in dishonored's case, I guess they wanted to emphasize the pacifist playthrough because they were afraid people were too stupid to recognize you could do that as an option. maybe some people are that stupid but you're insulting the intelligence of people who don't need yellow paint to give them directions in a video game.

so yeah, one good example of morality done right is MGS3 the sorrow. the game doesn't give a "chaos meter" or whatever the fuck, it just gives you options; be as murderous or as humanitarian as you'd like. then the sorrow fight happens and you get to see just how much blood is on your hands based on your own actions, with the game just giving you feedback when the time is right.

this is why this boss battle in particular is so lauded, and one reason why MGS3 will be remembered as one of the greatest games of all time. I don't think you can force people to feel something; it's better to allow players the freedom to do what they'd like without immediate judgement, then provide your interpretation of their personality or morality or whatever after the fact.

Technically according to the devs you are supposed to go to the first combat zone in the game and walker was supposed to turn around and leave at that point.

Your party member in an RPG getting assassinated by some NPC with a vendetta might work, as long as it's well written and not guaranteed to happen. That's just one extreme though, negative reactions could vary from simple avoidance to boycotts, ostracism, a mob shouting or throwing shit at your party etc. Some NPCs would like your atrocities depending on their loyalties and personality, some would forgive at least some of them, etc. And naturally your party members would have their own opinions.

I dont think we'll ever see a game where exterminating a populace will be seen as a positive thing by any neutrally written NPCs though, outside of grand strategy games I guess.

In Bioshock Andrew Ryan is a well-intentioned genius who failed due to the shortcomings inherent to his own ideology. The game actually tries to show how his brand of hypercapitalism fails in practice and isn't just resorting to ad hominem 'Republicans le bad' shit.

Meanwhile Veilguard has a character who identifies as "nonbinary" in a medieval fantasy setting where that kind of terminology makes no sense. The rest of the group accepts 'them' without question and at one point one of the party members gets bullied into doing pushups as punishment for getting 'their' pronouns wrong. There's also a scene where she epically btfo's some members of her own race who question her competence (implied to be because of her gender). The character in general is extremely idealized and was quite likely written as a self insert for one of the writers.
