Some VAs assume that because they voice a character they are that character, ignoring the team that designed it, the team that modeled or drew the sprites, the animators, the people who wrote their dialog, and everyone else.

Paimon VA's being an asshole has been known since 3.0 and she's gotten alot of complaints but Hoyo never ever took action until know. I think the problem was that even though she was a jerk, the fact that she went and voiced so many lines gave Hoyo the false idea that nobody could ever replace her. That caused her to get even more high on power by this weird alliance with SAG, but then I think Hoyo finally got a stranglehold on the EN VA situation thanks to Wriothesley's VA. Now, they are finally brave enough to cut the tumor that should have been cut a long time ago. My only hope is that next VA is more humble and less grating on the ears...

It also made a lot of people aware that union VAs shouldn't even be working on a non-union game like Genshin. The result is SAG and the involved VAs losing all their credibility in the public eye.

The entire "strike" was based upon SAG apparently discovering just how much money Mihoyo and only Mihoyo makes, and then telling the VAs "uhhh, don't work with them anymore, not until they sign this ridiculous contract. say it's a strike against AI or something".

Not really. Only for a very small minority of VAs. Unless you're a big name, there's no benefit to siding with the union.
85% of SAG VAs do NOT meet the minimum salary requirement to get healthcare ($20k/year).
Being on the union side works if you're a big name VA. Because it guarantees high pay from Disney/Pixar/Hollywood. You'd rather voice in those roles than in a gacha game, or any video game. It's why some big name VAs will likely be replaced in Genshin, for example, VAs for characters like Dainsleif and Zhongli.
For smaller VAs, where you'll NEVER get a big VA role, it's better to say fuck the union and continue working for Genshin. Because that way, you'll also work in other Hoyo games like ZZZ, HSR, and they'll put in a good word for you, and you'll get other roles in other gacha/video games, which are all non-union work.
tl;dr - Siding with the union is a good choice if you're a big name with big projects to fall back on. Not siding with the union is a good choice if you're a small name with small roles, and you'll get long time work + extra work with live service gacha games.

It's complicated. Basically the American VA union sagaftra wants hoyoverse, the company that makes Genshin, Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero to use only their union voice actors.
Gamedev like hoyoverse only do their own Chinese language in house and outsource localization to recording houses.
Sagaftra began a large multi business strike with their VAs claiming they were after AI protections for all VAs even non unionized ones.
Now most VAs on hoyoverse games are non union VAs. However sagaftra began requesting non union VAs boycott hoyoverse in solidarity with the union VAs boycotting the game.
A lot of non union VAs began withholding work from recording houses working with Hoyoverse and refused to record for months and months.
Things got interesting when Zenless Zone Zero's recording house fired at least two striking VAs. These VAs released a statement saying they did not know why they were fired and that they had missed work due to other engagements not the strike. But later on they admitted they were striking in solidarity with their union VA friends because of AI protections for VAs.
You'll hear that a lot about AI protections which is why this next part is interesting
With all the talk on Twitter going on, the non unionized recording house that hoyoverse outsources to work with English VAs on Zenless Zone Zero released a statement.
They said they have always provided air tight anti AI protections for everyone they work with and Hoyoverse as a whole also extends those protections for their other games and languages localizations.
Now all that talk about AI protections fell through. A lot of VAs tried to cover for themselves and sagaftra but eventually it became apparent that the reason sagaftra was targeting hoyoverse had nothing to do with AI.
