Crucible Kn***ht cosplay is pretty fun. You get access to three really good weapons and the Crucible incantations are decent. The fact the weapon arts and spells can be charged lets you stack damage boosts with the Godfrey talisman and others makes the build really great.

the running theory is that the golden age was rotten from the inside
godfrey offered himself as a sacrifice to make things right
and ranni took the blame to protect everyone else, since she was going to run away anyways
the real villain in the story is marika and the unstable pit of snakes she created as a result of being a really shitty mother who pit all her children against each other in a game of thrones

That's a point of contention in the lore. What we know:

The black knives are employed by Marika. The black knives helped Ranni in killing Godwyn. The black knives nowadays tries to kill Ranni. Marika wanted out of the Greater Will, but suffered from Godwyn's death greatly.

Some people say it's proof Ranni was working with Marika all along, but it's flimsy (to be honest, all the black knives Marika/Ranni lore is flimsy). Some say Ranni tricked the black knives into killing Godwyn, without Marika's knowledge. Some say the black knives did it themselves, when given the possibility.

I'd say the black knife Marika/Ranni stuff is one of the three, or four points of lore were everything could have gone, and we don't really know what happened, or why.

I guess it's possible Marika was in in it but I assume she is opposed to the fingers since the fingers are against the shattering, and Marika seemingly had been planning the shattering for a long time since she tells Godfrey that one day he and his warriors would return to take the ring, and she had Melina although it's bot known when she was born. I guess it's possible Marika only shattered the ring after Ranni offed herself and Miquella got kidnapped.

The only way we would know is to get a hold of the documents FromSoft have.

Godwyn was supposed to die a true death, the crone in the deepeoot depths says as much.
