Should I play this for the first time or is it too aged?

Should I play this for the first time or is it too aged?

Games don't age.

only if you want to find out why everyone hates half-life 2

games don't age, get that crap out of your brain

it's aged like a fine wine
play the original instead of the remake slop

Should I play this for the first time or is it too aged?

Soyjak.jpg - 250x311, 14.55K

Zoomers think Half-Life is too hard

343.png - 1044x322, 47.61K

imagine falling for shitty bait like this

nice selfie lil bro

i finished half life when i was 10

It shits on most modern games still. Go fucking play it.

out of 10

The controls are so clunky it's insane and the game expects you to use them to go over ordinary stuff like crates. Just watch a playthrough.

Games definitely age.
Nobody is clamoring for pong anymore.
Doesn't mean it is a bad game, but past a certain point, only enthusiasts interested in old games will try it.
This is the case for the majority of pre-windows PC games, and will be true for all games eventually.

Remember that fucking retard youtuber who spent two hours jumping on barrels to make a jump because he somehow didn't know about the crouch-jump?

The only way for this game to become hard is if you try to not savescum at all

Hey I played a shit ton of pong during the high of flash games

Granted everything since gen 7 has been prompt based 'press x to do thing' so someone younger can easily miss it.

The real IQ filter is on a rail and getting stuck there.

I'm playing it for the first time right now and it's pretty good. The movement is silky smooth and the levels are interesting to navigate. I have a more positive impression of it than HL2 which I played first.

Bashes you are brain into brainpaste

guys should I consume this piece of media or is it too old?

nigga, think for thyself
I played it in 2017 and enjoyed it, like it actually fucking matters to you

IMG_0884.jpg - 1125x958, 619.41K

hold shift lil bro

basic maze with 1 looping path

waow...
the real shithead part is the end of We've Got Hostiles where you have to slowly crawl through a bunch of vents and most of them are just dead ends

Just play Black Mesa instead.

idk why but its the little shit like this that makes my dick hard

I played it for the first time just recently. The only annoying thing is that the platforming absolutely sucks. The last two hours also kinda suck

soulless, buggy remake slop

The old Black Mesa looks fucking awful though

Games do age and it has aged quite a bit, but it's still solid. 2 and the episodes are much better.

Play the remake is better in every way

its shit

How can one game have so many satisfying weapons?

for me, it's the *PHHHHFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTSIUUUUU*

Literally the entire black mesa section of the game is carbon copied from the original albeit a few minor differences. Just replacing it with Half Life 2 graphics really. The only MAJOR difference is the Xen part of the game. I'll admit I didn't like Xen in both the original and Black Mesa versions.

half life 2 graphics suck nigger dick

You're a retarded faggot. Source still looks amazing to this day.

minor differences

cuts on a rail

makes surface tension into a total slog

good games are good forever
graphical fidelity aside, Half-Life 1 still holds up as one of the engaging first person shooters

It's a good game, but the ladders are kinda frustrating to use. That's pretty much my only complaint about it.

going to level with you, it is aged somewhat but not to the point where its unique quality is diminished. it is absolutely still worth playing if what you're seeking is a cool adventure with reasonably functional gameplay. i've played games where the constant chore of their interface grinds them down but hl1 isn't that, play it.

I really must not! What did I miss?

Save in-between every encounter. Problem solved.

hold shift when going down ladders

that was dsp. hes made a career as the internets village idiot.

Nope, not getting out of this chair.

It's fun but you cant beat the tau cannon

Freedom of movement.

whats-HAAEHHH/spoiler]

I must have been letting my finger off it right before I tried to descend a lot of them the last time I played. ty anon.

for the purposes of a grounded movie like the godfather motion picture productions had reached technical maturity at least in terms of the end product.

No, it's boring and basically a marvel movie for italians.

Video games had also done this by 1998.

It's literally the zenith of video games. Nothing has surpassed the atmosphere and setting of this. A 24 hour situation that is more important than anything else going on in the world at that moment, and it's totally unknown to anybody outside, and you get to experience it from beginnning to end in one crazy night? That's the epitome of cool.

the same is true for half life.

games released now don't do anything particularly better technically or design wise.

the only thing where we have "progressed" in is graphical fidelity

even if that were true, it's an entirely different point and not what we're talking about, you 22 year old retard

As someone that was actually alive when the game came out, I think its still playable as few games truly "age". I do think it was always overrated by normalfags who only played FPS slop and were surprised to encounter one with a functional plot for once. Its wasn't even one of the top 2 pc games released there year it came out, and arguably not top 5 overall, anyone who said it was GOTY was a massive normalfag retard

My gripes are that the shotgun sucks ass in this game and that Xen looks like absolute shit. Otherwise it was extremely fun.

games released now don't do anything particularly better technically or design wise.

HL2's physics blow HL1 out of the water.

anon HL2 was released 21 years ago...

I genuinely and unironically would prefer if games stayed at Goldsrc graphics and improved gameplay for the last ~25 years

Don't care.
Throw away a couple hours to figure out if you like this thing or not? No, thank you.
Just because it's free and easy doesn't make it worth doing.

It's honestly crazy how absurdly bad HL2 is compared to HL1.

HL2, not HL1.

Pong actually holds up reasonably well, largely thanks to it being 2 player game. It's some other early arcade hits that have aged more poorly, such as Asteroids and Space Invaders. I could see myself spending a whole afternoon with Pong and some mates, less so with Asteroid.

this game hasn't aged a day, much like most quake engine games

shit gunplay. It's barely a shooter.

The funniest thing to me is how clear it is that nobody making HL2 has ever touched a real gun, let alone fired one

It's crazy how much better HL2 feels to play than HL1. It's nice to have weapons that actually work.

XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS XEN SUCKS

it just makes the HL3 hype that much more retarded. HL2 wasn't even a good game. HL:A was basically a disney movie with its goofy cartoon graphics and reddit humor/political correctness & total disregard of smart HL game mechanics(the protagonist doesn't talk in order to immerse you better, et cetera). what makes anybody think HL3 is going to magically be good? none of the original HL team is even still at Valve lol.

it is a modern shooter (by virtue of being the first modern shooter). if you have player an FPS that came out in the 20 years, you will understand half-life and be able to enjoy it unimpeded

HL2 wasn't even a good game

When will this current wave of Anon Babble contrarian-conformity end? I'm betting on 2-3 years from now

relative to HL1, it wasn't. for all games, it was good. but we're talking about HL1

anon, did you know that marines cannot attack while moving? they can only shoot you while they are standing still.
keep them moving, with grenades and aggressive forward movement.

This wasn't part of my phd

oh you weren't born knowing how to crouch jump in this videogame? what a retard lolololol

why is it so fucking baaaad

it's crazy how HL1 went from the coolest location and setting to HL2 having the most boring and soulless location and setting imagineable

The only part I had to use a guide on was the stupid fucking wire puzzle in coolant tank level of blue shift

Oh my gawd fuck hl1. You know the whole internet considers HL2 a goddamn masterpiece and is revered as one of the most legendary greatest games of all time and none of that means anything to you, because Why? Because muh hl1? That's it?

Facts

pretty much

how else should you find out, zoomer retard? experience has to be lived, other people can't do it for you.
go skip through a let's play by one of your e-idols then, fucking hell

yes, and HL2 came out 21 years ago

the physics are a cool gimmick, but that's about it. it doesn't impact gameplay on a fundamental level, even if the posterchild weapon is designed around it

Saving every 5 minutes? WTF? A real 90s gamer here, savescumming works best if you save every 20-30 seconds.

It actually is quite hard. I played it recently for the first time since 2001 when I got it for the PS2. No idea how I managed to beat it as a kid without the Internet desu. I guess we just tried harder then and had more time on our hands. I just got to On a Rail and feeling some frustration icl.

I grew up with all of it. I don't care what some unironic faggots on reddit think. The setting and atmosphere of HL2 is so garbage and lame compared to HL1, it's like the biggest possible downgrade. the physics were cool to mess around with at release in 2004, but nobody fucking cares now. the guns are laughably bad. the graphics did not age well at all, very uncanny valley and ugly as absolute fuck.

you're reddit

Not sure why they'd manually save when it autosaves constantly anyway.
I definitely got myself stuck in a couple tough spots thanks to autosaving at low hp, but then you just load the previous and its still only a couple minutes back at most.

Why do the guns in hl1 feel so bad? Is it because the game doesn't have physics? HL2 doesn't have this problem.

lol this is just incorrect. if anything gameplay have improved 10000x from 90s to early 2000s but graphics have declined.

explain how

it has nothing to do with physics. gun models themselves in most cases arent even affected by physics, what are you talking about?

it's a question of animations. they can make a game feel great or ass. same goes for sound effects

HL2 doesn't have this problem

LMAO time to put down the crack pipe anon

posting the only two weapons in HL2 that feel good

It's pretty agreed on that every other weapon in that game feels like dogshit, but the shotty and AR2 are okay. Even the shotty doesn't have the sound design that makes the HL1 one feel so meaty. The AR2 should have just completely replaced the SMG from HL2, and the other returning weapons like pistol, magnum, crossbow, rocket launcher all feel worse.

Play until pic related then it's all downhill from there.

HL1 doesn't have a setting or atmosphere. It's just office spaces and warehouses repeated over and over and over again with no real sense of place or progression. HL2 neatly follows a logical and connective path and makes sense, with way more variety.

I actually really like how the pistol feels in HL2.
feels great to magdump too

the physics are a cool gimmick, but that's about it. it doesn't impact gameplay on a fundamental level

You know less than nothing about game design and should never opine again.

*good games don't age

The revolver is just better in hl2 than it is in hl1. And whatever weapons feel good in hl2 is still more than what hl 1 has.

*plap plap plap plap plap*
*flops over in your hand like a pool noodle*
Absolute dogshit.
The magnum is great in HL1, it oneshots nearly anything with a headshot and you can actually carry enough ammo to use it for more than three seconds. The 9mm is strong enough that you can complete the game using nothing but it and the crowbar.

Good feeling weapons isn't just about how strong they are, i couldn't give two shits about it one shotting enemies or not. The revelover in hl 2 does that too, and feels better because it has way more kick, better sound, better animations.

Valve and gabe valued play autonomy and freedom in order for the player to feel immersed into the world
youtube.com/watch?v=MGpFEv1-mAo

bros what if HLX is a giant nothingburger…

the physics are a cool gimmick, but that's about it. it doesn't impact gameplay on a fundamental level,

Weapons like the crossbow compliment the games physics

Whole levels were designed with physics in mind

Crowbar breaking in hl2 had an expanded role because of physics

Enemies like the chopper and combine airships rely on physics to attack the player

You literally soar on a turbine power airboat across the map in the water missions going to black mesa east.

Retard.

No, it literally has the most awesome setting anybody could ever come up with:

it's May, 2000 in what's basically Los Alamos National Lab. you're a scientist there doing top secret work on teleportation. there's a major failure and aliens are now teleporting to inside the lab and killing everybody. everything gets shut down. the federal government sends elite soldiers in a black operation to kill everybody and get control of the situation. you have to fight your way out in a beginning-to-end insane quagmire you're directly in the middle of over a 24 hour period that nobody on the outside has any idea is happening right under them.

When zoomoids get a containment board

HL2 wasn't even a good game.

Did you get your opinions from a youtuber?

be esl scandi kid

just fucking click every single thing if stuck

It just works

I hate HL2, and I'm certain that HLX's pacing will be based on HL2, so I don't give a fuck

It sounds good in your head but that's literally the setting of doom. Half Life didn't have a real atmosphere or universe until HL2.

but doom didn't have the graphics and realism of HL1. when I played HL1 as a kid, I thought it was like a real place and I was watching a low-res POV camera or something.

i prefer the m16.

Yeah I like the way you worded this. HL was badass and the dread throughout the game was so heavy. I loved the idea of a gigantic underground secret high tech facility. The setting is amazing. I wish HL3 would largely be a "return to Black Mesa" game. I have no clue in what state the Black Mesa facility is currently after all these other HL games and episodes came out but is there a way they can do it? Return to Black Mesa which has been partially rebuilt or restored in secret?

the first time i played half life i didn't know the point was to lure the gargantua into another room down a dark hallway and electrocute it. i dumped my entire inventory of ammo into killing it instead. this didn't even seem wrong because you get a whole bunch more ammo back right away.

i didn't ever finish playing that save, and i did the exact same thing when black mesa was in open beta and unfinished. didn't even learn the intended path until the 25th anniversary.

does this make me retarded or do i get a pass for finding a different solution?

t. kleiner

you're retarded.

I played it in 2015 and still beat it, I don't think its a generational thing (though obviously theres still a noticable decline) but rather the average gamer being retarded, these were the people valve had in mind during hl2 playtests

i used to think this one sucked until i realized how tight the spread was and how fast it fired.
the mouse 1 mouse 2 combo is the best

Me and a friend were stuck on gargantua forever, he eventually looked up the answer. Half life completely ruined my standards for games

why is this exact post in every HL1 thread

some people are addicted to (You)s which i dont understand.

Headshot on helmet

Their helmets block bullets, same as Barney.

Actually, despite Half-Life Source being so broken that Valve delisted and disowned it, it has better AI than HL2. They're more proactive, more lethal and their navigation is much smarter. There's a mod that fixes up the bugs btw.

the fact that it takes place in the USA is another unique thing about it. doom takes place on mars or w/e so it doesn't feel real at all. it feels like sci-fi.

but Half Life felt like it could actually happen and that it was like a simulation of something happening right in our backyard.

they had some guys that worked on Duke Nukem.

it insists upon itself.

you're supposed to kill it? i just turned 360 degrees and ran away to the lobby

fpbp
You've unironically never played Pong. At most, you played a Flash remake of it in a web browser for 3 seconds.

I think it's that one autist that talks to himself and records himself playing games poorly

This movie is retroactively tainted by Megalopolis. It shouldn't be, I know the movies have nothing to do with each other, but I can't look at anything Coppola has done and not think about da club.

play this and deus ex (2000).

I played it for the first time a few years ago. It was good, really impressive compared to other fps of its time and still holds up. If you end up liking it definitely play opposing force, the storytelling isn't as good as the base game but I consider the gameplay much better, the weapon variety is better and you get a lot more time to play with the guns.

Half Life was never good. It is the genesis of the corridor shooter with big set pieces.

make sure to play it with mmod or brutal half life

i recommend half life simply because i'm enamored by the gold source aesthetic

The sopranos and goodfellas are better real greaseball shit kino

file.png - 640x359, 319.66K

funny you say that while posting that webm when the game doesn't give you the shotgun until halfway ravenholm.

to be fair you could kill the thing by dropping all of your explosives into it.

Games definitely age.

Correct

Nobody is clamoring for pong anymore.

That's a shitty example.
Pong is still fun to play if you got someone to play with

If you want an example of a game aged baldy, look no further to early 3D PS1 games.
Games like Armored Core was made before PS1 controllers had analog sticks, so it controls like shit because you're supposed to use trigger buttons to aim and the d-pad to move.
The PS1 AC games are so unplayable that people have made patches to have the games support analog sticks.

They do, just depends on the system and the time period

ps1 ac.jpg - 1000x411, 105.46K

because it's realism but in low-polygon models/low resolution textures so your imagination can fill in the gaps. it's the ideal combination.

not to defend black mesa but surface tension is a total slog in hl1 too

i'm blinded by nostalgia for my own youth when i say this, but graphics really didn't need to evolve past the PS2 era. the games only look like shit because they're standard definition. scale them up and they still shine. once we got to PS3 and games like mirror's edge and crysis were seen as cutting edge graphics it really felt like the wheel was finally in full motion in the never-ending race for the most superior grafisx down the endless highway we now call diminishing returns.

n3nI3pI.jpg - 435x502, 31.56K

i dont know if thats true
there is definitely lost art
like level design in modern day is truly abhorrent.
even hl2 shows the shift away from crawling around an abandoned facility towards individual high-production setpiece moments for people to clip and post to social media

BUGGED JUMPING MECHANIC

Video games don't age, ya DUMBY.

i said a similar thing earlier the lack of graphic fidelity is a feature, unironically. your imagination is infinitely superior to some video game designers creation. the lack of detail is the magic. this is why all modern games are soulless. the details are extremely clear, and it just becomes this uncanny valley, subpar execution of an attempt at mimicking real life. HL1 feels more real because my mind is basically pretending I'm watching an old digital video recording or something.

The magical magazine tube on the HL2 shotgun is pretty damn funny.

I was unironically scared of playing HL when it came out and I was a wee lad
The giant fish in the water was creepy

It's still pretty nerve-wracking!

This big guy scared me too

I actually couldn't finish it in 2002 or so.
I can't remember the stage, but my problem was literally I didn't know where to go or what to platform on. I think I got myself into a weird spot and then was convinced that because I could reach there it was part of the intended path.
When I replayed years later I never ran into that spot at all.

Watch the original HL2 trailer. 90% of the physics effects are completely absent from the release.

so? they paid the license for havok. wow, what a breakthrough.

Is doomer wojak that 22-25 year old older brother who's getting fucked over by life

same, how do these retards function irl

I think the only guns that really suck is the SMG, maybe the pistol depending on playstyle (I know some people who love it) and that's really it.
