I was around diuring that age, and it was definitely better, and while those games didn't age well, they play as wonderfully today as then, as long as you aren't broken by streamlining and modernized nonsense.

I usually fuck myself over though because I forget autosaves weren't a thing and some games are genuinely meant to be savescummed or I'll just straight up forget to save after an hour or so and die, restart at like a level or two ago.

Newer JRPGs with action elements are incredibly non-comparable to JRPGs which are almost universally turn-based. Games like Chrono Trigger are a minority compared to the vast sea of turn-based JRPGs.
It's why the distinction of ARPG is made because saying something is a "JRPG" doesn't entail what gameplay that covers. It covers a theme/culture of where the game was made. Turn-based JRPGs are the expectation of the retro-era JRPG. Nowadays it is a toss-up and the distinction has to be made. So I would compare turn-based JRPGs of today with retro JRPGs (which are unanimously turn-based with extremely few exceptions).
So I don't consider those JRPGs are relevant to the discussion of old JRPGs. I also grew up with turn-based JRPGs so it's like calling brazil nuts nigger toes for me. It's a habit.

JRPG's sucked then, suck now, and will always suck, and were only ever popular because they functioned as glorified tech demo's back when graphics, sound, and storage limitations actually advanced in large amounts fairly regularly, even within a single console generation.
