This is a game from 2004
This is a game from 2004
Yeah, looks like it.
I remember looking at Doom 3 screenshots and think it looked absolutely incredible lol
Maybe graphics haven't stagnated as hard as I thought they have
Sure looks like it.
Same. Also I remember the way you interacted with computers was mind blowing too
This game sucked back then and it still sucks today.
how did they turn a jar of peanut butter into grenades?
Your point, faglord?
it was definitely incredible at the time, doom 3 came out in 2004 in the middle of the ps2 gen, the stagnation argument comes as soon as crysis comes into play
ok
Carmack was so focused on the tech that he forgot to make a good game that was fun to play. Say what you want about Romero but he injected soul into doom 1 and 2 and his absence among other things is a big reason why 3 is so soulless and boring.
D3 needed less jumpscares, more mobs, and a bit more focus on the outside of the facility. The interior level design is not bad per se but it really doesn't feel all that like mars. More hell assimilating reality would have been nice too because I found that part the best in the entire game after the chatter and the following silence at the start.
Escape from Butcher Bay is a 2004 game.
weapon slot dedicated to grenade
Yes, it's unfortunate.
Rage was even worse, the biggest meme is that iD shilled the megatextures tech and the end results was super muddy textures up-close, still remember this 2011 disaster
QFT
Characters looked a bit off, but the lighting etc. was great. I still think it looks neat desu.
Looks like old shit. Not enough upscaling, smear and blurriness for my gaytraced lighting.
I've been replaying it.
6th gen graphics thread?
so which youtuber brought this back now as a better than you thought misunderstood gem?
A new doom game came out.
wide hud is wide
no
Yes, Doom3 is a good Doom spin off game, yes, those hands look real if you squint your eyes a little bit, and yes, I like its extra bouncy grenades
old games at 4k look better than new games do regardless of settings
playing an old game at 4k and 120fps feels so crisp and nice compared to vaseline smeared lens bullshit that we get today, even at high resolution and framerate.
This game holds up while FEAR looks like dogshit now a days.
Rage is a 60 fps 360 game. It's technically incredible.
Yeah but thats because of the low detail. Quake 2 looks sharp as fuck at 1080p for example, where with far cry 5 you could count the pixels.
Hard angles my dude.
But yeah, classic games at 4k are great
You know shit is grim when people act like doom 3 was recieved good at the time. It was a graphical show case but people really disliked it.
Also fun is that BFG gave you a flash light and people shat on it because "it ruined the vibe and ART" even though the most populair mod at the time was something like the "tape mod" that taped a flashlight to your armor.
Nobody liked it, but we have to act like everything is shit now and everything was great then.
The only thing that was better in the past was you, anon, you.
You didnt fuck up yet,
I remember playing this. I liked finding all the hidden collectibles that were basically "yeah so every major conspiracy theory? We were totally doing that, even did some you didn't know about either". The Marilyn Manson as an alien thing didn't work as well as the devs probably thought. Dude just appears way too late in the game to be relevant but at least Mulder is entertaining.
The megatexture tech was so dumb, basically every tiling/repeating texture would be stored multiple times (allegedly to speed up loading on slower HDD's like on the Xbox 360) which bloated the game's size by a fuckton, and they still looked blurry and shitty. The Evil Within 1 was the most notable victim of this meme engine.
It's very jarring to enjoy a bunch of games the past several decades and to go online and see people supposedly didn't like those same games. ngl, It just fuels my dislike for all you people, I see you as beneath me, unable to just have fun and like stuff.
NTA, but Doom 3 came out only a couple months before Half-Life 2, you can imagine how well that went.
What many anons forget is id software ALWAYS ships 60fps games since doom 3 (the earlier titles....eh not so much). Rage is a meh game for a variety of reasons but performance sure isn't one of them.
It looks fine. The best part of graphics from this era is how much visual clarity there is. No audiovisual bloat.
Why does it look much better than Doodoo 3?
Pretty well? I enjoyed both games, they weren't really competing if you tried them both out. My brother didn't tell me to hook up surround sound speakers and play in the dark for Half Life 2, he said it for Doom 3.
It's easy for a game to hold up visually when 90% of it is darkness.
The difference in fidelity with just a few months was downright jaw dropping. We don't get anything even remotely like that now.
Yeah and here's the fun part, HL2 also ran a lot better, so absolutely everyone, even the people with older machines, was playing it.
untrue
I played both on the Xbox and both ran incredibly well for being console ports. Now we get shitty PC ports and okay console versions. What the fuck happened?
it's after 2010 it has started to stagnate
might as well turn off the flashlight if he isn't going to use it
Not on IPS displays lol
Half Life 2 ran like shit on consoles, it wasn't until it came to 360 with Orange Box that it was good.
This is a Playstation 2 game
Doom 3 was build for pc first and later optimized for xbox. I suggest looking up picrels video on youtube if you're curious about the process.
Whereas nowadays devs favors console builds.
The fuck are you smoking? FEARs lighting is on par with Doom 3 and the environmental effects alone trump it. And the both have mundane maps so FEAR edges it out.
Graphics never moved past Batman Archam City. Graphics stagnate since 2011.
This is a game from 2002
Okay, zoomer.
PC keks
Armham city is also held up by the lighting of a night city and zoomed out camera. It doesn't look bad by any means but it's not fantastic.
They look equal to me but guess which platform could run Half Life 2 on high.
Guess which platform ran half-life 2 without stuttering.
I've been saying this for years, but the sentiment has not reached normalfag media yet. Visual clarity should be the highest priority in graphics. Shit like Avowed literally hurts my eyes. Every modern AAA cinematic game is godawful, in this regard, it's all just visual vomit that blends together. Oblivion remaster is the perfect example.
PC?
At least it wasn't a slideshow. You'd have to hack your Xbox with a better CPU to get it to look decent.
youtube.com
Jack is hogging all the texture budget in this frame.
this is a game from 1996 lol
and now here's doom 12 years later
PC?
You're too young to be having this conversation.
I've never managed to finish Doom 3. I've started it multiple times and always get bored as fuck and drop it.
Graphics stopped at AC Unity, that game still looks good.
It's a terribly boring game, Crysis of its day it was only interesting because of its graphics. These games get outdated the second a better looking game comes out.
Damn, 2007 looks like THAT!?
Damn, what a game.
I like Doom 3, but it should've opened up more by the mid game.
Megatextures were ahead of their time. They're still used today, just put to better purpose.
The idtech5 editor was cool too. Multiplayer editing, real time 3d texture painting directly on whatever maps you wanted. I wish it had gotten released like idtech 4 and all.
Rage itself isn't a bad game, but it was stretched thin. The vehicle combat could've been cut and the open world texture space used for smaller environments. More focus. The vehicles aren't that fun outside of races imo.
and it shows!
fag. crysis was good
Not even close. The environments might look dated, but the visual effects that happen when shooting the environment and enemies alone still look amazing, and make the gunplay feel more satisfying than most modern titles. Not even counting the dynamic lighting that still holds up.
Crysis was actually fun, you should actually play it
crysis was good
lol
The balanced way to do the flashlight is to put it on the pistol and shotgun only.
I knew a lot of people that liked Doom 3 on release btw. Me included.
Bullshit, anon.
It's jarring enjoying something 2 decades ago and then finding out that not everyone enjoyed what I liked
Are you for real?
looks like a bullshot
it's not funny
This is a game from 2004
You'd be wrong on that front chief.
Doom 3 vs HL2 might be the most brutal mogging in video game history
id ran away to make phone games for a decade after this humiliation
This is a game from 2001
What humiliation? Both good.
That is clear.
It looks excellent to this day and ran at 60fps
fear looks like garbage
both have mundane maps
There's more detail and atmosphere in a single Doom 3 room than all of FEAR's sterile sewers and boxey office spaces combined.
sub 20 fps
Emotional hallway
BLACK??
Hl2 looks way better. Doom 3 started the trend of everything being smeared with vaseline that modern games still do.
the only thing here that doesnt look like 2004 is the soulless ui straight from the 2020's
The weird era of everything looking shiny and plastic
FEAR looks better. I don't know how you can look at that mess in the op and say its superior.
The balanced way to do the flashlight is to put it on the pistol and shotgun only.
Is there a mod that does this? The ones I saw always did the shotgun and machine gun.
aint no hud and a ps2 logo but who knows, maybe it looks the same in the game
I dropped it after shooting NPCs and seeing it do nothing to them. You can kill everyone freely on freaking Doom 3.
Was there a bigger casual filter than the Doom 3 shotgun?
No. The D3 shotgun is OP as fuck but turns out having to aim is a serious issue for doom players.
Metal Gear Solid 2 came out in 2001.
People were seething about how close you had to get to use it even though it was instarape at point blank.
For some reason they wanted a sniper rifle in a game that was 99% cramped rooms where enemies spawned right next to you.
Here's footage of HL2 running on an old Nvidia card youtube.com
Here's Doom 3 running on a similar Nvidia card youtube.com
You'll notice that HL2 is running on medium-high settings while Doom 3 needed the config edited so that it only used LOD textures and the lighting was disabled. And even then HL2 still got better framerates.
What's wrong with the font?
Doom 3 shotgun is meant to be a melee weapon, once you understand this it becomes the most fun weapon in the game
The problem with these hilarious attempts at revisionist history is that people can just play Doom 3 themselves and see that it is, indeed, terrible.
Aim? What aiming is there in shoving the gun down enemies throats and pulling the trigger?
It doesn't have to be a sniper rifle, it just needs to be more than a glorified melee weapon.
Though, most of the gamers who played HL2 and Doom 3 had modern hardware with 128mb GPU minimum by the end of 2004
A melee weapon that needs to reload, needs ammo, and makes me expect it to be a gun is not fun, its frustrating and stupid.
People wanted the same mid-close workhorse, but they added the MG so the shotgun wasn't allowed to outshine it in that role. As a result it becomes a powerful melee weapon. Honestly, the best weapon in 3 is the grenade, probably my favorite grenade in any game.
IDK anon, there were a lot of poorfags and kids who didn't know how to upgrade PCs back then. Even so, HL2 still runs better on high end hardware from the time.
Just use the chainsaw then.
Beautiful screenshot. I was impressed with Doom 3. And Rage. But Rage was downgraded, could have been much better, shooting wasn't as good as other games like Call of Duty or Killzone. I'd rather it have been 30fps on consoles with motion blur, focusing on it's graphics. Too I wish it was a lightgun game or something like Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii, with cursor updating at 60fps on screen. A higher framerate later than the rest.
Deserves more immersion and artistry, story, characters, they did the work with engine, just needed application of people's insides.
Could have been some of the best games of all time if taken further than times can contain or summarise. Life then. Something to come back to.
God, I wish Doom 3 had good gameplay cause I love the aesthetic, audio design and just overall atmosphere of that game. The modern ones all seem too cartoony to me and even the music sounds generic compared to the classic tracks, but at least they are actually fun to play and have guns I wanna use other than the machine gun
Counterpoint, I played it and liked it.
Doom 3 does have good gameplay

And here's how you do a Doom 3 sequel:

Rage looked pretty fucking good if you didn't get too close to the textures though
n-n-n-no
his maps in 2 aren’t even that good.
2 isn't that good anyway.
Yes, few people made it past the original game to play the expansion packs gloriously perfect double barrel shotgun.
IDtech4 game:
2 states, mid-day and midnight. All exterior locations changed from one or the other so the 2 end states are different feelings and good in their own way.
Clear for all distance. Still.
Very fast vehicles, screen res lowered with speed so assets don't need to be reduced for it. Motion blur added.
You're a match maker. People generally stay indoors, daytime vehicles speed along fast. At night time people prey on eachother.
You need to make it to each area during the day, else fight during the night or risk hitting things.
You talk to people, take note of their tastes. Offer someone that appreciates the same stuff once they're known.
Hunting down people. Anyone out you can talk to, and if they're not matched already they'll give you some time and resupply.
Vehicles run on water, everyone carries on them a few days worth, never knowing when they'll need to travel or pay for something. Water is abundant, but it's regulated at settlements, cities, it's currency. Found scattered in between areas, but far enough out without transport to discourage travel. You can pilot different vehicles. A hoverbike that skims over the surface, a VTOL jet, a submarine etc.
Underground is a vast underwater sea, with caverns and secret hideaways.
You receive an allowance for water every day, it's enough for food, fun, but not enough for advancement. For that you owe places. Excess goes to credit, which is charged interest. Endeavours usually end in slavery, which people seek to escape. Some people will lie about taste if you give away hints on what the others want. Thinking a fresh start somewhere else will end their servitude. Entrapment is only enforced to whatever fountain or source was taken from. Take as much as you want but it will be owed. And that area hostile if not appeased, repaid. Bounties placed on you in excess of what is to be repaid. Tricking people into owing more than they can repay is standard.
Stealing a way of survival, trading cheap to lose heat
Very competent game, more fun to play than Doom 3, but the lighting wasn't AS good as Doom 3.
Still looks pretty damn good. It's one of those rare old games where everything is so intricately detailed that nothing is left to the imagination. I'm a huge HL2 fanboy, but due to the scale and real-life mimicking style of that game, there are many areas where things are kind of blocky and you have to suspend your disbelief. In Doom 3, that's almost never the case. Everything is full of detail and there's none of the "sharp-edged box with tiling textures look" going on anywhere. The downside is that the game's environments are quite cramped for optimization reasons.
Cool lighting demo, shit game
The actual stagnation has been since the mid-2010s
Destiny 1 literally looks better than Destiny 2 does now for example. There's 100 gigabyte games with lazy facial mocap and shittily wrapped 4k textures that get fucking mogged by shit from 2014 that ran on the o.g xbone.
I would gladly take graphics not advancing much past like 2014 but instead games ran at 200FPS than now where somehow memeing about bloodborne being silky smooth """"cinematic""""" 30 FPS is now literally the industry standard because they would rather make bloated 150 GB games with 8k ray tracing bullshots that stutter and bottleneck CPU even on the new generation consoles they're platform exclusives for. What the fuck.
There's literally 300GB games these days and I'm sorry but they're not 10x better looking than 30gb shit was despite running 10x worse
EAX died for your sins.
There's a source port for Doom 3 called dhewm 3 that emulates EAX with OpenAL EFX.
