i mean, there's no strict definition of "console generation", it's based on the context of the discussion. in terms of sales numbers, especially when making predictions about the sales of future consoles, it's far more useful to discuss them in terms of how they were perceived in the zeitgeist, because that's what influences sales numbers, not the technological jumps

I was a GBC kid growing up and used to consider it a successor, but now in retrospect it was mostly just a GameBoy with a color effect and didn't have enough exclusives for it to be considered a real successor. If we can't consider the N3DS as the successor to the 3DS despite having its own pool of games, then GBC shouldn't count either.

Switch didn't let me play anywhere I liked to in my house with ease, but it definitely was better in every other regard. Almost every Switch must have is a Wii U port, and it's just not comfy to hold for long periods. The Wii U gamepad had grips, and was very comfy to hold despite its appearance. I slightly remember the hand cramps I'd get when I bought the switch and had to transition to a very flat surface. I still get those hand cramps, but it's after an hour of playing.

N64? Flopped in EU and Japan - only the US market had a decent playerbase but even there it lost againts the PS1.
Gamecube? Lost against the PS2 and depending on the region even XBOX - 3rd place only beating the Dreamcast.

They only had the resources to really focus on one system, and Wii U was neglected as a result. The only Mario title we got was another NSMB and people were tired of it by then, and sandbox games like Mario Maker seem fun in concept, but the lack of professionally made levels becomes apparent. There was no FE, no Animal Crossing, Zelda didn't come out until the Switch released, no Metroid. The good games like Mario Kart 8, Sm4sh, and the like were very excellent games, but they were between very large droughts. The Wii U is why I went from only owning Nintendo consoles to owning both a PlayStation and a Switch. I don't feel the sting of droughts any longer.

It wasn't the best system for multiplats. The only thing it had was raw power. The weird half-measure of those mini-discs meant it was more expensive to manufacture games, which had to be more compressed than PS2 games, and likely split into two discs. None of which was a deal breaker, but all just a headache for a system that was a year behind in install base and not likely to catch up considering its lack of a DVD player which made it a significantly more appealing console for families, meaning it was beating out Nintendo in family appeal as well as the mature audience, having already established mature games like MGS.
Also, the controller having less buttons probably disincentivized ports even more, but that's just speculation on my part.

OLEDs can't into VRR because of bad flicker issues. I think Asus has a solution in a gaming laptop, but it's very expensive iirc. Something like a Steam Deck circumvents this by not having VRR but instead multiple static refresh rates. On the other hand, the VRR on the Switch will smooth out frametime variations between 30-60 FPS, but I'd imagine most games would try and go for a locked 40 FPS (which is more than acceptable handheld)
No offense but this is just one of the most uninformed retarded posts I've read today. Monster Hunter World came out in 2018 and had a major expansion a year later. MH Wild came out THIS year, and already has half the amount of sales. It got 10 million units in a month. To act like it's sold less, because it's only achieved 10 million sales in a month, is obviously dishonest.
Furthermore, BOTW which came out in 2017 and sold 32m, was followed up by TOTK at $70 and released only two years ago to 20m sales, which is likely to expand with the Switch 2 performance updates.
Lastly, sports games like 2K show us that you're just wrong. NBA 2K24 sold, as far as I'm seeing, about 9m. 2K25 at $70 has sold over 7m sales as of February meaning it's likely increased to around the same amount since.
