this is because of how LLMs are trained in general. training scrapes a lot of data off of the internet, so he has a general idea of what to do since this includes guides. but actually doing those things is the tough part.

Outside of battle Dig can be used to flee a dungeon and return to the last Pokemon Center visited. In the previous run Claude caught a Diglett and once it learned Dig he kept using it to flee Mt. Moon instead of tough it out and find the exit.

He taught it to Wartortle because he wanted a coverage move for Lt. Surge, but people are worried he'll get stuck in the same loop the previous Claude was stuck in for two months.

Sand's sandbags

Claude has a short-term memory that at best lasts a hundred steps or so. Most dungeons need more than that to reach the other side. He also has a long term memory he can write notes into if he thinks something is important. Unfortunately he can't exactly write out a map of which areas he's explored using just text, so clearing a dungeon requires a lot of trial and error.

The problem with Dig is it functions as an infinite use Escape Rope to retreat to the start of a dungeon. As soon as Claude decides he's "lost" or needs to "heal" he can open the pokemon menu and Dig. He loses any progress but gets fully healed by the Pokemon center he's now standing nearby, which fixes all his short term problems and reinforces this behavior is a great idea in his permanent long-term memory.

Mt Moon is particularly bad for Dig because Route 4 is technically on both sides of Mt Moon but every guide on the internet says "travel through Mt Moon to reach route 4", so Claude escapes Mt Moon, sees he's in Route 4 and thinks he's making Great Progress. Even if he clears Mt Moon, it's possible to backtrack all the way around the world and return to the starting side and set up an infinite loop.

Rock Tunnel has the same route problem btw. He can stall there with Dig too.
