Thoughts on seventh generation of video game consoles?
Thoughts on seventh generation of video game consoles?
as a zoomie, it brings good memories, I got to play on all of those at least once but we had a x360 at home so that one has a special place
I did misread this as "as a zombie"
The beginning of the end.
There is no difference.
They're a bit too old. I prefer retro consoles like the ps4 or xbox one.
The handheld was fun back in the day, and I applaud it for lasting as long versus smartphones, but they are all extremely limited compared to today, and not worth a buy anymore.
I was a teenager at the time so it was awesome, probably my favorite of all.
Is there a difference? Hahaha Boomer joke.
I'm a boomer and this is my favourite gen lol. I had every machine in the pic and played games on all of them. Totally lost interest in video games after that gen ended. I played 100s of games in that gen and played like maybe 20 or 30 games in the PS4 gen
waggle
pricing move so bad memes persist 20 years later
red rings
1 "analog stick" that killed the dream of a portable console game
actual good console
pretty good generation overall I really like bioshock
Greatest Generation.
PSP and DS aren't consoles, they're dedicated handhelds
he didn't do the dual analog stick mod to his psp
grim
DS is 6th gen thouhgbeit.
Handheld what? (Consoles.)
Simultaneously the last good generation (ps2/gc/xbox were the best generation) as well as the beginning of the end for gaming. At least for home consoles. Handhelds were still flourishing and the 3ds was the last good console to be made at all, not even slowing down until Nintendo killed it.
Handhelds are consoles.
No, it's not. The GBA is.
Objectively the best console gen because there were no true flops.
I was teen but also 20s so it was also awesome. The 360 came out when I was 15 and the PS4 came out when I was 23. So the 7th gen was my teens and early 20s.
I was at a bad time in my life, so was my younger brother (shitty parents, occasional homelessndss) but I always made it worth his while to get him vidya at the time as the only form of escapism. I would have liked to had paid attention to the cat and mouse game of PSP firmware, but the DS I had was great.
DS - kino
PSP - kino
X360 - never owned one
PS3 - alright
Wii - kino
By definition handhelds are not consoles. A gameboy is not a console, a DS is not a console, a PSP is not a console, a 3DS is not a console, a Steam Deck is not console (Its a linux pc in a handheld form factor). Switch as a hybrid IS a console as is the Switch 2.
dont be so pedantic. they were part of that gen. the psp came out the same year as the 360.
nope. PSP came out same year as the 360 and the DS and PSP were competitors and the DS only came out a year before the 360 and PSP. GBA was the 6th gen portable.
Actually true desu. I think its actually the only gen where literally everyone was succeeding roughly equally.
Wii
The worst "highly successful" console ever released. Owning one of these made you feel fucking scammed.
PS3
Some really great exclusives a few years into its lifespan, but it usually got inferior versions of multi-platform releases. Trying to run Bethesda games on this thing was a joke.
360
The obvious winner of this generation. Every genre aside from platformers and strategy games was an Xbox genre.
PSP
Great console, no games. Used exclusively by Japanese teen girls to play dating sims.
DS
Fine, but overrated. A lot of its best games were basically SNES games to go.
im 35
strategy games
I'm surprised they never tried to make a 360 version of civ 4 or 5. It would probably have done ok.
My brother stole my 360 a few years ago. Wish he hadn't as I could have hacked it now.
Will we ever see a true softmod this decade?
The last one that genuinely felt "next gen" graphically compared to the one before.
The first few years are underrated but by the end gaming was dead
Its always possible with the autists studying that shit. Ideally they would find a softmod for the series s/x instead as that would be perfect machine to play old games then as it would probably be able to have mods to run 360 games in higher frame rates and resolutions
What you erroneously refer to as 'consoles' are in fact just repackaged rebranded x86/ARM PC's
I can see your confused and think they're different things, and there is a difference. your PC (that marketing has labled a console) cant play as many games as a normal non-locked down PC despite having all the required hardware to do so.
But they remain just that. PC's. We're all PC gamers.
5th gen > 6th gen > 8th > 4th gen > 9th gen > 3rd gen > 2nd gen
overall great generation with very good libraries, some better some worse, gimmick on wii u was fun.
PSP and DS were amazing, portable device with graphics like that.
PS3 was where i played a lot of black ops online, good times.
7th goes in between 8th and 4th.
it was the last great gen of vidya even though it took a while to get things going. now we all have paid online and garbage.
I'm currently enjoying my PSPs, keep going back and forth between my 3000 and my Go. The 360 is one of the only non-retro consoles that I keep hooked up, and it's the last one that I am particularly fond of.
HALO 3 launch night was definitely something to be remembered. It was like a fucking party. The first guy that came out of the gamestop with the console bundle got a rapturous applause.
Really bloody awful.
-Waggle controls ruined 99% of the wii's library
-PS3 games all had screen tearing and frame rate issues
-360 had the RROD which took microsoft 3 years and about 5 motherboard revisions to fix
And gaming in general completely changed from being about interactivity to being about passively consuming a "story", and all fail states were removed so women could feel safe.
100% on point, all the post
The beginning of the end.
Were you asleep during the ps2 era?
When its library consisted of 90% licensed slop and Cinematic western games?
When journalists started shitting on games for being "gamey" and not having enough story?
When all the japanese studios closed?
When sega's dreamcast despite being amazing, failed because gamers thought the games were too hard and icky?
Paid online started in 7th gen.
yeah but it was free on the ps3.
Same thing
I was 17/18 when the gen started and it fucking sucked. None of the games I grew up playing got sequels for the new consoles and Nintendo became waggle shit. Imagine expecting a big-budget, console Dragon Quest or Kingdom Hearts only for them to be nowhere to be found and the entire Japanese industry shitting the bed, and the sequels that did get made ended up sucking (MGS3 vs. MGS4, FFX and XII vs. XIII, etc.) Gen 7 was terrible if you were used to the previous gens.
I loved the PSP (and Vita), fuck Sony for killing them
It was really a shit generation compared to SNES-PS2. Unfortunately gens got progressively shittier from there.
To further explain:
RE4 was better than RE5
Vice City and San Andreas were better than GTAIV
Shadow of the Colossus was great, and The Last Guardian was vaporware
Skyward Sword was abysmal despite Twilight Princess finally bringing back the tone all the fans wanted
DMC4 was a poor followup to DMC5
Metroid Prime 3 was way too linear, then they shit the bed completely with Other M
Kingdom Hearts II was god-tier, then they just straight up didn't make KH3
Silent Hill went to utter shit
The only way I can imagine liking gen 7 is if you had never played anything during gen 6 and had no expectations because of it.
Silent Hill was already shit right after SH2
0/10
1>3>4>2
The early 7th gen was kino IMO.
make a survival horror game focused on vibe
make it more action in 3 and kill the suspense vibe with combat
Sorry anon, it went to shit right after 2 because of this. Became a complete different game series with 3
