Final Fantasy fans hate it for not being turn based

Final Fantasy fans hate it for not being turn based

Character action game fans hate it for not smashing their balls with a hammer hard enough

It was a perfectly fine casual friendly action RPG and you people are utterly insane if you expected anything else.

loyl.jpg - 1604x2040, 637.2K

the most boring side quests ever seen

combat is nothing more than "press X for awesome"

I hate turn based combat but this is literally designed for 5 year olds.

every game is "press X for awesome"

i hate it because it was shit

this game singlehandedly ensured the franchise's demise by being so thoroughly mid.

I hate turn based combat but this is literally designed for 5 year olds.

It's Final Fantasy. It was never aimed at adults.

The thing that gets me is that the supposed "Final Fantasy fan" part of the fanbase is mad because it's not hard enough. Like, when has Final Fantasy ever been hard? Literally never. In the "better games", all you do is spam the confirm button in battle, brain completely off.

hire a DMC combat designer

make the game piss easy

I'm both a turn-based vidya fan and a character action fan, I would've been fine with either approach. I was actually looking forward to this one and they decided to ruin it. Fuck Square, they're keeping Yoko Taro working on some gacha kusoge too.

this is my 3rd favorite ff game

I agree. Everyone I've seen hate on this game expected it to be something it wasn't. For example weeaboos hating it for not being stereotypically anime, and Game of Thrones fans hating that it dropped the factional politics in favor of a very typically Japanese story.
The game is FF to the core, and many of the gameplay complaints people have are true of FF in general, but are exacerbated by the game having a different battle system than the series ever had. It's really only a little bit less of an RPG than FF4, the game which was the blueprint for the series going forward.

I'm both a turn-based vidya fan and a character action fan, I would've been fine with either approach.

The game wasn't made for you. It was made to have mass market appeal to normalfaggots, that's the audience for Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy "fans" make up a tiny % of Final Fantasy game sales. You're all stuck living in the 90's, you don't represent the modern Final Fantasy player.

You have terrible tastes

It's my 4th favorite. 6, 7, 10, 16, and 9 are my top 5 in that order. Final Fantasy is a great series.

I hate it for one Simple reason.
Final Fantasy is about forming a party and controlling all of them.
This cancer of only controlling 1 character started during Crisis Core and then really established itself with Lightning Returns.

IMG_4497.jpg - 616x353, 142.93K

robot response

As an enjoyer of both RPGs and action games I hate it because it sucks at being both of those things. It dropped any illusion that it's a role-playing game, and the gameplay ends up being DmC for dummies.

Grim. I don’t even want to know what your #1 and #2 are.

It was made to have mass market appeal to normalfaggots

But it was piss easy to appeal to both normalfags and character action guys. Just make:

journalist difficulty

normal

"hard"

ULTRA NIGHTMARE HYPER-RAPE HELL FOR AUTISTS

When was Final Fantasy ever deep? It was always spam heal and use your best attack.

Oh ok.

So you have no problem adding easy mode to souls games right?

I'm not going to spend 60 hours on "perfectly fine". get some standards this game is fucking trash

It was made to have mass market appeal to normalfaggots

Which is hilarious given that they enjoy jrpgs like Persona. Maybe instead of trying to pass off a garbage action game as mainline Final Fantasy they should have XVII set in a school with several LI options.

just play stranger of paradise if you want FF but hard

combat is nothing more than "press X for awesome"

My brother in christ, your x button is just your basic bitch combo. It only when you press other buttons is when cool stuff happens

I liked it. It was far more enjoyable than Spider-Man 2 for example. Kind of malding about the GOTY snub in favor of Insomniac's slop

>the most boring side quests ever seen

to play maybe. But they're very good for someone like me who loves the world and its characters

Cooldowns lmao

I hate ff16 because I hate faggots and trannies and I will not support vidya games that try to normalize them

faggots and trannies are all just degenerate freaks and none of them will ever be accepted or considered normal

you are insane if you expect anything other than mediocrity from modern Square

I mean, yeah i guess youre right

pathetic.jpg - 397x397, 22.28K

Sir, are you aware that Final Fantasy XVI is a video game?

Action RPG with over 25 hours of cutscenes

Some sections of the game have 1hour plus cutscenes non-stop giving you zero playtime.

No rpg mechanics

No elemantal weaknesses

Character moveset on Ifrit is more varied than on Clive

Summon powers have cooldown timers

Can only have three Eikon powers active at any one time with two move sets form those Eikon powers

Can only use sword and no other weapons

Singular character and isn't party based in a Final Fantasy game, the first to do so even the spin off FF1 game Strangers of Paradise has a party system.

No inns

No camping

One singular moogle

No overworld

No open world

Map design philosophy is lifted straight from FF14

Exploration is not encouraged or rewarded

Gil is meaningless

Scripted boss fights where you are prevented from killing them so a cutscene can play

Combat music is obnoxious as fuck and plays for the smallest enemy possible

Enemy design encounters outside bosses are also MMO designed where they will stop chasing you 20 feet from their standing position and regain all their healthy

Boss design is lifted from FF14 with raid mechanics, highlighted circles and shapes on the ground to warn you of an incoming attack.

Almost no party interaction or character interaction outside the hub areas

Game is heavily frontloaded with the best part of it being the free Demo.

Kill God is the final boss again.

Ben Starr is now in the better final fantasy game and will be remembered more for voicing Verso than Clive in ff16.

What is enjoyable about the world and its characters? By FF standards they're garbage.

why wasn't Jill a permanent party member and allowed us to switch between them like in FF7R? That alone would have made this game so good.

But the thing is that this game has so many little flaws here and there that prevent it from shining. Too many flaws and bad decisions. You can tell the budget for the game was big, the graphics are amazing, art direction is amazing, music is amazing but when it come to the gameplay and customization there is nothing there and that's why I cannot bring myself to like it.

They went all in chasing a casual audience that will never play this series if the more hardcore gamers and streamers won't like it enough to shill it for free. They had fucking Maximillian on a payroll to shill the game and after the contract was over the first thing he did was trash it, a dude that never talks bad about any game. In a world where Elden Rin is one of the most popular games in recent years and these retards at Square come and pull something like this. So much money poured into the game but forgot about the goddamn fucking gameplay. No party system, no customization, brainless combat, easy as fuck... If they just wanted to make a movie or TV series then they should have partnered with Netflix instead.

RAGEBAIT thread by depressed millennials

Come home white man

all you do is spam the confirm button in battle, brain completely off.

what do you get out of lying?

probably 14 and 15

This game would be so shitposted if it was called ff16

Team Ninja did what SE couldn't do: make a good ARPG Final Fantasy.

I think it was shitposted to death on release which unfortunately dominated discussion more than gameplay and it died out after hype

BULLSHIT

Unfortunately due to a mix of marketing to the wrong demographic and epic game store exclusivity it's destined to die in obscurity

You guys really do not realize how absolutely gorgeous this game is. So much wasted potential and money here... When the action in FF16 ramps up this game is unrivaled in visuals and set pieces that are out of this world and better than anything you have ever seen in this industry. That's why it pisses me off so much the game sucks.

1.jpg - 3840x2160, 523.7K

You guys really do not realize how absolutely gorgeous this game is.

I couldn't care less if the visuals are good if everything else (except soundtrack) is shit. Maybe they should stick to making movies, since they seem to enjoy shoving in dozens of hours of cutscenes in what is an action game.

This, never underestimate contrarians, it was lucky 16 and rebirth exist to get the shitpost

1st is 7 (og) 2nd is 9

the boss fights were ok but general combat in encounters is just cycling cooldowns

The DLC's were the best part of FFXVI because they tried to fix a lot of the issues from the main game, give more rewards, more rpg mechanics, have a party although you couldn't control them at least most of the dlc time Clive was no alone.
Music was great for both pieces of DLC, setting and story too. I don't know if it's because the Director for the DLC's was a different, younger guy or what but they almost feel like a different game especially the Rising Tide DLC.

Why

So much wasted potential and it didn't have to be that way.

1.jpg - 2560x1440, 405.76K

sun beams in my brown looking game is le gorgeous

niggercattle

When the action in FF16 ramps up this game is unrivaled in visuals and set pieces that are out of this world and better than anything you have ever seen in this industr

kys

press x for awesome

So it's 100% a final fantasy game?

The dlc director was one of the other combat designers, guy also headlined dissidia games. The issue with the main game is that the lead director, Takai, is the guy who made ARR (and TLR, sure, but none of that has shown up in any game he's made since) and it has even less options than ARR did without any side content because they didn't think it was appropriate or something. They basically saw what the guy they poached from Capcom was doing and said "hmm yeah this is great we shouldn't have to do anything crazy" and didn't make the rest of the game in a way that complimented it, let a bunch of interns make FFXIV quests, and called it a day

the last 3 mainline FF games were actually so fucking horrible... 13 15 and 16 really killed the franchise for me
if they dont make 17 a return to form i thinks its over for FF

Gil is useless

no inns to rest in

no Tents

no Status effects

no Elements

no Spells

no Items to cure effects or do anything beyond basic buff and healing

no RPG mechanics whatsoever

no damage types whatsoever

"you found 10 bloody hides"

"you found 10 gil"

every single accessory is just "increase damage" or "reduce cooldown"

every single sword is just "increase damage" with zero unique effects or abilities

zero world interactivity, literally nothing to do in the fields except fight trash mobs and fetch quests

can't climb on anything

can't swim in the water

can't jump over anything

this is the game that came after FFXV and FFVII Remake which had all of this

This game exposed yoshit PISS for the fraud that he is. He cannot create anything new, only copy.

HE POSTED IT LMAO, THE GIF WHERE THE PANTHER WHICH IS THE ENTIRE BOSS HAS ALREADY BEEN KILLED IN A FIGHT DESIGNED TO BE EASY IN THE FIRST PLACE.
FUCKING SUB HUMAN COWSHIT EATER YOUR CONCESSION IS ACCEPTED

A FIGHT DESIGNED TO BE EASY IN THE FIRST PLACE.

We already know it's a jrpg

It wasn't made for gamers. Yoshi-P said he wanted subhumans who watched Game of Thrones to play it.

Calm down rajesh, no need to project

16 was pretty good if you also like MMOs.

"he said, calmly"

No, it wasn't. It was a shit game whose best feature is being a strict downgrade from DMC5.

This is fundamentally why FF16 split the fanbase for FF games. It appeals to the MMO story enjoyers of FF14 but not to pretty much anyone else and even then not really because FF14 story enjoyers don't really like playing FF14 they just like watching the characters interact and the story unfolding so the action combat of FF16 confused them.
Two of the biggest FF14 creators gave up playing the game one just before Clive has his second Ifrit fight and the other she gave up at the Titan fight.

FF single player mainline games have a very specific audience and it's really not the MMO crowd. This is what YoshiP fundamentally got wrong when he made the decision for what FF16 would be.

Two of the biggest FF14 creators

Who?

more like they hate it for taking a steaming dump on almost anything that makes FF FF
imagine not having even a fucking party you can control

The only FF games I haven't touched are 13 and 14 and I thought 16 was awesome desu

It's a FF game for FF enjoyers. It's not a game for those who are stuck in the Square Enix days of Final Fantasy, who think that anything that isn't Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy X isn't Final Fantasy.

Genuinely a better game than XVI in almost every capacity.

Arthars played FF16 until the new Clive outfit just before the callback fight against Ifrit.
Zepla gave up playing FF16 at the Titan lost fight.

The bosses in 12 were pretty hard for if you hadn't set your gambits up right.

This game came and went. Surprised Sqeenix is still standing.

It was okay, but the stagger bar was implemented poorly. Let me style on the bosses, make it so there’s a meaningful difference on getting big damage when you do get that stagger at the least.

The only games post-10 I enjoyed are 13-2 and SoP. Everything else, especially 14 and 15, was trash.

Zepla

Zepla hasn't been a XIV creator since Shadowbringers. She's been a Hoyoverse and WoW creator since Endwalker, and she seems to have completely soured on XIV ever since she got mindbroken by TOP.

How has this still not been added to ps plus? FF7 Remake was more successful and got added faster.

Sane people hate it for the boring as fuck story and lame gameplay overall.

She was a FFXIV content creator until December of last year, you're only saying she's not because her videos have been mostly critical since the end of Endwalker.
She was the largest FF14 content creator during FF16's release and didn't complete it so that tells you everything you need to know right there.

I like how a lot of the defenses of the game in this thread amount to "Final Fantasy has always been bad"

It's a FF game for FF enjoyers.

YES A RETURN TO FORM, THE FF ANY FF FANS GLAMORED FOR. SAID NO ONE ABOVE ABOSLUTE ZERO IQ

you're only saying she's not

I'm saying she's not because she became a primarily Hoyoverse and WoW content creator after Shadowbringers, and because she seems to have completely soured on XIV after she got mindbroken by TOP. Dawntrail's MSQ was horrible, but she was out the door even before that.

It's more than the story, the combat in FF16 is hitting cooldowns when they're available just like in MMORPGs. You can chain together attacks as filler instead of all the white attacks being automatic but the entire game revolves around spamming cooldown abilities just like an MMO and there's certain rotations that are better than others for DPS. The side quests are all MMO tier as well. FF16 is a game made for people that like MMORPGs in the same way FF12 and Xenoblade Chronicles are. Put FF16 in front of someone that loves WoW and it'll probably be their favorite Final Fantasy game.

you have really bland taste in music

Final Fantasy games have lots and lots of dialogue.
Leveling individual Eikons and forming a build around them is similar to leveling individual Jobs and forming a build around them.
Elemental weaknesses would hurt your ability to play with the Eikon abilities you like.
If summon powers didn't have cooldown, they'd run off finite MP or would otherwise just have no resource conservation/management/strategy to them. The point is that you use them at the best time.
It doesn't need Inns or Camping, neither works with the game's structure and it's easy to heal otherwise.
The game does feature multiple large interconnected overworld regions.
Most FF games do not have great exploration--FF10, one of the series's all-time classics, has far fewer larger open areas than FF16.
Scripted boss fights have been a thing since FF4.
Every FF game (except 12) has a main battle track you hear constantly, and 16 is one of the few to use dynamic mixes of the area music for when battles kick in during several sequences.
The best part of the game is post-second timeskip.

The rest are valid points.

Yeah you're not reading my post at all I see so there's no conversation here.

That's nonsense. SE is proven again and fucking again that people will buy Turn Based games

BG3

Metaphor

P5

E33

And BG3 definitely sold way more than the recent FF titles if you're going with the whole "but these titles don't sell enough"

I didnt delete anything you brainrot, jannies are just sub humans. Now stop tripling down after being btfoed by a single screenshot you lying, cowardly rat who wasn't even born until the end of 6th gen.

Final Fantasy hasn't been turn based since like 4. Imagine an ATB game with E33's combat to see the difference between ATB and traditional turn based RPGs.

You're deluded if you think these types didn't latch on FF as early as the 90s especially with how absolutely HOMOSSSEXUAL most FF protagonists look

Every single defence you just made is a exactly why FF16 is not fun.
Why are there cooldowns for Eikon abilities especially when around 15 hours into the game all Clive's base attacks are made pointless because they deal so little damage. I'll tell you why you think having cooldowns is a good thing because you have an MMO mindset of preventing free foam combat makes balance easier to control for boss fights.
No other action game has cooldowns for their abilities like FF16 has preventing a player to play their build until a timer has gone down which forces players to burst all their cooldowns at the same time in order to chain combos and that right there stalls combat into 6-15 seconds of spamming basic attacks until cooldowns are reset and then you can burst.
It's such a retarded system only an MMO developer could think of this.

No other action game has cooldowns for their abilities like FF16

That's because it's an action RPG where your specific builds and strategies are rewarded. Try thinking of something other than spamming "strong attack" ability.

NTA, but sales are the largest reason why they don't want to make turn based games anymore. All their turn based games don't sell as well as FF or KH, and BG3 didn't sell well because it's turnbased, it sold well because of it's characters and meaningful choices. I specifically remember there were a bunch of retards who bought BG3 and got mad that it was a turn based game. Turn based games are my favorite genre, but those that sell well don't sell well because their turn based

I have no particular attachment to either of those games and I thought XVI was complete shit. I always see people argue whether it's a bad game or just a bad FF game, or if it's a bad game of if it's just a bad JRPG or whatever, but it's just a shit game on its own merits.

Yup, likewise. Zepla hasn't been a XIV content creator in literal years.

~~OFFICIAL GUIDE ON HOW TO FIX FF16~~

you beat bahamut

you rape the hot evil women

credits roll

That's it

"why is fire working on ifrit?"

"we've removed elemental resistances because we don't want the players to think"

it was DOA

Did you read my post or did you skim read and fill in the blanks with your own cognitive dissonance?
Your strategies in FF16? What Strategies, you can play the entire game with three Eikons without changing them at all. I played with Phoenix, Garuda and Titan and didn't feel pressured to change at all from the moment I unlocked Titan until I completed the game.
That's not good game design, that right there is proof the lack of elemental weaknesses in FF16 discourages experimentation.
It's something Expedition 33 has done incredibly well with it's Light and Dark, Fire, Ice, Lighting and Earth elementals and encourages experimentation with move sets and buffs.
FF16 does none of that.
I got sprayed by a Malboro and expected to be hit with a string of debuffs, all I got was base physical damage.

the point is they sold well despite being turn based games which SE seems to think is sales poison
Sure I doubt anyone bought E33 just because it was a turn based game, rather for the rest of the package, but it still sold amazingly well

persona sells well because of the dating sim elements too, dq is the best comparison because it's a clear cut turn based game with nothing fancy. but it sells less than final fantasy. even a well regarded game like dqxi got outsold by a universally panned game like ff15.

Unironically the best FF game released this decade. Shame it's destined to be lost to time.

I got my friends to buy and enjoy it. Maybe if enough people spread the word...

They can continue down the rabbithole of making Final Fantasy whatever they want, but the fanbase for Final Fantasy and those of us who have the biggest nostalgia and wore the cap of Final Fantasy fan for decades now see FF games are Turnbased style, not action style.
If SE want to continue going action based with FF then it'll simply become an irrelevance which FF16 is already. The replayability of that game is next to zero.

Its influence was gutted by being an EGS exclusive. Shame.

Seems like most people who actually gave it the time love it. TN very clearly made a game for their core audience, which probably doesn't have a ton of overlap with core FF audience which likely hurt it too.

The "inspired by Game of Thrones" killed it for me tho

I agree, it sold well, but not as well as FF16, and FF16 didn't even reach their sales goal if I recall correctly. A suit is going to look at that, see retards bitching about turnbased combat, see their own turn based games not sell as well, and then say no more turn based games they don't sell. Square has retarded sales goals, they don't care if a game is cheap to make and then makes a lot of money for it's budget, they care about sales goals. Again, you're not wrong, but that's not how Square sees game sales, they see higher number is better. At the end of the day, E33 could have made more money than FF16, but they don't care about that, they only care that one sold more copies than the other.

I've seen a lot of Final Fantasy fans that tried it actually enjoy it. Both the story by the end of the game and the combat itself. It's a cult classic game, expect to see people singing Jack's praises in 5 to 10 years and talking about how it's the hidden gem of the Final Fantasy series.

Same, as an Englishman it was a massive red flag to me because really what they should have been inspired by was War of the Roses.
Being inspired by Game of thrones is neglecting what that entire franchise was based on and misunderstanding the culture and events behind it.
If he had said inspired by War of the Roses and Game of Thrones that would be different, as it would show knowledge as to what led to the other in popular culture.

expect to see people singing Jack's praises in 5 to 10 years and talking about how it's the hidden gem of the Final Fantasy series.

I hope so. I personally love it as much as I enjoyed nioh 2. Just a phenomenal title regardless if you're into ff or not

You can (without mods mind you) nearly shave off cool downs in XVI.
youtu.be/DwoWbl8h0II?si=nLuzSWcsnUKw7aXa
This video being one example of someone doing so. The problem is not that there is cool downs (you don't see anyone saying GBF Relink is a horrible action game for having cool downs) the problem is that XVI is an action game that doesn't ask the player to engage with the deeper systems that do add loads of fun to the experience. The average player spams the basic combo with occasional abilities to decrease the stagger gauge and then they dump a bunch of high damage abilities into the stagger window. Rinse and repeat. This isn't helped by the game slowly introducing new ability sets so people get conditioned to play that way and all the cool tech the game has like limit break cancelling gets completely ignored aside from dedicated players.

if you only consider FF games since the PS1, it's only better than FXV which is nothing amazing.

BG3 definitely did sell better than it and it's turn based and also quite fucking SLOW while we're at it turn based wise, doesn't even have animation skipping of fast foward options etc.

NTA but as a game I like it better than XV, XIII, XII (I didn't really fuck with the Gambit system or the ADB combat in general which is weird because I enjoy Xenoblade and it's kinda similar). I think the TB games are more well rounded experiences though. My biggest issue with XVI is that it's way too hyper focused on specific aspects and easy slam dunks it could've had like making the Hideaway just one of many cities in the game instead of the only real equivalent were what frustrated me. I think XVI cops more shit than is reasonable but I think the game is more annoying at times because with a couple of tweaks it would've been an all timer for me. Oh well live and you learn so I hope they do learn is all

gameplay wise? XIII is probably the absolute nadir of the series

The kingdom hearts team helped on the bahamut boss fight and that fight was the coolest shit ever, so i am jumping back on the kh4 train

there was also the nonexistent optimization
I dreaded the throne room cutscenes because even my 3070ti would drop frames thanks to the chancellor's fur robe with every hair rendered

Then why making Temu GoT in it

I play Jack's game on steam deck mostly. Main campaign was crazy because you had levels that stuck at 60 happily and any foliage heavy levels like marshland and tutorial level barely scraped 30. Rifts are great though because levels are tiny so I get a reliable 60. Even better if you replace base fsr1 with fsr3
