Why aren't graphics improving

Why aren't graphics improving

Good graphics is 90% art direction, yes even for realistic visuals

90% players use mid tier and below graphics cards or playing on consoles

By saying the plastic in Dark Ages doesnt look better than the plastic in Eternal you are just telling everyone you are poor
Get a job hobo

today i learn that fps players tend to play at the lowest settings just so they can have the lowest possible framerate

imagine caring this much about winning in a game, couldn't be me

the same reason it feels like your hair grows more slowly as it gets longer
when you had 1" of hair, 0.5" of growth was a 50% increase and felt like a lot
when you have 20", 0.5" doesn't seem like much and is hard to visually notice
ie, diminishing returns

neumann bottleneck

This is what I am wondering. Shittier looking games than stuff we had 7-10 years ago are requiring more and more and they look worse somehow.

DEI

looks good enough to me, id be happy if more games had gore and physics

Art direction is getting worse, entirety of visual fidelity is ultimately about how good of an artist you are and well you understand existing tools. If you can fully utilize the tools you have at the moment for your purpose you can get visuals that are ageless.

Every company goes for realism slop just so they can reuse the same assets for all their games

graphics literally don't matter if the game is good. people who are obsessed with graphics and want movie games should just go watch tv or a movie instead of gaming. the more the developers focus on graphics the worse the game will be.

if those visuals were real they would look like that. besides some minor improvements to lighting, there is just nowhere to go.

Lack of img clarity. Everyhting just blurs together. Running some 10 year old games on 4k is more impressive than current aaa just because you can actually see shit.

fpbp
After Mirror's Edge came out 90% of art directors should've been fired on the spot.
It's STILL one of the best looking games, despite the textures and animations being extremely outdated. All because it has excellent direction.
Meanwhile super realistic textures on mocapped actors does nothing if the look isn't coherent.
To quote an art director from a good game:

Doesn't have to make sense; just has to evoke

Somewhere along the way graphics just became another number to go up.

How do you even go from here?

Because engines are focusing on texture resolution and 4k instead of visuals

And these new ugly games don't even work on those cards LMAO

games are focusing on 4K

only the best GPUs can even run new games in 4K

That just means that for most players there's no difference between a new 80 dollar game and a decade old 5 dollars on sale game

Pic unrelated I take it?

I remember during early 2010s, I had to change cards like, every year or two to keep up
Now I can just go 4 or 5 years without getting a new one
Devs are just not focusing on improving polycount anymore, they are entirely focused on lightning and textures

cookie cutter programmers using cookie cutter solutions

graphics literally don't matter

Then what the fuck am I paying for? Why is your new game 10 times more expensive and 10 times more demanding than the old one if it's not more technologically advanced

Exactly what is happening

Realism can only go so far. That's why having a good art style is superior.

that's the problem
they shouldn't be
but they add more layers of shit to "improve" visuals and now we're walking backwards in both senses, performance and looks

The same people who complain about graphics not improving are the same people who bitch that their 15+ year old computer can't run new games.

BAD GOY, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO SPEND $2K EVERY FEW YEARS TO GET 0 TANGIBLE IMPROVEMENT

Because developers are getting less competent, so you have to use more powerful hardware to achieve the same results.

Doom 2016 is a great example. It looked good and it ran great on just about everything. Now here's Doom: Fart Ages, where you MUST use some kind of ray tracing because they couldn't be bothered to create any baked in lighting.

Because the focus in on cluttering the screen with needles bullshit instead of having proper art direction or actual graphics improvements.
Balme pajeets and commie devs.

mirrors edge looks bad

blind people are not allowed ITT

RDR 2 was the peak. 2018, with way older tech. We unironically don't need more.

The requirements go up, but all the games look the same...

NTA but the finals looks much better than ME and it's basically the same style

Bethesda is a company full of pajeets
Stop buying their slop

completely diluted and devoid of vision
The Finals Art Direction saw Mirror's Edge and didn't understand why minimalism is appealing, instead they thought "how can we make it like Overwatch".

How much more real do you want it? What detail is missing for you visually?

(((Nvidia))) monopoly. Not defending AMD or Intel btw.

why would you set the settings lower? wouldn't that make it harder?

You shouldn't need to change your card every two cards.

Imagine how different the world would be had this movie succeeded. Squaresoft would be dominating gaming still and we'd have had AI and vtubers a lot sooner.

Because the devs are black

Like when you order food, but a black person is working, so it’s bad food

Nope, they look worse in many aspects than they did ten years ago.

It's the complete opposite. Back then cards costed nothing and you could use the same one for half a decade before needing to upgrade. Nowadays you need to upgrade like every year if you play AAAslop but games don't look any better and run worse.

Do they really need to get better when it's all photorealistic stuff these days

2010

that's bullshit
unless you actually meant 2000s
