I'm not claiming the PS6 is going to be some magic device, but it's obviously going to raise the floor. It's going to be like going from a 2070 to a 4070 (that will have upscaling for devs to fall back on), it's going to give devs a lot more room to work with so they can optimize even less.

Imagine how much worse games are going to run when they can target that 4070 instead of a 2070 and they have access to upscaling on the next gen consoles. People are acting like DLSS is a massive boon for the Switch 2, but when upscaling becomes the standard next gen then the games will be made with upscaling to even run on the better hardware(like with Monster Hunter Wilds). It makes the DLSS on the Switch 2 irrelevant, if the PS6 is a 4070 then the Switch 2 would be a laptop 3050 Ti trying to use DLSS to make games run.

That being said, a game like MHWilds is CPU bound and leaks are saying that the PS6 will use a X3D v cache so that might actually be a massive performance difference(and have a massive impact on pc gaming for those without X3D CPUs). I can already see a return to the PS3 days with fanboys jerking off over the magic CPU.

Not really though. The PS5 Pro is more like a 4060 Ti in practice — better clocks, improved upscaling, but nowhere near a real 4070. It's good enough to brute force higher frame rates at 1440p or make 4K DLSS targets viable, but calling it "close" to a 4070 is generous at best. The jump to PS6 would still be significant, especially with newer CPU and cache tech.

the ps4 cpu was REALLY shit. until all the open world games, you could do that but all those need a lot of cpu calculations. the days of having a weak cpu and strong gpu are dying, even with a 5090 you need a 9800x3d for better performance on a lot of games, you can't use a 5700x3d and expect good performance on the latest open world slop.

keep in mind that geekbench 6 is pretty skewed in favor of memory bandwidth. Open world games are very CPU intensive and that's what most AAA studios are pushing out now, so that's how you end up with DD2, MonHun Wilds, Stalker 2, and the Oblivion Remake performing so terribly. The Switch 1 has a downclocked stock Tegra X1 and lasted 8+ years as a market leader.

The Switch will be more than fine with the T239, which was designed specifically for the Switch 2.

What this tells me is that the mid-gen refresh will be awesome. This 8NM die will do wonders on 5NM, probably doubling battery life for free.

I'll buy it at launch and then the OLED model later in 2028.

Of course we always did multi-layers ,but the number of passes was more or less the same because we could just improve the projection technology and get shit smaller in the die, and we did that more or less in the moore's law pace.
Now that's over, we can't go smaller.
All we can do is increase the number of layers, and that increase price. it just takes more robot time to complete a chip, and they're more prone to failure.
The future will be chiplets and stacked stuff and probably lower clock speeds, but we're not on the future yet.
