If you mean Verso, he's one of the most realistically flawed protagonists ever written and he's amazing for it.

The endings suck. Verso's end is the only one that's presented as if it's some sort of positive, and it's the end that essentially shits on the entire quest you set out on at the start of the game. It's the same problem other jrpgs have where their stories just go on for too fucking long, but E33 is only 40-60 hours, and you can't even remember the point where it decided that this was no longer about humans fighting for freedom.

The entire plot is so contrived, too. Paintress had no better way of actually communicating to her creations what was going on? She changed her number right as the Gomage hit, making it seem as if she were the one doing it. It's a good thing she behaved in exactly the way she needed to in order to create a plot twist later in the game.

It has the thing I dislike about a few jrpgs. You have your quest marker moved in a moral sense about halfway through the game. They cite FFX as the inspiration here, but FFX doesn't fucking do that. The object remains the same in spite of the twists. "Stop Sin from killing people." It doesn't just go "WELL ACKSHUALLY THOSE PEOPLE HE WAS KILLING AREN'T EVEN REAL! FOOLED YA!" The entire fucking game is about Verso and his family lol, Verso is brilliantly written and it has nothing to do with small talk.
Monoco, Lune, Esquie, and Scielle are all also very real and have very real character arcs. I dont know if you were just half paying attention but the only character I can even be seen as arguably mid is Lune, whose background, personality, and overall story arc is somewhat generic. The rest are done brilliantly and it's a shame that Scielle doesn't get her own character quest to visit Pierre's grave site, which I can only guess was cut to not sway the player towards one of the two endings too much based on the dialogue during that.

Therefore japanese stories always have the "nakama group". This Nakama group usually consists of 5 character.

"the strong guy"

"the wise guy" (or old man)

"the heart" (or girl character)

Many many anime, manga, and japanese media in general depicts this basic formula. Think of One Piece, or YuGiOh, or My Hero Academia. Recently these stories started adding in a new character "the rival", which is the Vegeta or Sasuke antihero character.

JRPG's are basically tailor made for the nakama-group story.
The thing that REALLY annoys western audiences is when the main character is weak, or pathetic, or "wimpy", they love the strong muscular guy. This is a huge problem with a lot of japanese stories that are trying to appeal to virgin otaku, they have no western appeal whatseover. Long are the days past of DBZ and Fist of the North Star.
In E33 though, the main character is not depicted as a weak nerdy guy, but a strong manly dude surrounded by women. It checks both boxes, the strong man + the nakama group (which just so happens to be all women and inhumans). But you can see why this story wouldn't be so popular in Japan.
