Bottom looks better, yeah. There's gonna be multiple of those corridors and in a well designed game they are all gonna be worth my time, unlike the slop at the top, which is always, always, always not worth my time.

And one thing that image very wisely tries to hide is that in the bottom image, it takes you 7 minutes, not counting battles, to explore all of that area. On the top image? Two hours, bare minimum. The empty space and repetitive content adds up fast.

A lot of people don't think about it in RTS games, but in turn based strategies such as HoMM3 you really notice it because each of your heroes has a limited number of steps they can take.
It's the same for racing games. They're technically also just "corridor-based games", but on a micro level they're "open" and you're supposed to find optimal paths.
In RPG and adventure games, this just isn't necessary.

The problem is most game devs/level designers have no idea what they're doing and they completely fail to implement a good open world. So, ultimately the best open world games are ones where there are "corridors" guiding your progress, but the corridors kinda blend with the environment/world. So your journey is basically still guided and limited and you're effectively just playing a "corridor" game, except with less clarity of where to go and more pointless empty space.
I can't think of a single well designed truly open world game.

Mario always played it safe compared to Sonic. Boring but practical. Though i think the "New Super Mario Bros" series went a tad hard on this that I find the games bland to play.

Sunshine is still the last Mario game that felt different.

There have been design flaws where tools were just a one time gimmick, but using individual flaws to critic the old system is weak. The novelty of botw/totk's tools run out way before you finished all shrines.
They are more utilizable than magnetic boots or a hookshot, but because of their complexity the devs lost control of the users possible actions.

TOTK especially. Player freedom is great, but the game doesn't force and barely encourages you to even use most of it's mechanics.
It's great that you can stick hundreds of things to your bow, but few of them are useful and none even necessary.
It's a sandbox game where half of its fun are basically self set challenges, because instead of making a bridge you can just fly over the cliff and instead of building a mech you can just hit stuff with your sword.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released in 2017 and it was open world garbage. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released in 2023 and it was yet more open world garbage. We have now spent 12 years in the open world shit era of Zelda, and it is my belief that even if open world stops being a meme on the western side of gaming, Nintendo will be a full decade behind in catching up. That means that Zelda is bound to be shit for at LEAST another 15 years. What went so fucking wrong, guys?

the longer you play the worse the game gets because you will encounter less and less new things, it becomes more tedious to find shrines and korok without looking them up, you get stacked with weapons and items and only need a few fundamental things to beat every riddle, enemy and challenge.
You can enjoy the view in a hundred open world games and ironically TOTK barely offers anything in that regard over BOTW.

no that's just the resolution of the webm. if you run OoT at a higher resolution using something like ship of harkonen (native port of OoT to PC), you'll find that all of the modelling and texture work scale beautifully even to 4k. they really outdid themselves in the N64 era

The point made in that pic is correct, but calling BOTW-TOTK "13 years of Zelda" is stupid. There's a 6 year difference between the two games.

Egoraptor was headed in the right direction, but his annoyance with the combat seemed to be his primary point, and a weak one (I actually agree about the combat, but his point about it being objectively bad is silly) its also crazy he thought fi was worse than navi, its the same shit.
