For me it's because I had just finished botw and immediately went into this one. Bad Idea because I got tired pretty fast of it

What's there to like? It was a highly anticipated sequel that doubled down on everything people hated about botw and then some while recycling the same map so your sense if discovery is kneecapped from the start, which was the whole point of botw in the first place. Barely fuck all in the sky islands and the depths is a unfinished area but they still delayed the game to add a fucking building mechanic that is entirely useless as whatever you make will break in seconds and require a lot of zonai crap to create outside of the meme bike. Fuse took a terrible weapon degradation system and slapped monster parts on it that will also break within seconds, great!

You should only play one of either TotK or botw. TotK is just botw but with different mechanics and some map differences, I think it has a better final boss sequence and overall story presence + more stuff to do, while the runes that botw had were better (which counts for a lot).
If you play one of these, the other will have significantly reduced novelty since they're so similar.
the first game got a bonus of being new and different to other zelders, which masked peoples internal issues with the game they were ignoring
TotK not only doesnt have that, but also drives home old zelda is dead, creativity is gone, and hey lmao same fucking map guys!

Your first one will likely be good, the other will be significantly worse.
BotW has better moment to moment gameplay since the runes and their limitations were better than TotKs "do anything" design.
However, BotW has more coom mods and better implementation of feMC gear, but TotK has better coom mods, but less of them and less integrated.

idk how botw even had fans in the first place. i remember people saying it was so refreshing compared to ubislop. i played it like 2 years later when i got a switch but it's literally the same thing. its even more boring because the world is even more empty
