Then to top it off, they (like square enix) decided to use gdeflate, which is gimped on nvidia/windows to the point you can take a performance hit on linux and gain more stability or have to mod it out of your game.

They banked on technology progressing, designed around consoles and got double burned by Jensen and Su, the cousins in crime.

MT Framework was just as bad as RE Engine. It was also just as good in the cases where it was utilized well. Dragon's Dogma and Monster Hunter World were both on MT Framework and both of those games ran like absolute dogshit. Dragon's Dogma was eventually brute forced with hardware, and MHW was eventually optimized well enough due to it being their most profitable game of all time.

Games like Resident Evil 7/8, 4 remake, Exoprimal, and DMC5 run like an absolute dream on basically anything. Absolute optimization magic like DMC4 or RE5 on MT Framework. The problem is games like Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon's Dogma 2.

It doesn't matter the engine. If they make a smaller scale corridor game, it will be an optimization masterpiece. If it's open world in any capacity, it will run like absolute dogshit. The engine swap didn't kill Capcom, their push into making everything more open world did.

TLDR; it was worse than vanilla launch World and Rise for different reasons.

It didn't have the same breakthrough "Next-Gen" feel of World. Players forgave alot of crap about World for the sole fact that it finally brought MH into a new generation off of portable consoles. Despite most of those flaws also being in Wilds, Wilds doesn't have the luxury World had since it's basically the same shit.

Rise on the other hand mostly got off for two reasons.

1. it was on the switch so most of the new audience for World didn't even play it and wrote it off as a spin off. It had much lower expectations as a "Portable" game

2. it had back to back TU drops. Multiple monsters every TU every month. So it kept players attention.

Really, where Wilds dropped the ball is the post release content. I, and probably many others thought that the TU release schedule of Rise was going to be the norm going forward with nu-MH. But they went back to the terrible drip-feed from World.

Worlds Drip-feed was actually dog shit. Monster Hunter games get the feeling of being "done with" once you finish it and you finish grinding the monsters and sets you want. And that's fine assuming the games have alot of content like pre-World Monster Hunter HR games. Adding literally one new monster every 2-3 months is not enough for someone to get reinvested in a grindathon game like this. It just makes people drop it once they're "done" and come back for the G-rank expansion and repeat the process.

It's true. Good examples are both the Iceshard Cliffs and Ruins of Wyveria. Incredibly linear maps where you have entire sections you can't simply drop to because of invisible walls. If it were Rise, you'd be able to climb up any of the mountains, rock structures, drop to anywhere, etc. The only thing seemingly "open world" about Wilds is how the regions are interconnected via hidden loading screens. That's it, the maps themselves are flat downgrades.

DMC5 hate seems contrarian in nature, it's not very colorful and I don't like where they took Vergil's gameplay model after DMC3 (now he plays like Dante with a katana more than anything) but everything else was killer.

By the same token, DMC5 love is mostly the result of whiplash from the disasters that were DMC4 and DmC + the 11 year wait. It has other assorted problems like V and the stupid Kingdom Hearts plot. Other less obvious but arguably more important problems are the poor level design, DMD balance, and mobs that are either just annoying or run contrary to the system mechanics such as judeccas and behemoths. It was fallen angels all over again except 1/4 of the roster. It's only natural people would sour a bit once the honeymoon phase ended.

Number of things or entities don't seem to be a problem for the engine, it can handle it. Exoprimal and DMC5 showed how many enemies you can have on screen at once and no platform had a problem. It has to do with something with the open world, either the environments or the stacking too many behaviors on each NPC or doing the environment or etc. But I believe the issue is deeper than that.

If you have enough of a modicum of tech understanding, this somewhat explains a lot. To explain to the tech illiterate, this basically means they have to keep backwards compatibility of the engine because the policy is to maintain it so all prior RE Engine games can run on the latest engine. That means they can't really rewrite something that is inefficient or anything, they have to build guardrails around it before they can attempt doing that so older games can run. I believe whatever they did for AI or environments or etc. is in dire need of rewriting being 10+ years old and RE Engine is not flexible enough to allow it so the devs are stuck in a conundrum of trying the best to make sure their specific title works but they are basically praying to the engine devs who are failing at their job to update RE Engine to not be dogshit.

I have no idea how they made the NPCs "think so hard they crash your FPS" in DD2 but monster AI in MH is pretty basic all things considered.

World managed to fix up a lot of it over time. There were performance problems that were fixed with driver updates (GeForce driver team clearly didn't play to Rotten Vale as fixed drivers came out after people reported them), the stupid anti-tamper Capom made and used when they also used Denuvo (I think this was what tanked performance a lot for Iceborne's launch until a few updates later), and of course Denuvo was removed eventually.

I wish I could have the same confidence for improvement in Wilds.

Resident Evil doesn't really mean anything to me as an example because i qualify all RE Engine criticism by saying Resident Evil is the one and only place it works/belongs.

It does explain a lot because if you look at the rest of the talk, they take it to an extreme and they use a different customization per title based on "modules" and customize for each title because of this feature development mindset to box each title into their own special mix of modules. Which means whatever DD2 is using for AI is not what MH used and vice versa with asset streaming. The thing that confuses me is why they didn't build on each other's code or why wasn't it standardized in the engine?

it was pretty good, but i think it could've been a lot better if they hadn't bothered making V a playable character. i still prefer DMC 4 SE because i can tag between Dante, Vergil, and Trish for combos. unfortunately DMC 5 did very little to get away from the series' bad habit of every level starting to melt together cause they all look the same.

Let me show you the reason 5 is a pile of garbage. Outside the lack of reversals, inertia, guard flying, and additional advanced tech, and the shit graphics and the awful plot and devil breakers. V singlehandedly makes 5 one of the worst games ever made. It is no surprise to any real DMC fan why Itsuno was fired.

Rise mons take a fraction of the amount of time to implement as World or Wilds mons. Rise uses slightly modified GU models with updated textures, pretty simple AI, and minimal ecology details. They could probably churn out a dozen Rise monsters in the time it'd take to make 1 Wilds monster. Not saying that's a good use of time or resources, but it's how it is.

I was really looking forward to it when it was finally announced, but it looked so iterative that I lost a bit of interest back then. It was praised everywhere though, including this place with constant pseudo-generals reaching bump limit. Last year I craved some DMC again so I decided to finally play it and it felt great, refreshing even; much better than I thought it was going to be, even if it has its flaws. Then I start looking up threads here and suddenly the game was always bad.

Seems like I can't keep up with Anon Babble's ever charging narrative.

I missed this game when it came out so lately I've been checking out some gameplay because I really dig the aesthetic and it looks really good. I really wish Capcom made it a singleplayer game with a multiplayer/online component like EDF instead of trying to get a piece of the saturated "hero shooter" genre.

It was a fun game with a very nonsensical structure and a plot nobody cared about. The bits where it would throw hundreds/thousands of raptors at you were so great but repeated objectives and the middling PvP hurt it. Should've just been 5-man linear levels where you race the enemy team to complete them and 10-man raid bosses with none of the other fluff.

I genuinely thought it would be an EDF-like but the PvP stuff completely killed my interest.
There's space for "EDF with an actual budget" and the mechas vs Dinos aesthetic is kickass

Best games on RE Engine are Kunitsu-Gami, DMC5 & GnG Resurrection. Kunitsu-Gami in particular is the best Capcom game in a decade or more and the best example of showing off the visual capabilities of the engine (since the best-looking games outside of it are very dark or run like shit, barring SF6 which is in some ways impressive but has very clashing art design choices). Everything else is at least decent; RE3make, Exoprimal, and DD2 are the weakest games running on it but I wouldn't call any of them worse than a 6/10.

It's not an engine issue because modders have been making pro-level costumes since day1 and the community tools (REtool, REmesh/chain editor, etc.) are insanely good for REngine

That's probably because the Avatar stuff is making them even more money than costumes were, at least they must be at the rate they're making them.

it's a combination of two factors. one, yes, according to dev interviews it takes them approximately 2 months to make one roster-tier costume. the second contributing factor is that Capcom funnel 75% of their funding into Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, and the rest of their IP have to lobby for the remaining 25% of the yearly budget. Street Fighter just isn't a high priority for them.

Kunitsu-Gami is gorgeous and well-stylized without having any kinds of shaders or other effects Okami would have. I wish the game didn't flop so this would be more evident to people. Also, it should be taken into account that Okami 2 is being made at CLOVERS with Capcom's assistance rather than fully internally like basically every RE Engine game before it; Kamiya likely has a lot of say in how the game will look.

Putting out a few games that are too dark/realism-pilled doesn't mean they don't have artists. GnG Resurrection, MH Stories 2, Kunitsu-Gami, etc. all have great art direction and their in-house artists are still great when they can actually show off (Tamio, Shinkiro, Ikeno, the Ace Attorney artist whose name escapes me). Bengus is well past his prime but his recent stuff is at least better than the shit he was putting out for SFV.

I've been playing that game recently and is great; I'm disappointed it didn't generate more buzz when it came out. It can get ballbustingly frustrating (more so than hard) but they added some options like the spell tree and checkpoints so everyone has more or less an equal shot at finishing the game, at least once. I do admit I think they went a bit overboard with the placement of the Umbral Bees and Shadow Orbs so I haven't gotten the true ending yet.
