the likes.

It wasn't the whole OS, just the DE. The problem was iirc that some sort of packaging mistake from the Pop team put steam has incompatible with their own DE. I'm not entirely sure, but it was an issue that was quickly resolved with an updated ISO and a simple update to the apt package list. Still shite.

that this action would remove their desktop environment

it shouldnt though, its just installing steam
how are you okay with that

I'm not ok with that, if something like that happened on my Arch system I would be pissed... but I also wouldn't fucking say yes to it either since it gave me a warning on what it was about to remove.

Happened once on a shitty meme distro and was fixed in literal hours

High chance

Besides, it didn't even brick your system, only uninstalled the DE. You can literally reinstall the DE and fix it in one command.

You can tell this guy is a libertarian judging by the fact that he thinks this is normal and fine.

Never use Linux b4

Follow yt video to set up dual boot

Dual boot to an Arch distro

Install Steam with 0 issue

man I must be the luckiest guy in the world

I'm not entirely sure, but it was an issue that was quickly resolved with an updated ISO and a simple update to the apt package list. Still shite.

Quite a massive oversight coming from a company that sells devices with PopOS pre-installed. I'm glad I made the switch to Cachy and it's been buttery smooth ever since.

How is Linux considered "secure" when someone can just walk up to your machine and obliterate it with a single command?

I second Nobara. Fedora will work too, but might be a bit more effort for certain things.

On windows a simple PowerShell script can just self-elevate itself to super admin
How is that "secure?

Like what? I recently installed Fedora and all the problems have gone away. Like h264 works out of the box.

engineers design a building

one of the doorframe ends up being critical support column the building's integrity

attempting to open the door will collapse the building

the door is also the only way to enter the building

it's ok though, they left a warning sign that says "Are you sure you want to open this door" on the door handle?

It's the user's fault for opening the door, which caused the building to collapse

Package managers will sometimes ask you to remove other packages and their dependencies when they find conflicts with package you're going to install, most usual example is 2 different versions of the same package. But package managers are not smart and will remove any conflicting package regardless of its use and role. In linus case it cascaded to the desktop environment.
Apparently it could have been avoided by running an OS update first or using a more up-to-date install image that didn't have the "bug".
He didn't know better but pop os being a user friendly distro going to terminal to install steam should have prompted him to do qome googling instead of tinkering.

It's both user and Pop team's fault for this happening, holy shit do you retards always say yes to every warning that pops up?

>It's the user's fault for opening the door

Correct. They should have sought alternative means of entry.

b-but I said it was the only way to enter the b--

I guarantee that building has windows.

Fine unless you want to play multiplayer with anticheat (and even then, only the competitive slop is usually broken). You're stuck with only playing CS2 or Dota2 in that case.

Linux is not user friendly, true. But it always irks me when I see an adult male raise his palms instead of troubleshooting.

Let me try to explain the issue in simple terms.

There should not be a pop up that nukes your system as a part of any installation, ever.

Of course.
But why would you say yes to it?

I think mainteners of user friendly distros should go the immutable/atomic way so that breaking os like this wouldn't happen should a dumb user run it.

gun allows the user to blow his brains out

It's the fault of the user

Since SeamOS is Linux based, can't you just install that on your PC as an additional OS for just gaming purposes, while you use regular Linux for work related stuff?

2cejdj9.jpg - 396x303, 11.17K

Do windows users always say yes when they get a popup about file deletion and then complain that they lost valuable documents?

Steam os is not officially released on PC and only supports a limited range of hardware. Bazzite OS is the closest thing to it.

No, but if they did, we'd mock them just the same.

deletes a package that can be reinstalled with 1 command

nukes the system

I bet you reinstall windows every time auto-update breaks your drivers.

but the government IS spying on me and there are DEFINITELY glowies in my fucking walls

see

I just use Mint
Not sure why they got Linus to use such a complicated distro

someone tell valve to make their os for desktop

The thing is PoP OS is just as user friendly as mint, was made for gaming, and is made and maintained by a company that sells laptops and gaming laptops running linux.
As far as OS choice he picked the right one and is not to blame at least not entirely.

Unironically that's how Democrats want it to work, legally. It's stupid as fuck.

It's Arch with an immutable system and a special version of KDE that is designed to work with the steam deck.

Ok but clearly it's not user friendly if someone fucks up installing steam

So windows users are basically democrate votebase? No wonder they love tranny flag in they/their start menu.

Yeah agreed 100%

Dual booters know the pain. Every time I boot into windows I want to blow my brains out. OS takes 15 minutes to not be sluggish delayed ass, and even then it's still slower than Linux, meaning while on Linux I can go from the boot menu to being logged in in 30 seconds, and that's with typing in 2 separate passwords.

It's in a really good state now. Most everything that isn't gigantic garbage has their anti-cheats Linux compatible. Performance wise it's either marginally better or marginally worse than windows. Most games launch without a hitch, but brand new titles may need a launch arg or 2 to run smoothly or launch. It's easy enough to meander through. If you have any issues launching a game you just head to ProtonDB and copy paste.

Overall I recommend at least giving it a shot. I've gone full send on Linux for a couple years now with no regrets. Now Microsoft can't lock me out of my own fucking computer anymore.

5090 owner here
Besides sleep and suspending shitting the bed it works perfectly you'll need to add steam arguments to use things like forcing DLSS 4 on older games but you can just copy and paste it from another game. Mago HUD works like revra tuner and you can OC or undervolt with lact. Everything is similar yet different and every game that gave me shit runs like shit on windows too see monster hunter wilds.
Use a rolling release distro and you're good
Also you need to configure feral game mode to utilize your cpu if it's X3D

UAC and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
