Thea's okay as a secondary flier but it's really only because her competition for that role is so bad. FE6 Shanna is such a fucking meme I seriously doubt anyone claiming she's good has actually played the game and isn't just stealing opinions they found on the internet. She literally doesn't do anything besides rescue drops and picking off soldiers before promo and her stats aren't good enough to be useful after the first route split. Her only true unique utility is using swords as a flier against fighters in the western isles if you early promo her for low hitrates as you tickle them for awful damage. You can pull off 90% of Shanna's utlity without having to give her a single level, but a lot of people get brainwashed into grinding her up because of the Sacae boogeyman.

also, the only reason I even brought up growths is because they're both level 1 and need training up to do anything in future chapters. your "muh 3 hp 1 str" suddenly becomes a far more significant 7hp/3 str over time and only gets worse as the game goes on. which is not even bringing up their def growths which only adds to the significant bulk difference and now you should be able to understand why no one uses Shanna to frontline in the midgame while they do with Lance. and that's before even getting into the actual maps they'd be deploying in like 12 with the archer hallways and 13 with ballistas.

Lance has horrible base luck to the point here he faces crit from early game mercs, bosses and any unit with at least 6 skill. Because of this, you can't use him safely in several spots where he should be useful, plus he also loses a lot of avoid over Thany.

b-but her lategame bulk

Thany is also not as frail as she seems later on, as shrugging off magic means that any formation with mages is safe for her and her avoid is so high due to her insane speed and high luck that she will rarely get hit at all, especially post promotion. In other words, she essentially has way more durability any time there's a mage in range (very common later in the game, from mages being added to stomp out charges to Siege tomes), and whenever she dodges an attack with her far superior avoid.

b-but her strenght

Just give her a Killer or Silver Lance for when she needs to hit hard. She has the speed to spare to use them.

B-but I'd still rather use other units later on

You can still do that and take advantage of her earlygame dominance, since you get more whips than you need. There's no reason why you can't have her rotate on and off in maps where her flight is more or less relevant.

I keep bringing up the bulk and the strength because hers is so shit that it really does put a hamper on her ability to do combat. she literally doesn't get one rounds reliably with a silver lance even despite doubling and pretty much never tanks any combination of mage + physical hit. Lance's bulk is literally better than hers in mixed magic + physical formations even despite the res difference because of his higher defense and far higher HP. did you even try to do the math on that one?
