The original plan for Persona 5 was a game where you travel the world, probably with a Japanese protag and an international cast of party members. I would some of the designs survived into the final version like Ann was probably designed originally as an American or British or at the very least just a white girl not from Japan, for example, but unlike the existence of this original version of P5, that aspect speculation on my part.
Then that earthquake happened in Japan with the tsunami and the nuclear plant getting destroyed, so Atlus decided to drop the international idea and make it Japan-centric because they were feeling national after the tragedy.
THEN the original version of Persona 5 that we got, which was far more similar, was also still very different. People datamined the shit about Hifumi originally being a party member, scenes of Joker talking to Sae in her apartment (they cut her romance and any regular S-link interactions and relegating her to the interrogation room scenes and stuff with just her and Makoto), and it's very clear that the story was originally more SMT-esque where all the demons and persona shit was going to be happening in REAL LIFE, given the opening section where you're just jumping around in real world casino having demon fights and then get arrested by actual cops at the end.
The anime scene ending also supports this (they made all those scenes well in advance) where the Phantom Thieves go off on summer vacation or whatever but are then pursued by actual government agents in real life, despite everything in the game being in a separate dimension.
The opening animation also only features Joker, Morgana, Ann, Ryuji, and Yusuke because they were the only ones they'd fully characterized at the time, whereas Futaba, Makoto, and Haru get a cameo appearance, and Haru looks more like a bratty slut sucking on a lolipop than anything that resembles her final characterization, for example.

You can buy some stuff that helps with I think, but I remember one of the work-out activities is Joker doing chin ups on the rafters so you surely don't need any gear for that, and of course you don't for the gym either. One of the new Caroline/Justine events they added to Royal is him lifting a barbell that each of them are hanging off of too. The reason you might have missed it is because the only thing it does for you is increase your max HP which makes it a waste of time relative to other stuff you could be doing.

But going to the gym or meditating at that temple only serve to increase your maximum HP/SP, and the initial gains are small so it's not even like it helps you out much.

I sympathize somewhat with awkward people, so as a guy I'd ask him what he wants to do and probably come up with some easy public or online meetup where I could get to know him more.
