My guess is the writer thought it would be kino babino if you defeat the Paintress and then "oh noes, everyone dies!" as some kind of epic tweest, and awkwardly forced the rest of the story to allow for that moment.

When you think about it, the premise for Clair Obscur is pretty bog standard. A world that looks like a funhouse version of Paris with a magical Paintress who has the power to literally erase people with artful brushstrokes? I'd be shocked if everyone's first thought isn't that the world is artificial somehow. I think that's why the intro subtly encourages the player to believe that the Fracture is what's responsible for everything being all magical and painterly, even though that's actually always been the case. Once you get past that, though, and with all the heavy-handed foreshadowing surrounding Maelle, the "twist" becomes almost painfully obvious...or it WOULD be, except for the fact that Maelle is the Paintress' daughter rather than the Paintress herself.

With all that in mind, I think the plot would be dramatically improved if Maelle/Alicia's identity reveal happened sooner. More precisely, I think Act III should've been greatly expanded, delving more into her being torn between following after her mother or father. I was also shocked at how little the rest of the Canvas seemed to be a topic of exploration by the end, and everything just devolved into family drama. It's basically the opposite of the usual JRPG plot progression. Granted, exploring the question of what makes someone "real" or "fake" has been done to death, so I can understand them not wanting to touch it, but then they're the ones who decided to make everything fake in the first place.

It definitely feels like more RPG fans playing this than action fans. For reference I struggled pretty hard with Elden Ring for example, but this wasn't bad at all. The only boss that took more than two tries was Monolith Renoir because I kept fucking up the timing for his vanishing move.

I suck at parrying (and am too prideful to dodge so I ended up taking lots of hits) and I still got through the game fine because it has so many ways to build your characters to deal with that. It's like people complaining about the ticking clock in Majora's Mask, if you weren't such a fucking crybaby you would realise it's really not that hard to deal with at all.
