A bit of both. The RNG that it bit your head off is unlucky, but it's a grizzly bear when you faught 1v1 with no cover or defenses.
big revolvers/handguns are for bear defense, eg you're not looking for a bear but you might run into one.
if you're hunting bears you'd want to use a rifle.
shotgun with slugs would be ok. i have no idea how buckshot would do against a bear, i'd be concerned about a lack of penetration

When things go pretty bad he doesn't mind changing difficulty to recover, the only way for the colony to fail is if a raid/event wipes him in one go and even then he could reset the day if he feels like it would be better for the streams

Most people don't survive bear attacks. In Rimworld, luck is usually on your side because animals won't finish killing you when you're downed (unless you were being hunted). People get too comfortable relying on RNG because of that

I don't think good healthcare would help in any way, a coworker ate raw meat he bought from an illegal butcher, got brain worms and they gave him six months left to live, he died in one. I need another expansion. Hoping for more things to do with visitors and guests. Taverns, libraries, etc. I stopped playing Dwarf Fortress right around when this were introduced, but it sounded like a great idea. Expand upon pilgrims, too. Hard to go wrong. Lots of storytelling possibilities, easy to mod more.

Rimworld is a game and has it's caveats, but even IRL animals are strong and fighting an angry bear speeding towards you even with a gun is a bad idea.

Depends on the bow, but they can potentially do more damage than a handgun and are considered valid and useful hunting weapons even to this day. Also aim matters.

Water skip, rubble wall, teleport, mass teleport, all berserks, stun, boulders skip, nausea attack, invis, painblock, focus are all great
There are less useful ones ofc but overall it's a great system which allows you to completely stop a siege with just 2 powerful casters
only a couple psy powers below level 5-6 are worth more than nothing at all, but those few are OP as fuck. reliably getting to 5-6 is only worth it for tribals.
