Thoughts on 999?

Thoughts on 999?

Top 3 VN ever. I personally like VLR more tho

I get that—VLR definitely expands the storyline and gameplay a lot, and the flowchart system is super convenient. But 999 hits different with that claustrophobic tension and creepy atmosphere. Also, the twist involving the morphogenetic fields still blows my mind.

sex with alice and lotus
that is all

VERY Kino, and like the other anon said VLR is an absolute MASTERPIECE.
I also recommend Danganronpas highly, and dont listen to the retarded DR haters out here, it's a great series.
Hundred Line defense academy is also kino as fuck

DR is slop but good slop with very occasional moments of pure kino like 2-4/5

the sequel would've been 3x as good if zero the 3rd had more presence beyond the first third of the game

greatest love story ever written

Loved 999 and loved VLR, but i couldn't stick with DR, It felt too simple in the plot and characters, and the walkable part was just tedious as fuck. Should I give it a second chance? 999 plot was always good, so does VLR, but DR felt like a chore for at least the first 5 hours.

autismkino

this and ghost trick tricked (heh) me into thinking I was into VNs but really I was just into 2 really good games not VNs as a genre.

999

Best horror

VLR

Best puzzles

ZTD

Best memes

I hated the ending and the twist
i think it's poorly written and overdone

My entry point into VNs and escape room puzzles. Fun times. VLR was also pretty good.

ZTD is best nothing, it's an embarrassment

it's very good, i would say a solid 9/10

Top 3 VN ever.

read more vns, this shit isn't even top 25 lmao

llm post
based
vlr is worse in every aspect
nds or pc version?

this said, it's a vn for people who hate vns, it goes into the same bin of aa, dr, etc...

are we really going to pretend like those threads weren't full of delta posting when ZTD came out?

mindhack.png - 1000x563, 509.55K

ztd was more fun____________________

the only good uchikoshi game

It's shit but that's exactly what lenda itself to memes. I'm pretty sure 90% of the series' memes come from ZTD alone.

I can smell your virginity from here

i'm afraid you're either smelling yourself or you have to get your nose checked lil bro

I can tell from your previous post with 100% certainty you are a anime waifu fag with 0 taste

nds or pc version?

nds
yes it was ingenious use for the hardware
still didn't like it

have to flip the DS over for the sudoku

morphogenetic sorrow blasting

June’s crying panicked face in the background

Actual cinema

welp you got it wrong again, better luck next time (also phi is the best girl)

it kinda sucks that there's no definitive version. replaying that shit 5 times is a chore and the pc version is completely botched because of the ending

Could you please give me some VN recommendations? I played 999, it was aight.

dont listen to the retarded DR haters out here, it's a great series.

i love DR because the atmosphere but you're insane if you think the entire series is great. 2 introduce matrix shit. the anime retroactively made 2 a POS. 3 has by far the worst ending. i dunno why people love 2 so much.

muramasa

he's gonna recommend you cringe romance anime emo VNs, watch

kek
ty

yeah If I have to replay I it would be through my 3ds or even emulation just for the sake of it

It's aight

Dropped it immediately.
VNs are generally all garbage aside from Hotel Dusk, you should just play that instead. That's the good stuff.

super mid and forgettable, even aa4 was better

Kino, but VLR is significantly better and my personal favorite visual novel ever.

ZTD is a didaster but it is at least a funny disaster.

but DR felt like a chore for at least the first 5 hours.

No shit.. Danganronpa 1 is like a 30 HOUR game, play more you faggit, 5 hours is absolutely nothing yet. DR2 is even longer around 50 hours, and V3 is even longer than that with the massive amount of content.

it's no use, you were born a shitter

unfair.png - 536x267, 53.28K

It’s motivations are… complex.

Bro I was hooked min 1 on 999 and VLR, DR felt so fucking vanilla ass death games series, im not going to try 10 hours just to see if the plot get better or not, because it wasnt intriguing, nor the characters interestings, and the walkable part was just a waste of time. At least 999 has some fucking puzzles to have fun, DR was primarily a walking simulation.

I wish there was a version with both the dual screens as well as the route tree and VA (nip), the port does a lot that's nice but the twist and final puzzle are ruined

DR is a hardcore vn for nowadays zoomers

really makes you think...

The final puzzle broke me. As good as the remake improved virtually everything, it doesn't do the final puzzle justice like the NDS version does. One of the best VNs on the DS line hands down.

Raging Loop
Sekimeiya
Paranormasight

I remember being a young teenager and staying up all night just totally engrossed in the game, then the Sudoku ending blew my mind. Fun game.

I have never played any other game in the series.

Funny thing is after I finish 999, hotel dusk is next. I got filtered by something retardedly simple in both games then when I revisited 999 I stomped every puzzle without effort so I imagine hotel dusk will be the same

In my defense, my last VN was Saya no Uta and I was hooked min 1 with that game too, the plot was intriguing as fuck, and the characters were great. My main problem with DR was that, plain characters (at least in the beginning) with just typical anime tropes. The setting was fun but not much original or intriguing as other "death games" stuff. And the walkable part was just a waste of time, just let me read whatever I need to read, but stop justifiying the walkable part of the game other than a waste of time.

"puzzle" game for retards

What's a "puzzle" game for geniuses?

saya is another mid entry-level vn because it's 6 hours long. i'm not trying to dab on you, but we are on Anon Babble so keep that in mind. actually good vns are all 50 hours+ and at least 80% of those slow as fuck, that's how this medium works

if you have problems with this then stuff like personas, sentinel 13, and other dialogue heavy games might be more enjoyable for you then "real" vns

ty ty!

baba is you free dlc

The only 3 I want to try out.
I already played pretty much the rest that's available in english.
Hope I don't get disappointed.

Thanks, but let me ask you one last thing. Does the characters and the plot in DR1 get more interesting? Like, better subplots, motivations, better context, or its just "who's gonna die next" thing all over the game? Thanks for your time anon, take care!

any puzzle game that doesn't give you the answer before it lets you solve it

i haven't played dr, only aa and zero escapes, sorry (i liked all of them but they are all FAR from what vns really are)

If they didn't have this god tier shit twist and a proper ending would ZTD actually be good?

Only the atmosphere was great in Hotel Dusk. Everything else was mid, to be honest.

Is using the route guide from the remake cheating? I’m on DS and got one of the normal endings, axe and sub endings

best girl coming through

file.jpg - 252x181, 13.29K

Raging Loop is very good but doesn't quite stick the landing at the end.

Sekimeiya is great but *very* plot driven, the characters aren't bad but they very much exist to serve the plot.

Paranormasight is just a very solid entry level visual novel. It doesn't try to break new ground or be too deep - it tells its story well, with a clean art style while introducing you to neat mechanical elements of the medium.

whore put shoes on

raging loop

overrated reddit tier trash

It's below 9000

DR was primarily a walking simulation.

This fag AGAIN proves he barely played the game and he thinks he has any rights in providing his opinion.
Shut yer ass up and play all the class trials THEN you can blabber about your conclusion.

read more vns, this shit isn't even top 25 lmao

It is a perfectly condensed package that has enough content and routes to build its universe and doesn't overstay its welcome. Reaching the true ending leaves you satisfied but still wanting for more. Perfect character design and style, good graphics, music is okay but it builds the atmosphere very well, perfect dialogue-gameplay balance. If you ask a vnigger for better vns he will list some 150+ hour powerpoint where characters aren't even animated and the same 3 backgrounds and tracks are repeated all through the game. Just writing isn't everything.

This.
Raging loop is CHEAP (literally, barely has any fucking backgrounds worth a shit, or decent CGIs) and extreeeemely long for the sake of being long and literally bored me to sleep more than a dozen times.
Fuck this piece of trash, avoid Raging Loop at ALL costs, or you'll hate VNs for the rest of your life

too bad the "gameplay" sections are god awful trial and error crap

Maybe, but the overall package of ZTD was just a confusing clusterfuck, it's like giving you pieces of the puzzle in a random order in your normal playthrough and THEN taking a massive shit in your face with that ending.
Oh and let's not forget the ABYSMAL animations in that game. Naah, even if the ending was kino and great, the overall game (the 99% of it) kinda sucked desu

It was fucked up of Akane to disappear on him after everything

jumpy.png - 604x790, 659.52K

Billions would die if she didn't.

If you ask a vnigger for better vns he will list some 150+ hour powerpoint where characters aren't even animated and the same 3 backgrounds and tracks are repeated all through the game.

a 150h vn can have exponentially more impact than a 20h one, which is the whole point. if you consider the playtime then yeah, saya is peak for being 6 hours long, same goes for 999 and aa3 which clock around 20h.

but a vn of 50, 100, 150, etc... is just on another level, it's hard to find something similar even here on Anon Babble

Hello I am Zero I would like to play a gaem

Actually I made you play this game to save a life

I am Zero I am going to have you play death game

I did it to save the world I'm the good guy you see

I am Zero this time I am the villain for sure

I did it to give you your happy ending because I love you all :)

It's good, unfortunately everything that came after it sucks.
Transitioning to 3D was a massive fucking mistake.

Kino

nooooo my series NEEDS a villain

Thanks for your time anon, take care!

wtf is this lovey dovey behavior in Anon Babble out of all places....?
Anyway not him, but DR1 isnt just class trials and "who dies next" for the whole game, there's an existing overall bigger plot, but saying what it is would be a major spoiler/twist. It's revealed near the end and it's much further expanded on in the sequels.
The class trials/murders is just a small part of the main plot and serves as gameplay

Is any of the science legit or is it all nonsense?

Yeah I jumped here from another universe just now

Bother someone until they let you into their room

Be a pushy dick with them until they tell you their life story

It's all somehow magically connected to a case gone cold from years ago

Repeat with every guest until the underwhelming mystery is finally solved

Yeah atmosphere was good but Last Window was better

But a 50 hour VN is still only going to have 20 hours of plot, they just stretch it out and pad it with tons of SoL crap. I've never read a VN over 20 hours that wasn't horribly paced and half filler.

Great but VLR is a masterpiece

Trash

But a 50 hour VN is still only going to have 20 hours of plot, they just stretch it out and pad it with tons of SoL crap.

there's a reason why 30 hours of sol crap is in there, instead of being a simple 20h long plot only. that's exactly what i'm talking about. like imagine steins;gate without the first half: it would've been shit. yet everybody bitches about the slow start without understanding why it's there in the first place

this is of course ignoring slop that has actual useless padding, but nobody is recommending you to play those

the final twist was way worse than anything ztd did. also puzzles were too hard, at least those for the golding file or whatever

Good adventure game its sequel is great too and the 3rd is so absurd its funny.

I played 999 for the first time the day it launched on pure coincidence.

I got one of those R4 cards for the DS and I wanted to test out if it worked. So I went to a ROM website and because it was alphabetically ordered 999 was on the top of the list as new releases.

I was 16 years old at the time in 2010. I got in completely blind, not even knowing the genre let alone story.

I started it up to test the card but it was so gripping I didn't let it go. I didn't sleep for 3 days straight and got all endings in a single playthrough.

When I finished it I got a form of depression that I still remember to this day 15 years later. It was the feeling that I will NEVER experience a story of the same caliber in my life ever again.

Worst is that this is actually true. I'm 31 years old now, a parent and a physicist (which the game largely inspired me to major in as a directionless teen) I have never experienced a story like this again. I've read close to a thousand books, most visual novels and almost all games released between 1998 and ~2012 yet there was nothing that came close.

VLR was still good but it wasn't on the same level as well as being more predictable, less concise and relying on the next entry to resolve plot threads which got fumbled in the third entry.

It's fucking insane how much this game has occupied my mental space over by now half of my life.

spoiler

Holy filtered, that's exactly what made vlr so good.

I'd like to play Hundred Line Defense Academy but want to know how much Uchikoshi was involved. Did he write most of the thing, or is it just mostly Kodaka DR nonsense?

no it's retarded and also full of plothole (i.e. water reflections)

13 Sentinels
Remember 11
Root Double

Uchi has been reusing the same twist since ever17

Hundred Line is almost only Kodaka. Uchikoshi has essentially a corner of the game that is dedicated to his usual nonsense, which can be ignored if you really want to (it's not part of the main plot)

none of it is nonsense. Most of it are real hypothesis or at the worst based on dubious research papers that are controversial but not dismissed by the time the stories came out. No straight up crackpot or schizo pseudoscience. But they are dialed to 11 and exaggerated for story reasoning.

True, but 999 was the only one where he actually executed it well and had the pacing perfected. Ever17 was a fucking slog for me to 100%

Uchikoshi has essentially a corner of the game that is dedicated to his usual nonsense, which can be ignored if you really want to (it's not part of the main plot)

Slasher?

Awesome game
Awesome story
Horrible last puzzle

chicken sandwich
kick the can

Uchikoshi fucking owes me good games.

Can anybody find Ryuki chasing the square head comedian webm for me, i want to see IT one more time:(

I LOVED 999 and VLR and enjoyed Ever17 and Fate/stay night. I also liked The world Ends with you and (to a lesser extent) steins;gate VN.

I really disliked danganronpa and muvluv trilogy (I finished both of them because people kept telling me how I would supposedly like them)

What are some other visual novels or games that I would love?

My problem with vns like steins;gate is that they're only impactful because they stockholm syndrome you into liking their characters by forcing you to spend 30 shit hours with them. They aren't actually well written or likable on their own merits for the most art.

please look forward to the next game!

Exactly and 999 has the exact amount of emotional weight and "punch" to it despite it having amazing pacing and a fast moving, concise plot.

Why can't other VNs do this?

Really cool concept and characters, but dragged down by too much sci-fi mumbo jumbo and a terrible ending.

What was the one VN with a bunch of different characters on a island?

999 - 6/10
VLR - 9/10
ZTD - 1/10

Best game in the series. VLR has much flatter characters and feels like it's trying too hard to be Danganronpa (or at least present itself that way on a surface level). ZTD is just dumb.

Danganronpa 2, it was garbage.

No, but if some retard would've been tricked into thinking the game was any good "LOLZ MIND HACK" was the final nail in the coffin.

Zero Time Dilemma is the best of the three because it stops taking itself seriously and just embraces the retardation.

THE DOG KILLED HIM?!

0.jpg - 480x360, 11.75K

game gives you a timer to answer at gunpoint

the correct answer is letting the timer run out or saying "I don't know"

I'm still mad.

I hate Uchikoshi and his games so fucking much.
I already preordered new AI, just to see how that fucker fucked it Up this time.

Complex motives

999 kind of tricks you with its anime aesthetics because the actual writing isn't very anime at all. It reads more like michael crichton characters. Very mature and actually well developed, not two dimensional and multi-faceted.

That really catches you off guard and makes twists come out of nowhere as you never expect anime characters to have this amount of depth to them, as they never really do.

They toned this down in VLR where the writing feels far more "anime" or "light novel". I think this is precisely why VLR is so divisive. Half of the people think it's an improvement in writing because it feels more anime, like danganronpa which the target demographic of games looking like that wants. But the other half expected the cool juxtaposition of 999 to be continued in its sequel (like me) and were disappointed.

I mean it was still enjoyable but the Luna bird lamination ending was extremely sappy in the most over the top anime way ever.

Danganronpa pushed it so much towards anime it became "ironic weeb" levels and I just couldn't stomach it.

999 is legitimate literature and I sometimes which it never had an anime artstyle because that is a limiting factor to the audience it could have reached. I genuinely think it would have gained a mainstream audience if it was somehow represented differently while keeping the writing and pacing the same.

Great puzzles, great story, marathon sex with Akane.

She fucks you over in ZTD

Uchi worst game isn't ZTD or AI 2
It's Punch Line

t. BTFO by Hashimoto

how much does enjoying 999 involve messing around with all the different ending branches?

She fucks you over in every game.
Total akane death

almost only Kodaka.

Damn. Oh well.

Yeah, and I want to fuck her over and over. Such is life.

VLR characters felt so much flatter to me.

Sigma is basically just "Dude, sex. XD" most of the time

barely anything is revealed about Phi, who swings wildly between being cooperative and being a contrarian on a dime

Dio's one personality trait is being an asshole

Luna is alright

Quark's one character trait is being a child

K is the most inconsistent character because he's literally two characters

Clover became a dumbass after 999

Alice is just a bitch non-stop

Tenmyouji is also alright, but also swings wildly between being cooperative and being a contrarian on a dime

I don't understand how Carlos was invested in Junpei and Akane's relationship. By the end of that game, after everything they put him through, I would've completely understood if he just told them to eat shit.

VLR characters are one-note but what's really good about them is their relationship betwee eachother and what they think on other people relationships/aligances that stimulate your mirror neurons.

Dio's one personality trait is being an asshole

If nothing else I found it refreshing that the asshole character actually was just an asshole acting on his own personal motives for once and the "twist" was finding out that no, he was not going to redeem himself or have a pity party backstory.

They literally had to dumb down the writing in VLR because most of 999 flew over the (japanese) heads. 999 was only popular in the west. It actually worked and VLR sold more in Japan but still barely broke even.

Japanese people are fucking autists and if characters aren't 1D caricatures that exactly fit their looks they will not get into it.

Man... Imagine if 999 was a gigantic hit and all anime and visual novels started writing deeper characters. Instead the entire anime industry is complete and utter garbage in 2025 to an extent I didn't even deem possible.

I will admit: he's at least the most entertaining character in the game.

To be fair, you could say the same about Ace. He does try to have a pity party backstory, but Junpei tells him to eat shit and duct tapes his mouth.

They literally had to dumb down the writing in VLR because most of 999 flew over the (japanese) heads.

I thought they hated it because it was too scary for them which is why VLR had to tone everything down

Ok so I gave Clover the clover and told her not to give up, went with her annd ance and the fucking bitch still got me, what am I doing wrong? Was I supposed to ask seven about ice 9?

Paranormasight

the ending of this game is so fucking ass

999 had a bad case of:

Climbing stairs

Out of fucking nowhere "hey did you know 9/11 was an inside job, and..."

"Damn I'm glad this 9/11 triva just came in handy litterlly 5 minutes later for a major plotpoint"

Ace is a legit psychopath that only pulls out the "pity party story" because he sees it as his only chance to manipulate himself out the pinch he's in.

Dio is just shadow the hedgehog "not my problem" disingenuous retard which in itself is not well written, just entertaining from a meta perspective of pleasing the readers of the story.

I guess the difference is one of them is just outwardly a dick and so you assume you're getting bait and switched, while the other one pretends to play nice and only reveals their real personality in the endgame.

But he wasn't in your face about it, it was a twist.
Dio on the other hand is an asshole since the start, nothing else behind him and it is surprising in a meta sense that the first impression is the only correct one and you should never give him a chance.
It's the exact opposite to Luna, who might seem too nice to be true, but she just is that way and betraying her makes you deserve the ending you get.

Was I supposed to ask seven about ice 9?

Yes

STOP BULLSHITTING ME

999 kind of tricks you with its anime aesthetics because the actual writing isn't very anime at all

Very mature and actually well developed, not two dimensional and multi-faceted.

That was something I thought about as well.
On my first playthrough I went into it already expecting to hate Lotus and Clover because I was sure they would be your stereotypical

sly older woman who's constantly flirting and jiggling her boobs around and treats everything around her as a game

japanese cutesy high school girl who's obsessed with you and treats you like an older brother but also as a romantic interest

But I ended up pleasantly surprised how they weren't like that at all.

Lotus.jpg - 2553x3513, 1.13M

Are you fucking kidding me I HATE THE ICE FUCKING FREEZER
I’ve done this freezer 4 times now, I’m going insane

befriend Clover

encourage Clover with the leaf words

prove your undying loyalty to Clover

but Clover still kills you because you didn't listen to Santa and Akane blabber on about magic water in the freezer

The true ending route is weird.

Have you replayed it? The trivia actually makes sense because that information was on purpose seeded by Akane & Co to ensure the sudoku puzzle at the end was solved. It was a perfectly curated path where everything happens perfectly to save everyone. It is the one time that actually makes sense.

too scary

I don't get this, nips constantly consume edgy and gory media. The descriptions in 999 are no worse than what they actually show in other LNs.

Va-11 Hall-a
Wolfstride
Pyre
Danganronpa (if you like me like dumb jap humor)

The acid shower in ZTD was too much to be honest.

The House in Fata Morgana and Remember11.

The 2 greatest VNs of all time.

I know, but when you have a random woman in a life or death situation start yapping about "heavy water" or some shit you either present it as a weird thing like "Oh, why did i say that?" to plant the seed that something is afoot or it comes out as full schizo.

I don't know if it was actually the reason nips didn't play it but it's the reason given for why VLR cut the gore and turned the death traps into lethal injection.

Time for #5 then

UH-HUH? AND HOW DID HE DO THAT?

be Delta

mind control Carlos/Diana to press the button

wheel yourself into the shower

willfully sit there and melt to death in at least two timelines

Why did he do it?

You need to sell me on them bro, Saya No Uta had an interesting premise but was the biggest pile of shit I've had the displeasure to read.

Because that was the future he saw
lol
lmao

Do the other versions of 999 let you skip this? I’m still sticking with DS but am curious because this shit sucks doing these puzzles blind finding the right route combo

NTA but I actually agree with his reply, please sell it on me. Also I agree with his Saya No Uta statement. Made me mad because of the wasted potential that just turned out to be pedo waifu slop.

I don't know MuvLuv since i haven't touched it, but while i could stand Danganronpa it is not the same thing as 999 at all.
It relies a lot on style, spectacle, and character design, but the writing is weaker.

I think I remember people saying the rereleases use the same flowchart system VLR does but I'm not sure, I never played them.

this is fine when the seemingly random trivia is coming from characters like santa/june, who are specifically telling junpei that information in an effort to steer him towards certain paths. on the other hand, lotus randomly informing you about prosopagnosia makes absolutely no sense; this information is vital in order for junpei to deduce clover's killer, but lotus:

doesn't know if anyone on the ship has prosopagnosia

isn't even aware of the true purpose of the game, therefore this is indeed just some random trivia she gives to junpei that coincidentally is crucially relevant to one of the other participants

Why did they change Junpei’s personality in all 3 games?
And Memories off translation when?

not him but it's kinda hard to sell fata morgana without spoilers.
just go in blind.

The third game is retarded. But Junpei being bitter in VLR as an old man absolutely makes sense in the context of his backstory and perceived betrayal. Also people change with time. I'm a completely different person now compared to when I played 999 a decade and a half ago for example.

Just grab it on Steam and that's it? Or do I need to know anything to get into it beforehand?

C O M P L E X

Man I'm so fucking starved for good VNs. I know the genre is essentially dead, but there is something special about VNs that can't be reached by regular novels or videogames. It's the exact combination of both mediums that unlocks something special.

I tried this piece of shit and gaslighted myself into liking it because of how fucking starving I was.

VNs were replaced by CRPGs. People play Disco Elysium instead.

I'm making a VN and I'll start to shill it on Anon Babble as soon as I'm done with making it if it's of any interest.

there's a mod that'll give you access to bonus stuff not on the steam version and adds 16:9 resolution. (similar to the 07 mod for umineko)
i didn't use it so i can't say much about it.

what have you played so far?

Try Raging Loop

visual novel about people stuck on an island with no memory. It's not Danganronpa 2

Steins;Gate is praised by people who love the novelty of a chuuni MC and time travel gimmicks. In most respects it's overrated and derivative of other better stories.

I wish more VNs did Revelation Mode

Nobody cares. I also made a VN and nobody played it.

I played Emio the last week.

I actually like CRPGs too but they are different. CRPGs focus on your choices and interactivity with the world way more and the story is there to facilitate interactivity and self-expression.

VNs are more focused on the story and the interactivity is there to more deeply explore the world, setting, story and characters. It's fundamentally different.

it's overrated

It's really not.

derivative of other better stories

It's among the best visual novels and has that reputation for a good reason.

You didn't shill it hard enough, I'm sure someone will pick it up in this thread.

how good is fata morgana? is it on par with the greats or just "pretty good"?

Let's see Paul Anon's VN

I think fate/stay night is underrated nowadays because it was so popular back in the day and because it is now a huge franchise. But people forget that the original visual novel is extremely good and aged terrifically.

It's kind of like Death Note in which it's so good that people just assume others have watched it and thus is never recommended as it's a no-brainer.

Play fate/stay night if you haven't. It's brilliant.

Is that game that came out recently that Uchi fucking hack worked on good? What was its name again?

they stockholm syndrome you into liking their characters by forcing you to spend 30 shit hours with them

you could say exactly the same thing about 999 except it's 20 hours instead of 30

inb4 uchikoshislop is good writing

max-stern.itch.io/mistalone

It was a good learning experience. I'll make another story game after finishing my defense game.

nta but at least I cared about the characters in 999. I couldn't be arsed to care about Okabe or Kurisu or anyone else in S;G.

sovlful art but a bit too on the nose

Uchikoshi won the literary lottery with 999. He recycles most of his story beats and concepts but with 999 he (i assume accidentally) mixed them up in such a way that it became true literature and it became something greater than the sum of its parts.

I couldn't be arsed to care about Okabe or Kurisu or anyone else in S;G.

that's not vns fault, you just aren't otaku enough

with 999 he (i assume accidentally) mixed them up in such a way that it became true literature

lmao no, keeps writing the same slop over and over, it's just that 999 got popular in the west for whatever reason and now it's babby's first vn, therefore LE GOOD

It is the vns fault for writing shallow characters. Kurisu's appeal is completely surface level, being a tsundere that uses imageboards is 90% of her personality.

I have the same exact problem wih Urobuchi Gen.
Loved Madoka Magica but everytrhing else I read from hif feels written by an edgy teen.

I keep buying the AI Somnium games and hope he makes a Zero Escape 4.

switch 2 version is a game key code

Feel bad man. Hopefully the Switch 1 version is complete and has a Switch 2 upgrade.

Saya no Uta is sold because of waifufags that like Saya herself or people that enjoy the specific kind of edgy Urobutcher writes.
Under what context was it recommended to you if you liked 999?
It's not really a mystery, the characters are miserable and mostly shallow and your only 4 choices are

Do you want to go crazy (ending 1)

Do you want to be knowingly evil now but love your waifu?

Do you not want to be completely retarded (ending 2)

Do you want to be completely retarded? (ending 3)

As a teen I liked Kurisu. As an adult I like Mayuri far more. It's a good litmus test for one's maturity.

yeah on akane's personality is so deep... she's... uhm... a childhood friend.... uhm... yeah

I asked Seven about Ice-9 and suddenly she doesn’t want to murder me, what the actual fuck were they thinking?

that's not vns fault

How is it not the vns fault if his issue is with Steins;Gate's writing? Personally I found the story to be serviceable but nothing special so it was kind of a disappointment for me too.

You're supposed to play the remaster and pick the flowchart.

I kept hearing the name of the VN thrown around every time the VN discourse was brought up in any site, plus I've seen a few images of human saya and heard the whole "MC sees everything as meat".
But every time it was paraded as this landmark of VNs that i later tried it.

Uchikoshi is unironically less of a hack than the writer of the Science Adventure series.

it's top 3 vn's personally (might be my favourite not sure)
just play it.

hundred line is poopoo imo.
loads of filler and the main route is pretty poor. uchi's corner of the game is story locked behind a bunch of meme routes, i didn't bother to play that far.

if you really like the bonus shit from danganronpa you'll probably like it.

how good is fata morgana?

it's a no-bullshit straight up masterpiece of a tragedy. perfect ost, perfect character writing. first half-ish of the story is building up mystery and then it's non-stop gut-punches. maybe i'm over exaggerating it, but i don't know what else to tell someone who asks that kind of question beyond restating what you can read on the store page's synopsis of the game. look at the art, listen to the ost and decide for yourself whether you're interested.
for me fatamoru is an easy 10/10 because it does right what it tries to do. maybe something worth mentioning is that it's devoid of the usual anime tropes and humor. there's almost nothing in it that particularly makes it a japanese product. the only thing that keeps it from feeling like an EVN is it being actually good

it's a badly written misery porn for people who don't like vns. only the music is good (though some retarded decided to put vocal ost in an unvoiced vn so shit's disctracting af)

do not play this unless you're a tranny

I've never read Fata Morgana but you sound like a retard.

I've never read Fata Morgana

i wish i was you, worst 30h of my consooming life

in a row?!

This is a pretty niche VN which I really enjoyed. It's literally written by a tranny though so that might turn you off from it.

It's about (You) coming across a North Korean generational spaceship in the far future and finding everyone is dead on the ship and talking to the onboard AI to figure out what happened on the ship.

Also just completely ignore the sequel which tries to be "Tumblr quirky" and goes all-in on fanservice.

uchikoshi cocksuckers are cucks

sasuga

It's best for getting a Plat trophy, you just have to play the fucking game.

True, even S;G was just mediocre to me. On the other hand a lot of the vns people are complaining about in the thread I actually liked.

Memories off translation when?

Just learn Japanese honestly, MAGES will never localize it and I wouldn't hold my breath for a fan TL either. There isn't even a 12Riven translation yet and that game is far more relevant in terms of untranslated Uchi shit.

In most respects it's overrated and derivative of other better stories.

if anything, steins;gate is underrated if i were to use the literal meaning of the term.
not even its fans appreciate it for half of what it is because an overwhelming majority have either not played the rest of the science adventure series or are not even aware that steins;gate was written with the series context in mind.
then there's like a shitton of canon side material that nobody cares to read as well. most stop at steins;gate 0, when it's ironically one of the worst pieces of sciADV side content.
s;g definitely does have an overinflated popularity and receives an unjustified amount of praise. but the counter-proportional hate of it does not have a strong footing to go off either

what did she mean by this

Try actually playing the game and you'd know she's joking and the number is actually ZERO
Because it's foreshadowing

Most people agree that S;G is the only entry in the series worth reading.

uhm actually the digital root of 18 is 9 so....

1+8=9

Don't care about who wrote it, it sounds interesting. But does it work as a self contained story? Because if the sequel is shit as you say and it is require might as well not touch it.

an overwhelming majority have either not played the rest of the science adventure series or are not even aware that steins;gate was written with the series context in mind.

That's why it's overrated especially in comparison to the rest of the series entries.

Yeah it's a completely self-contained story that is complete. There is nothing to write about in the sequel which is one of the reasons it devolves into fanservice.

I just wrote it as a warning in case you finished the first VN which is great and you then decide you might want to try the second one. Don't do it. It's shit.

I think they put all of their passion and soul into this VN. It's really cool and has a unique perspective and style of writing. It might not be your thing but if it clicks you'll really like it. If the premise sounds interesting to you there is already a 90% chance it'll be interesting for you.

your statement prefectly goes in hand with what i said. most people haven't read anything sciadv related besides steing;gate. reading s;g vn over watching the anime adaptation is an achievement by itself for "most people".
and no, reading chaos;head after steing;gate and hating it does not constitutes as you having read all of sciadv and having a perspective.

what i meant to say is that what makes steins;gate a good entry in the series completely goes over most people's heads. so if someone who likes it already were to become aware of the rest of the context, they would hypothetically like it even more, which would in turn make it as if they were "underrating" it before. that was my logic

Don't listen to him, Hundred Line is a pile of dogshit.

nta most sciadv is super mid, they got lucky with s;g (which is unironically kino) but that's it. nothing else is worth reading besides maybe c;c

I don't really care what you have to say about the rest of the series because yes I already tried and dropped C;H. The SG onlys have a point in not pushing any further into the series.

I fucking hate Uchikoshi so much, but i will buy every single one of his games.

nothing else is worth reading besides maybe c;c

c;c is not worth reading without c;h and r;n is not worth reading without c;h and s;g. a;c is not worth reading without fucking everything prior.

they got lucky with s;g (which is unironically kino) but that's it

they got lucky with s;g anime and unlucky with having dogshit marketing. that's actually it.
different sciadv entries provide different kinds of entertainment so that's understandable to not like all of it. but to say that steins;gate is comparatively that superior to the rest of them is just ignorant. it's the same author, writers and themes throughout all of it. all of them are good if they are something you are interested in in the first place.

yes I already tried and dropped C;H

like an open book.

I don't really care what you have to say about the rest of the series

then don't engage. not even once i pushed someone to read them in my posts

real

c;c is not worth reading without c;h and r;n is not worth reading without c;h and s;g. a;c is not worth reading without fucking everything prior.

exactly, the only one that works standalone is s;g

they got lucky with s;g anime and unlucky with having dogshit marketing. that's actually it.

i read s;g before watching the anime btw

but to say that steins;gate is comparatively that superior to the rest of them is just ignorant.

nah, you're just a lil coping contrarian. there's a reason why s;g is one of the highest rated vns everywhere, even outside vndb, yet everything else is outside top 100 (again, except c;c)

the only one that works standalone is s;g

to an extent, yes. also you don't factor in a retrospective value an entry can have. but whatever.
if the point you are really making here is that "if i need to read them in order it means they are bad" then i will simply call you a retard and move on.

you're just a lil coping contrarian.

what do those words even mean here? the point i'm trying to make for the most part is that majority can't really have an opinion on the topic, because they haven't engaged with the subject matter. i'm not saying that every sciadv entry is actually a masterpiece. you are trying to make an appeal to mass opinion while there is no such thing in our case. mass opinion holding s;g in high regard does not translate to the rest of sciadv therefore being abhorrent. why do i have to spell it out?

there's a reason why s;g is one of the highest rated vns everywhere

even if we ignore s;g anime, only fairly recently sciadv entries started getting english releases. also them having horrible anime adaptations certainly didn't help the case.
the order in which you consume the content playing a big role in delivering an entertaining experience just doesn't work in a situation like that. people still read shit out of order when it's actually not a problem now and you are trying to make a point about series popularity reflecting "the truth"? don't make me laugh

if the point you are really making here is that "if i need to read them in order it means they are bad" then i will simply call you a retard and move on.

no i'm saying that EVEN if you read them in order they are still worse then standalone s;g

everything else

that's a lot of cope

It's so frustrating because you KNOW he got real potential but just shits out low effort crap every time instead of making more masterpieces.

I can't believe the top ranked VN streamer is covering goddamn Sekimeiya over literally any other VN.

Uchikoshi was always like this. Even his best work (999) is full of contrivances and stupid horny bullshit. Remember11 was good, but it was done with other writers.

i'm saying that EVEN if you read them in order they are still worse then standalone s;g

apart from the statement not making sense (s;g ∪ the rest < s;g?), that's really bold coming from someone who absolutely did not read them in order (you said yourself that you'd read s;g prior to c;h at the very least).
then again, i don't really care if you don't like sciadv. my confusion is moreso comes from that i don't understand what it is that you see in s;g, if you simultaneously feel that strong about them other entries.
all in all i see that what you are doing is simply being defensive of steins;gate. i haven't even once called it bad, but you do you

VN streamer

isn't that just streaming a movie?

(s;g ∪ the rest < s;g?),

you know what i meant

(you said yourself that you'd read s;g prior to c;h at the very least)

if i played them in order i'd have liked s;g even more

i haven't even once called it bad, but you do you

it's I am who's calling "bad" the other entries

I actually read Chaos Child and it was one of the dumbest things I have ever experienced. All I wanted was the scooby-doo mystery investigation, but then it went into sci-fi fantasy anti-escapism moralizing bullshit that punished the reader for getting invested. Dumbest plot twist I've ever seen, too.

Evangelion also did this thing where it projected their own escapism issues onto the public for some reason. It feels extra patronizing because most of the audience is just adults with a job and family and everything that they end up shitting on for no reason and providing no value to them.

I dropped Ghost Trick halfway, didn't grab me.

if i played them in order i'd have liked s;g even more

the horror.

it's I am who's calling "bad" the other entries

if your goal is to convince me or someone else that they are bad then you've already lost, because i'm not arguing in the favor of their quality. the single long running train of thought that is present in all of my replies up to this point is that yours and most people's opinion on the topic literally do not matter because you don't know what you're talking about. you can say whatever you want

Sometimes on Anon Babble I see threads gloating about shit like Nier Automata (which I actually only finished last year, it was absolute crap) and I wonder just how low the bar is for writing in games.

Ghost Trick has a cool misdirection/ending but by now the 4th wall break has been overplayed to such an extent that it is actually an annoying cliche and a trope of the genre. You did the right thing. I felt like I wasted my time even though I kinda got what got people excited about the story by the end. If you don't enjoy the gameplay the story is not worth suffering through it.

4th wall break

The one that has nothing to do with the actual story? Really?

because i'm not arguing in the favor of their quality

what are you arguing about then? that playing franchises in release order is better? no shit

The ending was fucking retarded beyond belief. Went from a 9 to a 4.

what are you arguing about then?

the following sentence.

but why are you trying to get constructive now? because you certainly wasn't before and "I don't like other entries" is all you've ever said and that's 0 new/useful information as well

Absolute fucking based kamipeakmysterygods.

Man, I'm a millennial. I have no idea what this sentence means.

You're the type of midwit retard who judges good narrative on how surprising the plot twist is, aren't you?

No it's the opposite way, actually. Ghost Trick had no narrative value besides the plot twist (which was good). I'm pointing out how the game isn't worth playing because only the plot twist is good, which isn't good enough to carry the entire story and bad gameplay.

i said there's no point of playing the franchise at all except for steins;gate

oh okay my bad
