Plenty of things it was praised for was warranted. Like the artstyle. But even back then I thought the people claiming it wasn't a rage inducing game couldn't have been more wrong.

It wasn't a good competitive shooter, but it was a great casual character fantasy with great writing. There are people who will tell you that this unsupported spammy jankfest was a better multiplayer shooter than Halo 3, MW2, or CS:GO, and that is almost entirely because of the social elements and the old YouTube community. Its primary appeal has more in common with MMORPGs and Minecraft than with serious shooters.
The games it inspired are largely responsible for the decline of the FPS genre. Any shooter that de-prioritizes shooting in favor of RPG class cancer is going to be less fun for people who like to shoot guns.

TF2 in it's heyday was and remains the undisputed goat of casual fps games. Nowadays it's a hollowed out shell of it's former self even if that still winds up mogging the rest of it's competition anyway..
