The "Life" level tiers are pretty heavily gated by the story quests in the early game, and the early game is very long. Compared to AC the content unlocks are less restricted by time passing and more by the amount of time you put into the game itself.
Grinding is only necessary if you want to complete side content but the side content is the fun of a game like this.
You can certainly play for a couple of hours, stop, and feel like you've made progress.

90% of the combat challenges overlap with each other, if you focus on only one and decide to level the others later you're going to need to backtrack low level zones. It saves a lot of time if you enter a room of spiders and see that Merc and Paladin need 9 each for example, respawning the room takes a second and you can just kill 18 of them on both classes instead of having to revisit that room 10 hours later.

I love this game but I probably enjoyed Sandrock a little bit more because of the interactions with the townsfolk and the story.
I can say that this, Sandrock, and RF 3/4 Special are all neck and neck in my mind, though. They're all excellent.

it does not reset the timer but you can fuck around doing area challenges for 5 mins or so then gate back

it doesn't reset bosses, but it does reset minibosses and regular nodes and mobs. makes doing fishing a lot easier
